I eased the Fiat out onto Birch Street, then slowly turned so I was heading toward Route 66. From there, I could get on I-40 and…what? Where was I even going?
There were three directions I could go, since due north was sort of out of the question, thanks to the Grand Canyon being in the way. Besides, Randall Lenz was in Kanab, a hundred miles north of where I stood, and I didn’t want to go anywhere near there.
All right…west, south, or east. West sounded alluring — I’d always wanted to visit California — but I wouldn’t be able to get too far before I reached the Pacific Ocean and didn’t have anywhere else to run. South, and I’d hit the Mexico border before too soon. I didn’t have a passport, so that didn’t sound like a very good idea.
East…well, if I headed east, I’d have most of the United States to lose myself in. Even Randall Lenz might have a hard time finding me in that vast amount of space.
There was my answer. East, toward the rising sun.
There hadn’t been paper or a pen in my borrowed room, which I supposed was a good thing. As much as I’d wanted to leave Jake a note, I was worried that anything I wrote might give too much away. And maybe…just maybe…if I made him angry enough, he wouldn’t try to look for me.
I got onto the freeway, following the signs directing me toward Albuquerque. At least, I was pretty sure that was what they said. My vision was blurred with tears, and at last I let myself sob for everything and everyone I was leaving behind.
I’m sorry, Jake.
I love you…and I’ll never forget you.
