The daemon Lord Akaru has won many wars and made many sacrifices. Now as he enjoys the hard won peace, he wonders if Pulchra, a girl from the nearby human town, could fill the emptiness in his heart. And if she can, can she also survive living in an unfamiliar world populated by daemons?Daemons have lived apart from humans for centuries. Their pastoral pursuits as well as their harsh wars have rarely been observed. All that may change when the daemon Lord Akaru, having lost his first wife in a war with his rivals, is struck by the beauty of the young daughter of a human magistrate. Her name is Pulchra and she is soon swept into the confusing world of the daemons where she finds savagery, beauty, inequality, and possibly true love. But can such a pairing last and can Pulchra survive through turmoil and starvation to gain a happy home with her new husband?
