This is Not a Fairytale

“Hey, little man!” Mason said as he laughed and swung Ash up into his arms. You’d have to be certified heartless not to be moved at the sight. Mason’s eyes landed on me, and he smiled slowly as he drank me in. Then he put Ash down at our feet, and pulled me in for a kiss. “I have missed you, beautiful,” he said between kisses, and my arms went around his neck.

He pulled away and turned to my parents. “What a surprise! Will, Eliza, it’s so good to see you! Don’t you have an anniversary coming up soon?”

When I lifted my arms to embrace Mason, my left hand had been on full display, and since that very moment, my father hadn’t taken his eyes off of my embellished, sparkling ring finger.

“It’s tonight, actually,” my dad answered, still looking at my hand. Then he turned behind him to the waitress, and said, “We’re going to need another extra seat, please.”

  The End

  Author’s note…

I want to thank you for making it this far in this wild ride. I got the idea for this story after hearing about a similar event where a girl and her father’s best friend fell in love. The story really struck a nerve with me, and I was quick to say it was unrealistic and wrong. But then a hopelessly romantic friend of mine dared me to think of a possibility where it could not only happen but happen in such a way that you believe in them as individuals and root for their happily ever after, even if they aren’t truly destined for one. I didn’t put any thought into it because I still didn’t believe it could happen. But the characters had other plans for me. I dreamt of Scarlet and Mason one night, and I have rooted for them ever since. I hope you fell just as in love with them as I did. If you didn’t, that’s okay too. Because it’s raw and it’s real. And real life is not a fairytale. Xoxo, R.
