“You muthafucka!” he yelled angrily. “I’ma tell ’em it was all on you.”
“Don’t waste your breath. I’ve got all my bases covered, and if you try to do that, your ten years will be short. Real short. I’m sorry to have to do this to you, Wolf, but it was me or you, and I always come first. Every war has casualties. Keep ya head up. If you still feel raw about it in ten years, come get at me. But for now, don’t drop the soap unless you really want to, cowboy,” I taunted him. I turned around. Then I looked back, throwing up my index and middle fingers. “Deuces!” I laughed and walked off.
“You son of a bitch. I’m gonna get you and that bitch Adrienne. You wait. Wait, you dirty bastard. You wait,” he said as the COs carted him off.
“Should I worry about him?” Big Cal asked me.
I fanned it off. “Maybe in ten years.” I laughed as I signed my release papers.
“You’re a free man, Pooch, but you’ll be back,” the officer said snidely as I threw the pen down.
“You might be right, Officer.” I pointed at him as Big Cal and I left.
We got in his SUV, and he began to drive.
“So what’s the plan?” I asked.
“Let me worry about the plan. When we get where we’re going, you’ll have your fun. We both will,” he assured me.
“So where’s my heat?”
He pulled the lid on glove box down. “In there.”
“Where’s your heat?”
He pointed to his armrest. “In there.”
I opened the armrest and took out his two guns. “Thanks, man.”
“I thought I told you that your heat was in the glove box.”
“Do I look like Boo Boo the fool? I trust your ass about as far as I can throw you. Agreement or no agreement, you had a part in gettin’ my black ass locked up, and you’re still a pig. Fuck what you sayin’. We doin’ this nigga in, and after that, we partin’ ways. All I’m gonna say to you is don’t come around me no more after this. The only reason I ain’t puttin’ one between your eyes right now is that you sprung me, and I’d like nothing better than to put that fire in Terrence’s dome. After this, I have no problem puttin’ fire in your dome. However, we can call it square if you stay the fuck away from me and my new organization.”
“You’re talkin’ real reckless for a nigga who can go right back to prison at the snap of my fingers.”
“Send me back. I’m loaded with way too much information to stay, Officer.”
“So you’re a snitch now?”
“Snitchin’ on cops ain’t never fucked up nobody’s street cred.”
He relented, realizing I was right. “Fine. Take the heat, and after this, me and you—we’re done. Just leave my name outta your mouth.”
“My sentiments exactly,” I agreed. “How long is this drive?”
“Sit back and take a nap. I’ll wake you when we get there.”
“Bitch, please. And end up in the river? Bullshit. I’ll sit back, but my eyes ain’t closing until I’m away from your ass.”
“Same ol’ Pooch.” He shook his head.
“And I ain’t never gonna change. Remember that shit.”
I didn’t know what happened next, but apparently, my dumb ass did doze off. It was from all those nights I had stayed up watching my mouth and ass from Wolf. I was tired as hell, and riding and rocking in that big SUV put me to sleep like a baby. It was the first time since I could remember that I rested. Damn. Being free felt good.
“We’re here,” he said as we pulled up to some storage place.
“Glad I didn’t wake up in a river,” I said, looking down to make sure I was still gripping the same heat.
“I told you that you could trust me. Settling this shit comes first to me. Me and you are in the past, and I don’t give a fuck what you do after this,” he said as we drove around the different storage units.
“So, what did that nigga Terrence do to you?”
“He crossed the line.”
I chuckled. “I can understand that completely.”
“I know. You’re the only nigga who can, since he stole your girl and your money.”
I gripped the heat tighter. “Thank you for reminding me.”
“You’re welcome,” he said, parking and getting the heat out of the glove box. “Now come on.”
We got out, and Big Cal unlocked one of the storage units. When we walked in, I saw that it had been soundproofed. Trinity was tied to a chair, with a bag over her head and a bandana tied around her mouth. Bitch. Her muffled screams ignited my fury.
Big Cal looked at me and put his index finger up to his lips. Shit. No problem. I could be quiet. I wanted to surprise this bitch more than he did. He walked up to her. “I’m gonna untie this. If you scream, I’m gonna punch you in the face. Are we clear?”
She nodded slowly. He lifted the bag and undid the bandana. When her eyes adjusted to the light, she gasped loudly and started scooting the entire chair backward at the sight of me.
“Surprised to see me, baby? Did you miss your man?”
“P-Pooch,” she stuttered. “How did you—” She looked at Big Cal. “Big Cal, please. He’s gonna kill me. You can’t let this happen to me. Please,” she cried.
“Now, why would I do that?” I asked, getting in her face as she began to cry hysterically. “Perhaps because you lied to me about loving me? Maybe it was because you ran off and married your Dreads? Or maybe it’s because my son—you know, the one you were pregnant with—was really Dreads’s?
She cried out, “Big Cal, please! Pooch, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry—”
“Bitch, you ain’t sorry,” I yelled and backhanded her across the face. “You left me in that fucking hellhole to die so you could run off and be Mrs. Dreads. Lied to me about my son and got my fucking daughter being raised by Terrence. Fuck you. As much shit as I did for you? Fuck you, Trinity.”
Lifting her eyes to Big Cal, she pleaded with him between cries. “Big Cal, why? Why are you doing this to me? What about my kids? What about me?” she pleaded, her face covered with tears and sweat.
“What about you, Trinity? What about me?” he asked, swallowing back emotion. “I was there for you. I had your back, and I looked out for you. Me! What about me?”
I looked at him strangely. I was totally confused. “What the fuck are you talking about?”
He started pacing and hitting himself in the head with the gun. “It was always me. Always in the background. Protecting you, guiding you, talking to you, being there for you. From this nigga here to Terrence. It was me. The friend. Nobody cared about my feelings. Nobody saw my pain. It was always about Pooch and Dreads.”
“Nigga, what’s wrong with you?” I asked, looking at him like he was stupid. “What? Are you in love with this bitch or something?”
“Shut up,” he yelled.
“Big Cal, I didn’t know. Honest, I swear to God. I didn’t,” Trinity cried.
“Bullshit! Couldn’t you see the way I looked at you? Didn’t I show you with how I talked to you and was there for you? There wasn’t nothing I wouldn’t do for you. Nothing!”
Muthafucka. He was in love with Trinity. No wonder he had a beef wit’ Terrence. This nigga had to have had a beef wit’ me too. This nigga was setting all of us up. I pointed a gun at him.
“Nigga, you better not even think about doing shit to me,” I yelled at him.
“Trinity!” I heard a nigga yell from behind us.
Terrence!
We all gripped our heat and stood in a triangle, each with a gun pointed at two separate people.
“It’s a muthafucking reunion. Now it’s a party,” I muttered.
“Trinity, baby, are you okay? Did they do anything to you?” Terrence asked, keeping his guns and eyes focused on me and Big Cal.
“No, baby. Just leave. I’ll try to get out of this on my own. Please,” Trinity cried.
“Even now, you choose him,” Big Cal yelled. “Will you still love him when his brains are scattered
at your feet?”
“What do you mean, choose him?” Trinity asked, confusion etched on her face. “He’s my husband, Big Cal.”
“Even after he shot me, I called you to check on you, and you wouldn’t even talk to me, because Dreads said so. You damn everybody for your fucking Dreads,” Big Cal shouted.
“So, it’s like this, cuz? You wanna take me out over my wife?” Terrence asked him. “And you’d bring Pooch back to do it?”
“Cuz? This nigga is your cousin?” I asked, in shock.
“We were cousins until he shot me over her ass,” Big Cal yelled.
“And you ain’t got a gun pointed at me over her ass now?” Terrence bellowed. “Come on, Aaron. Think. Pooch don’t give a fuck about none of us. He’ll just as soon put a bullet in all our heads.”
“We have an agreement. That won’t happen,” Big Cal yelled.
“You think this grimy nigga is gonna honor an agreement, knowing you were responsible for locking him up? Don’t let this shit gas you up, dawg,” Terrence shouted.
I gripped my heat a little tighter. “Nigga, I’m a man of my word.”
“Baby, please,” Trinity cried. “Dreads, just leave. Please, y’all, let him leave.”
“At least I finally know where your heart lies,” I said to Trinity. “You good-for-nothing bitch,” I yelled. I noticed Terrence’s finger tense on the trigger. “No, sir,” I said to him, shifting my aim from Big Cal to Trinity. “Romeo and Juliet will die together this day if you think of pulling that trigger.”
Ignoring me, Terrence focused on Big Cal. “She’s my wife, Aaron. Come on,” Terrence pleaded.
I shifted my aim from Trinity back to Big Cal, unsure of his motives.
“But I love her,” Big Cal screamed. “How come you couldn’t love me back? After everything.”
Amazed, I almost admired that bitch for her ability to command every nigga in this storage unit. That Oshun energy she had over men was otherworldly. “Damn, your pussy power is the bomb, girl. You’ve got muthafuckas who ain’t even hit it ready to kill for it.”
Big Cal laughed. “Don’t you remember, Trinity?”
“Remember what?” she screamed. “Please stop this, Cal.”
Big Cal eyed her with pain in his eyes. I knew then that he was about to reveal some shit that was about to tilt the axis in this storage room. “Back when Terrence was locked up and you got wit’ Pooch. He was drunk, and he made you get on the pole in front of him and his boys at the house, in the king suite. Afterward, you ran to your bedroom, crying. You had been drinking heavily, and I came to check on you . . .”
Terrence and I both looked at Trinity. “Bitch, I know you didn’t,” I boomed. “In my muthafucking house?”
She gasped as the memory came back to her. “Oh my God. You said that I didn’t . . . that we didn’t . . .” She could barely get the words out.
Terrence swallowed hard. “You fucked my wife, Aaron?”
“Yes! And it was the best fucking sex of my life. I told her I loved her and everything,” Big Cal screamed. “You don’t remember? The next day I told you that we didn’t, so you wouldn’t feel bad and tell Pooch. I didn’t think you would honestly not remember. How could you not remember? The next month you were pregnant with Princess,” he cried, becoming unhinged. “I played the back to keep you safe. When you finally got away from Pooch and got with my cousin, I was willing to put my feelings aside, but you were smiling at me, confiding in me, and getting close to me. I knew it was a sign. I was just waiting on the signal. I thought you were finally gonna let me be with you. I thought you were finally choosing me. So me, you, and my baby, Princess, could be together.”
“You bitch. So Princess ain’t mine, either?” I thundered.
“Don’t you fucking pull that trigger, muthafucka,” Terrence yelled, noticing my trigger finger twitching after I heard the news Big Cal had spit.
“I remember now, but I was so fucked up then, I didn’t remember that, Big Cal. Besides, back then, you told me nothing happened, and I believed you. So I pushed it out of my mind because there was nothing to remember. I never had feelings for you. You were my friend. That’s it. And no, Princess isn’t your daughter. I was already pregnant. That next month, when I found I was pregnant, I was already eight weeks along.”
“Liar!” Big Cal screamed.
“It’s the truth,” she cried, eyeing me. “Pooch, remember when Princess got sick when she was an infant, and they thought she was gonna need a blood transfusion? They checked your blood. You were a perfect match. You’re her father.”
I calmed down as the memory came back to me. “She’s right, Big Cal. I was a match. Princess is mine.”
Big Cal let out an agonizing scream. “All this time, I thought that possibly she was mine. To have a baby by the woman of my dreams,” he cried.
“You slept with him?” Terrence said, heartbroken.
“Baby, I don’t remember it. He said nothing happened. I was drunk,” Trinity pleaded. “I love you. You’re my husband. Please forgive me. Even if I did, I didn’t know he was your cousin back then. I’m not sure if he’s lying or not now.”
Big Cal shot a glare at her. His eyes danced with anger. “Lying? I should—”
He moved to attack her, but I trained my gun straight at his head. “I should kill all you sons of bitches. Ain’t no fucking loyalty in friends, families, or foes.” With my other gun pointed at Trinity, I sneered, “And your slut ass has been through all of us.”
“Fuck you, Pooch!” she screamed.
“Fuck you, Trinity!” I yelled.
“Baby?” she pleaded to Terrence. “Dreads, please. I’m so sorry.”
“You muthafuckas make me sick,” Terrence seethed. “Talkin’ about how Trinity wronged you. She was my lady since high school. Not y’all’s. Mine! I lost her to you, and you’re my fam, supposed to be takin’ this nigga down, and you fallin’ in love with my lady and fucking her while she’s drunk. You bitch-made niggas disgust me.”
“You fucking bitch!” Big Cal belted at Terrence.
“Please, y’all. Please let Dreads go,” Trinity begged. “Pooch, you can kill me. Cal, do what you want to me, please. Just let Terrence go,” she cried.
Damn. This bitch really rode hard for Terrence. She had proven that she was really a loyal, down-ass bitch for that muthafucka. She was willing to lay down her life for him. It was the first time that I had ever seen anybody who was willing to do that. Hell, I couldn’t even say that I was willing to do that for anybody. This bitch truly loved fuckin’ Terrence.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Trinity wiggling her hands out of the ropes. “This bitch is gettin’ loose,” I yelled, getting ready to point the gun at her, but I heard a gun click.
“Run, Trinity,” Terrence said.
The only thing I heard after that was a hail of gunfire.
Chapter 22
Trinity
“Nooo!” I screamed as I dove out of the chair and hit the floor. The sound in the room was deafening as gunfire rang out. Then silence. After a few minutes, I realized that I was safe and that I hadn’t been hit. Grateful that I’d survived the massacre, I jumped up. I had to get to Terrence. I ran straight for my baby.
“Terrence!” I yelled, running to where he lay on the floor. I got on my knees and held his head in my lap. “Baby, please wake up! Terrence, please. Please wake up. Baby, I need you. I love you. Please, wake up,” I cried hysterically as I rubbed his forehead.
I saw the blood smears that my hand left on his face. My entire body started to tremble as I lifted my hand. Blood oozed down my forearm and hand. My hand shook ferociously as I screamed and screamed.
