“Exactly,” Megan said, turning to grin at her. “It’s the only place where I ever thought I could win. And I thought it was the thing—I mean, it definitely was the thing that gave me the confidence to finally break up with my ex, because that needed to happen. But I didn’t really break up with her because I was confident. It’s, um, a long story.”

“I know what you mean,” Gianna said. Of course, she was the only one in the car who knew that Cari had been abusive, and Megan wanted to keep it that way. She wasn’t sure if she felt embarrassed about it anymore—she knew it wasn’t really her fault—but that didn’t mean she wanted to drag out her history in front of everyone, either.

“I had to think about it yesterday, because I felt so good even though we lost.”

“You guys played your hearts out,” Faith said. “It was amazing. You should absolutely be proud of how well you did.”

“And I am,” Megan told her. “I’m proud and I’m thrilled and I’m grateful to you and Kendall and the rest of the team. And especially you, Gianna, because you made me think about things. You made me think about myself.”

“And you’re feeling good about yourself?” Gianna asked, her voice lower.

Megan nodded. “I guess I always thought that if I didn’t win, there wasn’t any point. Why should I try? I never could win with my sister, I never could win with my ex, I never could win with work. But—it sounds like a stupid moral to an after-school special, but it’s true. I don’t have to win, as long as I know I did my best. I did what’s right for me.”

She put her hand on Gianna’s where it lay between them on the seat. Gianna’s eyes widened, and she turned her hand slowly over so their palms were facing. She squeezed.

“So,” she said, her voice even quieter than before, “you’re ready to talk?”

  Megan nodded. “I think so.”

Gianna got out of the car when Faith pulled up at Megan’s apartment, and they both got their bags out of the trunk. “I’m staying here,” she told Faith through the window of the car.

Faith raised her eyebrows. “You sure about that?”

“Absolutely,” Megan said. Gianna turned slowly to stare at her.

Faith grinned and made an obscene gesture. “Time to celebrate, huh? Have fun, girls.” With no more discussion, she drove off, leaving Megan and Gianna on the sidewalk.

“Have I finally succeeded in ridding you of embarrassment?” Gianna asked as she followed Megan up the stairs.

“Don’t give yourself too much credit,” Megan teased. “You helped me figure out my confidence and doormat issues, but not that one.”

“Yeah?” Gianna leaned against the wall as Megan unlocked her apartment door. “So what made you less embarrassed?”

“I decided it was stupid.” Megan stepped into the apartment and held the door open for Gianna. “I was really just making excuses.” She dropped her bag and turned to lock the door behind them, giving Gianna a moment to put down her own bag.

“You’re done with excuses?” Gianna said softly. Megan heard the quiet thump and turned.

“Yeah,” she said, and she took Gianna’s face in both hands, and she kissed her.

Gianna made a soft noise against her mouth that just made Megan want to kiss her harder, and longer; she backed her up against the couch, their bodies pressing together, and Gianna’s arms came around her waist and held her tight.

When they had to break away for a moment for air, Megan let her hands slide down from Gianna’s face to her shoulders, and Gianna looked up with a wicked grin.

“I thought you wanted to talk,” she said.

“I did. I do. But I had to do that first, so you’d know I was serious.”

Gianna’s smile faded and she shook her head. “But I don’t know that you’re serious. We do this all the time, Megan. I’m still willing to wait for you, but not if you’re going to toy with me.”

“All right.” Megan took a deep breath and looked into Gianna’s eyes. “I’m not going to toy with you and I’m not going to make you wait.”

“Make that a little clearer for me, babe,” Gianna said, her gaze steady.

“I want you to be mine, Gianna. I want you to be my girlfriend. I love you.”

Gianna gave a little gasp. Megan felt it all through her body. “You mean it?” she whispered.

Megan nodded. Her heart was beating hard, just like it did in roller derby. This was exhilarating and frightening at the same time.

If she didn’t win, she would at least know that she’d done what was right for her.

“You get me, Gianna. More than anyone else ever has. I’ve been scared of ending up with someone like Cari again, but you’ve proven over and over again that I don’t have to be scared of you.” She slid her hands down over Gianna’s shoulders and down to her waist. “I couldn’t promise you anything as long as I wasn’t sure I was a whole person. But now I know I am. You helped me figure it out. If you say no, I’ll be brokenhearted, but I’ll still be me.”

“Megan,” Gianna whispered. “You know I want this.”

Megan smiled. “I just want you to confirm for me that I haven’t screwed the whole thing up. I’ve kind of been a douche to you…”

Gianna lifted her hands to the back of Megan’s head and pulled it down. Their lips pressed together, kissing, pulling, biting, hot and wet. After not enough time, Gianna pulled her head away again. “That’s to show you I’m serious.”

  Megan grinned. “Are you serious?”

“I love you,” Gianna said. “Want to move into my unnecessarily huge apartment with me?”

“Won’t your parents mind? You said they helped you pay for it.”

“Babe,” Gianna declared, “they are going to absolutely love you. In fact, I want you to meet them this weekend. You up for it?”

“Yes,” Megan said, and surprised herself a little bit by how much she meant it. She wanted Gianna in her life entirely—and that meant her family would be part of her life, too. Gianna had mentioned her parents enough and in positive enough terms that Megan was actually excited to meet them.

“And am I going to get to meet your family?”

Megan grimaced. “I’ll set something up with my mom, but it might take me a little longer to get around to my dad and Bonnie. You don’t want to meet them if you don’t have to.”

“Megan. Babe. Sweetheart.” Gianna pulled Megan’s head down for another kiss. Megan was starting to get lightheaded. “I want everything about you. That means the crappy parts, too. Can I deck your sister when I meet her?”

Megan laughed and shook her head. “She’s not so bad anymore. If you ever see Cari in the street, though, she’s the one that deserves it.”

“Nah,” Gianna said. “The best revenge is living well. I’ll just show her how happy you are without her.”

Megan gave Gianna a squeeze. “I am happy. You know that, right?”

Gianna kissed her again, this time with tongue, a wet heat that went all the way down to Megan’s sex. She shivered, all her nerves suddenly on alert.

“Have we talked enough?” Gianna whispered.

Megan nodded, swallowing. “Don’t you need to get home? You have work in the morning.”

“I’ll call out sick. I’ve been planning ahead for this day.”

Megan allowed herself a grin. “You were that sure of me?”

Gianna laughed. “Well, not this specifically. But that’s why I’ve made sure to have lesson plans, so a sub can fill in for me. The kids will be fine. Tonight, all I want is you. And tomorrow I’ll drive you to your job interview so your nice outfit won’t get messed up on the bus.”

“You just want me to get the job so I can help pay rent.”

Gianna slid her hands down, cupping Megan’s ass. “You mean it? You’ll move in with me?”

Megan didn’t have to answer aloud. Noises started above, rhythmic thumps, suddenly interrupted by a high-pitched screaming. She pointed upward just as the thumping stopped.

Well, let’s make the most of it,” Gianna said, taking Megan’s hand and tugging her toward the bedroom. “And let’s take our time. We have many years to come, right?”

“Yeah,” Megan said, stepping behind Gianna to push her down onto the bed. “But that doesn’t mean I don’t want to take you fast and wet.”

Gianna grabbed Megan by the upper arms and pulled her down after her, then rolled on top, straddling Megan and pinning her down onto the bed. “Slow,” she whispered, planting a kiss on Megan’s lips as she trailed the tips of her fingers over Megan’s collarbone.

“Fast,” Megan countered, plunging her hand down the front of Gianna’s jeans. She was already wet and slippery, and she cried out when Megan’s hands slid between her lips.

“Slow down, babe,” she moaned, her fingertips gliding over Megan’s breasts, her eyes drifting closed.

“Never.” Megan pushed two fingers inside Gianna and pressed her thumb to her clit. “You know I’m fast and you like it.”

Gianna just moaned, grinding down onto Megan’s hand. She seemed to be past the point of arguing. Megan figured she had won.

But when Gianna had finished, she took over, and she kissed every inch of Megan’s body, piece by piece. Her lips were hot and wet and slow, and Megan writhed on the bed, soaked in sweat. No matter how much she begged, though, Gianna wouldn’t go any faster.

As Gianna’s lips closed around Megan’s throbbing, swollen clit, all she could think was, I guess I did my best.
