Judith Merril (1923-1997) was not only an important early science fiction author of novels and short stories but a political activist and a member of the influential 1940s sci-fi group known as the Futurians (members included her husband Frederik Pohl, James Blish, Damon Knight, David A. Wollheim, C. M. Kornbluth, et al.).As the title implies, "Daughters of Earth and Other Stories," published in 1985, is a collection of stories that feature strong female characters that challenge the traditional roles women were often relegated to in the science fiction of the 1950s. The original "Daughters of Earth" (minus the Other Stories) is the title of a 1968 collection of three of Merril's novellas: "Daughters of Earth" (1952), "Project Nursemaid" (1955) and "Homecalling" (1956). Interestingly, when McClelland and Stewart published "Daughters of Earth and Other Stories" in 1985, one of the original novellas, "Project Nursemaid," was omitted.ContentsAuthor's Notes: Note #1 • essay by Judith MerrilAuthor's Notes: Note #2 • poem by Judith MerrilWish Upon a Star • (1958) • short story by Judith MerrilDaughters of Earth • (1952) • novella by Judith MerrilThe Lonely • (1963) • short story by Judith MerrilThe Shrine of Temptation • (1962) • short story by Judith MerrilWhoever You Are • (1952) • novelette by Judith MerrilPeeping Tom • (1954) • novelette by Judith MerrilIn the Land of Unblind • (1974) • short story by Judith MerrilHomecalling • (1956) • novella by Judith MerrilThe Future of Happiness • (1979) • short fiction by Judith MerrilThat Only a Mother • (1948) • short story by Judith MerrilDead Center • (1954) • novelette by Judith Merril
