The Reluctant Medium

“I dare them to try to collect.” She was still grinning, but her face grew serious, “Promise me?”

  Ugh, another one.

  “Anything, Karson.”

“Promise me you won’t let our stories fade away. Promise me you will take them down, all the details and share our sides with the world.”

I knew I would promise rather I would do anything or not. But how could I lie to Karson? To the one spirit I felt more connected with than any other?

I looked her deep in the face, “I will do my best.”

She scoffed at me, “Ha!!! Yeah, I don’t think so!”

I blushed. She’d seen right through my lie. “I will really do my best.”

“That is not what I asked, is it? I asked you to promise to do it.” She had stopped walking, simply stood on the tiny ledge.

  I took a deep breath. “I promise.”

“See, that wasn’t so bad.” She jumped off the ledge towards me. “Do you want me to tell you a bit more before I go?”

I nodded vigorously. She smiled and told me a bit more about her brother, sharing which prison he was in, and asked if I could look in on him from time to time.

I agreed, wondering how that visit would go.

She retold parts of her story that I had already heard, but I was sure it was to make sure I didn’t miss any of the details.

“It’s time.” She said, looking at the sky. The sun had begun to set, washing the campus ablaze with beautiful golden light.

  “I promise Karson.”

She smiled as she stood, “I know. Thank you.” She walked to the edge of the building. And turned, “You know, if I would have lived, I think we would have been friends.”

I grinned widely, “I think we are friends.”

She smiled and jumped back up on the ledge. She turned toward me and waved, then gently stepped off. She vanished instantly, and I ran to the edge, to see – to see what, I wasn’t sure.

Nothing was there. I could feel she was gone. It felt like his grandpa.

I sniffed, realizing I had been crying.

As I walked back to my dorm, tears streamed down my face. It was silly really, she was better off, she was now at peace, but I would miss her. She had become one of my first ghost friends in a way.

I stopped in the thin evening sun, setting upon another day. The nights were warming and giving students the feeling of summer just around the corner. I heard the few groups left talking and laughing, joking as the evening started to turn into nightlife. I grabbed my laptop and headed back to the roof. The one place I knew I wouldn’t be bothered or interrupted.

I reached the roof, to catch the sun on its final minutes of splendor. I made a promise, people would know her story. I promised, people would have a chance to know her side, all their sides.

I wiped tears again from my cheeks, as a took in the beautiful sunset. I inhaled another deep breath, and typed, Chapter one.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

GG believes characters are the story. Sure, plot is key, but the best tale is boring if it's told using two dimensional characters.

Strong, flawed, hot-mess characters are her specialty- in both main and supporting roles. "We all have flaws. People relate to characters that are as lost as they are at times."

Focusing mostly on the Young Adult and New Adult genre, Anderson is drawn to the fantasy world, relishing in escape it provides.

GG's close ties with her family have influenced her writing heavily. She laughs and adds, "Each book you will find a common-sense character that holds the others together. The levelheaded one who has the rational thoughts. In a lot of ways, that's my older sister in my life."

GG lives in her home state of Idaho with her husband and daughter and her precious black Cat. Besides writing GG eats, breathes, and sleeps Collegiate cheer and dance.

She has published young adult novels The Guardians of Feral Mountain, and The Elemental Souls. Her new adult novels include The Reluctant Witch, and The Reluctant Medium
