Clarity (Hate to Love You Book 1)

“I could ask you the same thing,” she said, trying and failing to maintain a smile.
“We’re talking about you right now. How are things?”
“I’m okay. I’m still getting used to it.”
I reached across the small table and squeezed one of her hands. “It’ll get easier.”
Anita’s bottom lip quivered for a moment. “One minute we were engaged and then . . . we weren’t. I don’t know what happened.”
“I know it’s still fresh. Do you want to talk about it?”
“No. Yes. No,” she said, shaking her head. “But why? We were planning the wedding. We wanted to wait until after I graduated, then he decides he doesn’t want to be tied down? And that he wants to see other people? How does that happen? How do you go from planning and booking venues to seeing other people?”
“It just does sometimes.”
“Do you think he was seeing someone else?”
My gut said yes. One hundred percent yes. “No, probably not.”
Her big brown eyes stared at me, looking for an answer. “But why dump me, then? Just because?”
“Guys are weird.”
“But I didn’t see any signs. Nothing, at least nothing I wanted to see. But looking back, maybe I should have known. We were spending less time together, barely having sex. And then when he got that job, well, it was like I was an afterthought. Maybe he met someone at work. Do you think that happened?”
Of course. “Who knows? But does it matter?”
“No, I suppose not. It’s just so humiliating to have to call off an engagement. Not to mention all the plans we were making and canceling what we had booked. My aunt even had the material for my sari all picked out.”
“I was looking forward to your big fat Indian wedding.”
Anita laughed at that. “I’m still having a big fat Indian wedding, just not with Mike.”
How many times in the last year had she sent me pictures of wedding cakes, decorations, material for her sari, invitation ideas . . . and then it was over. I don’t know if Mike had gotten cold feet or whether he had met someone else. I was certain it was the latter.
“People will forget about it right away. Something else will happen and this will be a distant memory.”
“I hope so. Man, can you believe this? Who would have thought a year ago that both of us would be single? How the hell did that happen?”
It happened because Jason dumped me too.
