He’d invited Samaar to be his guest. She declined. After she’d lost the home she’d made with Lorena, he’d hoped she and Alice might stay on with him in Anacortes, or they could go back to his home in a remote area in British Columbia. Or he would buy a tiny island for her in the South Pacific. There was no longer any doubt in his mind, he was in love with her, and she knew it.

She looked at him and whispered: “When I love, the people around me die.”

  Damascus, Syria

  Three months later

NO ONE KNOWS how it happened. Only that it did.

There’s a rumor going around about a woman dressed in a burqa striding around the palace grounds late at night. She was assumed to be part of the royal household and carried herself with dignity and purpose. She spoke angrily in Arabic to a member of the Royal Security force complaining that her Majesty was worried about the safety of her children. She had the necessary identification, dismissed him and moved freely with intent.

The official version left no room for speculation. The Royal Palace announced, “His HRH has died in his sleep. He was suffering for some time from heart issues. He will be mourned by his family and loyal subjects. The Royal family asks that you respect their privacy at this time.”

Twenty-four hours later Her Majesty and her children boarded a private jet. They arrived in Britain where they hold dual citizenship and were immediately taken to an undisclosed location.
