Daughter of Fortune

Maria Espinosa is “La Afortunata.” First she survives the 1679 cholera epidemic in Mexico City, then an Apache raid on the caravan transporting her to Santa Fe. Rejected by her sister, Maria goes to live with a ranching family living uneasily among the Pueblos and inspires a rivalry between Diego and his half-Indian brother Cristobal.
