Everything had lined up so well, it was almost too good to be true.
"I have a surprise for you," he said, his arms still around me as I looked around the room that had been my first adult home. As eager as I was to move on, I needed a moment to say goodbye.
"What?" I turned in his arms, wrapping my hands around his shoulders.
"I hired a part-timer for the shop. He wants to work three to four days a week. He's also part-time at the fire department. It'll be perfect. I'll be home more and can be there most nights when you get in from the office."
He couldn't have given me better news if he'd had a genie. "I love it. I'm so happy I'll have you around so much."
"We'd better go, or we'll be late for our own party." We finished in the apartment, joining my sister at the car. She was following us in my car while we drove the truck. I could go back and get my car another weekend and visit her.
I'd signed my part of the apartment over to her so she would have a place to call her own.
As we pulled into Three Lakes, Ian turned off into the gas station parking lot. "I was worried we wouldn't make it. I'm going to fill up now so we don't have to worry about it after the party."
As he pumped the gas, I heard a bit of a commotion outside the car. I cracked the window and tried to look surreptitiously at the arguing couple.
"I can't believe you, John! How could you do this to me?" A slender man with shaggy blond hair slammed the door on an old El Camino. I couldn't see the man inside, but I sure could hear him.
"You'll do what I want, Corey, or you can stay your slutty ass here in this one-horse fucking town."
The blond, Corey, slapped the window. "You won't leave me here. How could you not tell me? I told you how I felt about it."
Ian got back in the truck with his eyebrows up. "Wow. Should I go check on them?"
"Maybe," I said as I tried to hear what they said. "Just ask if they’re okay. What if the smaller man needs help?"
Ian nodded and stepped out of the truck. I watched him walk casually over to the beat-up car. I couldn’t hear his words, but the blond shook his head repeatedly and smiled. They exchanged a few words, then Ian walked back to the truck.
"He said he’s okay." Ian shrugged. "I offered him a ride or to call someone, but he wouldn’t let me."
"You can’t help someone that doesn’t want help," I said, pointing toward his shop. "Let's go to the party."
