Life is lonely for Jessie Stokes. She has recently lost her husband. He was the love of her life, her best friend, and the father of the child she recently learned she is carrying.
Jessie doesn’t know what to do. There aren’t many young men in the small Missouri town where she lives that would ask for her hand in marriage, but she doesn’t want to raise this child alone. She knows she needs to find a husband, and soon.
In response to an ad in the paper, Jessie moves clear across the country to California State, looking for love. What she finds is a different story, as the man she marries is looking for a maid, not a bride.
