“I just met you, so now nobody else matters,” Uncle Jimmy told her.

“Oh, snap. Playa over here pulling it all out, I see. Unc, I know how you get down, so I don’t have to worry about my mama no more. Just don’t hurt her, man. She deserves the world,” Elton said.

“You damn right she does, and she’ll get it if I have anything to do with it,” Uncle Jimmy said.

“I guess you have some packing to do, Mama,” Elton said with a smile.

“I guess so, son,” Ms. Ella said and smiled back at her baby.

  Chapter Four

“You don’t have to stay here with me today. The only thing they’re gonna do is take the patches off, ask me if I see anything, flash a light in my eyes, then put the patches back on again so we can do it all over next week,” Lawrynn complained.

Murder didn’t even bother to look at her or respond to what she said. He just shook his head because each day that went past, it seemed that her attitude got worse and worse. So far, he was doing good with not entertaining the arguments that she tried to start. She couldn’t argue with herself, so he would just let her talk. She was due to go home tomorrow, even though she didn’t know it. The doctor told Murder a few days ago to give him time to get the house prepared for her.

“You need to figure out what you want to eat after we leave the doctor’s office. I’m gonna run and go get it then come right back,” he told her.

They were walking through the halls of the hospital. It would’ve been easier if the doctor came to her in her room, but she needed to learn how to move around until her sight came back.

“I don’t care what you bring back,” she said sadly.

He was definitely going to talk to her about all this sad shit she had going on.

“You need to cheer up, man. I know things ain’t how you want them to be, but you’re still living. Man, what the fuck?” he said out of frustration.

“You don’t have to be here at all since you sound like I get on your nerves,” she told him.

“Just bring your ass before I push your ass in one of these closets and fuck some sense into you. You know I hate repeating myself. I’m not going nowhere, so don’t say no shit like that again,” he told her as he sped up his steps.

Lawrynn got quiet on him, but he knew her well enough to know that she had an attitude with him again today.

They got to the doctor’s office quicker than he expected. Just like always, he helped her take her seat and took the seat next to her. The doctor looked between the two of them, sensing that something was off. He took a deep breath before he started talking.

“Before we start talking about the condition of your eyes, I need to ask you how you are doing mentally and emotionally. I may not be a psychologist but are there any feelings of anger or hurt that you want to discuss?” he asked, looking at both of them.

They were both quiet. Murder was waiting for Lawrynn to talk while Lawrynn was trying to put her feelings into words.

“I feel like I’m a burden on him. He has businesses and things that need to be run. Staying here with me day in and day out can’t be helping him,” she said.

The doctor noticed that Murder was about to say something, so he held a finger up for him not to speak yet.

“I’m sure if he had something that required his attention, he would be doing it. Why is it hard for you to accept that you are his top priority?” the doctor asked.

“I’ve never been anyone’s top priority. Now that I’m blind, things shouldn’t change. I feel like I’ve just brought problems to his life. I’m the reason him and his best friend aren’t as close anymore. Now I have to have someone with me most of the time. I’m just a big problem to him. I know one day he’ll get tired and leave me then I’ll be alone,” she said. Now she was all into her ugly cry.

“You can’t keep thinking that he’s going to leave you. From what I see, he’s all in with you. You are his top priority, and I doubt it’s just because of your condition. How are you handling your feelings? I know some people, especially females, tend to lash out if they are uncomfortable about something. Just sit him down and talk to him. Men sometimes are blind as you are when it comes to women. I love your energy as a couple. In order for you all to stay solid you can always call and talk to me about anything.

“My wife came down with Intraocular melanoma, which is melanoma of the eye, while I was in my last two years of medical school. Unfortunately for her it had spread to her brain, and she passed away a little over a year later after her diagnosis. I understand the situation that you both are in right now. Just be thankful that your vision loss is only temporary, and you still have your good health besides that fact. Now that we have all the emotional stuff out of the way, let’s see how you’re reacting to the drops,” the doctor said as he got up from his desk to walk over to Lawrynn.

Watching the doctor take the bandages off Lawrynn made Murder nervous. His palms were sweaty, and his heart beat was moving faster than usual. The one time before now that they came in for this, Lawrynn was so heartbroken that there had been no change in her eye sight. Remembering her crying for hours after that visit scared Murder. He missed the laughing, smart mouth, feisty, and beautiful Lawrynn that he fell in love with. Knowing she was still in there somewhere hiding made him hurt for her even more. He didn’t want her to lose herself completely behind her stupid ass cousin.

The last bandage was taken off as Murder held his breath.

Lawrynn felt the rush of cool air on her face where the bandages were. She blinked her eyes a few times. A deafening thickness of the air in the room had everyone on pause. Opening her eyes, she looked around. The last time she had done this there was nothing but darkness, but this time was different.

“Lawrynn, do you see anything?” Murder asked anxiously.

She moved her head around. Blurry shadows were all that she could see. She could make out a few colors but not completely. The colors looked more like a blurred-out picture that you see on social media sites. Amazement that she could see the undefined mess of colors was enough to make her cry. She felt Murder place his hand over hers to comfort her.

“Everything is blurry. I can see some colors, but that’s blurry too,” she said as she wiped the tears from her cheeks.

“Can you tell me how many fingers I’m holding up in front of you right now?” the doctor asked.

  “No,” she answered.

“I know you may not think this is good, but this is very good news. We’re not going to put the bandages back on. I’m going to give you some dark shades for you to wear. Once you’re released, I’ll give you prescriptions for eye drops. For right now, you need to keep the glasses on at all times, especially when you’re outside. I think you will have to wear the glasses for the next two weeks before we can move you to just the drops. Don’t stress over your progress because everyone’s body is different. There’s no right or wrong way to heal,” the doctor said.

“Okay, Doctor, thank you for all your help,” she told him.

Murder took Lawrynn’s hand and led her out of the office. He knew she said her vision was blurry, but until she could tell him that she could fully see, he wasn’t gonna let her do shit alone. Looking over at her, he saw that she was still crying.

“What’s the deal with the tears?” he asked when they got on the elevator.

“Thank you for being here for me,” she told him.

“I’m ya man. As long as I have breath in my body and a beating heart, you’re gonna be good,” Murder said.

“Do you know if Nikki is still in the hospital?” she asked.

“Yeah, last I heard she was. They have her hooked up to a bunch of monitors and shit according to Pain. Why you ask?”

“I want to go talk to her before we go back to the room.”

“Are you sure you want to do that?”

Murder hadn’t seen Nikki, and he had only exchanged a few text messages with Pain. He wasn’t sure about Lawrynn going to see Nikki, but as long
as he was there, she would be good.

“Did you hear me?” Lawrynn asked when Murder never responded.

“Yeah, I heard ya. I don’t need you going in here to fight that girl. She’s pregnant, and you’re blind. That shit ain’t gonna work,” he told her.

“I just want to talk to her then we can leave,” she told him.

  “Okay cool.

They moved in silence to the room that Nikki was in. When they entered, Nikki was on the bed hooked up to a bunch of monitors. Pain was in a chair in the corner pecking away at his phone screen.

“Go ’head and say what you gotta say. She’s looking right at you,” Murder said.

Lawrynn took a deep breath as slid the glasses that the doctor gave her off her face.

“Nikki, I just came by to let you see the damage that you did to me. I may be scarred for the rest of my life, but I’ll never stop living. Never in my life did I think my own cousin would do something so callous to me. What I don’t understand is why you even took it this far. You already had Pain and a baby by him. Why not just go on with your life? I didn’t care about what you and him had going on. He made his choice when he left me. You had already won,” Lawrynn said as tears flowed freely.

Murder caressed her back to show her that he was right there with her.

“Stop making this about you. It’s never been about you,” Nikki fussed. She was sick of Lawrynn always playing the victim.

“You made it about me when you threw that shit in my face. What the fuck are you on?” Lawrynn asked.

“I know you didn’t come here looking for an apology or an explanation because I don’t fucking have none of that. Now, every time you look in the mirror you’ll think of me,” Nikki said with a smile. Murder immediately stopped caressing Lawrynn’s back. “Oh, my bad, you can’t look in a mirror, can you?” she added just to be the bitch that she was.

“You’ll need me before all of this is over,” Lawrynn said as she walked out of the room.

Murder was right there beside her. He turned to give Nikki a look that needed no words to influence her. From that look alone, she knew that she was definitely on borrowed time.

  Chapter Five

Allen stood outside of Deshanna’s door trying to decide on if he should knock or just kick the fucking thing in. After hearing all the shit that Nell’s mother was implying and blaming him for, he definitely had some anger to get rid of. He kicked the door in and was greeted with music blasting throughout the house. He could hear Deshanna singing and the shower water running as he got closer to her bedroom. There were clothes laid out on the bed as if she was about to go somewhere.

Allen walked into the bathroom and was surprised that Deshanna hadn’t sensed that she was no longer in the bathroom alone. He stood there for a few minutes thinking that she was about to get out of the shower. When she never did, Allen took it upon himself to get this shit moving. He opened the shower door, grabbed a hand full of Deshanna’s weave, and yanked her out of the shower. Seeing her trying to get her feet planted on the floor in all her nakedness was comical to Allen.

“Oh shit. Allen, what are you doing?” she said.

“Shut the fuck up. Did you really think you were gonna be able to do that shit to my girl and go on about your life?” he asked her.

“Girl? Since when?” she asked, still trying to get his hands out of her weave. “Let go of my hair. It hurts,” she said.

“I should put you head through one of these thin ass walls in this fucking apartment. Stupid ass hoe. It’s dumb hoes like you that make shit bad for the honest hoes who keep it one hundred with niggas,” he argued.

“You didn’t tell me you were talking to someone. How was I supposed to know she meant something to you? I was pissed because you never took me out anywhere like that,” she complained.

“You’re just a fuck to me. Why should I tell you anything? I guess that’s what happens when you fuck a chick more than three times. I would never wife you or take you anywhere besides the backyard to fuck. I’ve never even told your ass shit about me, so how the hell you figure we were anything special?” Allen asked with his face balled up. Nothing she said made any sense to him.

“Why not me? Tell me that,” Deshanna said.

“Fuck you mean why not you? You’ve got a set of twins that you don’t have custody off. You’re not even trying to get them back either. On top of that, you’re still fucking with Monk and Tone,” he said.

Deshanna looked surprised that he even knew about them. She always thought she was being careful enough for them not to know about each other.

“Yeah, with ya hoe ass. We know all about each other. Shit, the last time I fucked you, I went back and met up with them niggas. When you called Monk, he had your dumb ass on speaker talking about how you was playing in ya pussy and shit. I told them that night if they wanted to keep fucking with you that was on them. I have no issues with you being the best hoe you can be, but you didn’t even keep it one hundred about your level of hoeness. That’s why I cut ya ass off. You couldn’t just find another dick to hop on, though, you had to jump on my woman,” he said.

Allen wasn’t planning to putting his hands on her, but before he could stop himself, he slapped the shit out of her. She immediately hit the floor.

  “You hit me!” she screamed.

“Obviously, bitch. I know you didn’t think we were just going to talk. You better be happy your ass is still breathing,” he told her. His phone rang, and he answered it, knowing who it was. “Come on in. The door is broke any fucking way,” he said then hung up.

“Who the fuck do you have coming to my house?” Deshanna asked, and Allen only laughed at her.

“Where the hell you at?” a female voice asked.

“We in the bathroom,” he answered.

“Why y’all in here?” the female asked.

“Her ass was in the shower when I got here. Are you by yourself?”

“No, the girls are in the living room. Where the fuck is my money, cousin?” she asked.

Allen laughed because his cousin was always the wild one. Antoinette was smart as hell, but she also was the fighting cousin. She could go to the gas station for gas and end up fighting someone. She wasn’t all that big, but she was known to knock out a few niggas in her day. She wasn’t a talker or anyone who would fight just for anything. Whenever she got into it, she always had reason.

There were always other ways that she could’ve handled the issue, but with her, fighting was the only way to settle things. When Allen called her to let her know he had a problem with a female, she was putting on her shoes before even asking about the issue. Antoinette didn’t care what the problem was. She knew she could kick some ass and make some money doing it, and that’s all she needed to know. Allen dug in his pocket and gave Antoinette the envelope.

“I hope this is enough with your big priced ass,” he said with a smile.

“Hospital or damn near dead?” she asked.

“What the hell is going on, Allen? Who the fuck is this?” Deshanna asked.

Antoinette responded by kicking her in the face.

“Shut the fuck up. Grown folks are talking,” she said.

“Damn near dead. She needs to learn to stay the fuck away from what belongs to me,” he said.

“Cool. Go ’head and leave. We got this,” Antoinette told Allen.

Allen left the apartment and headed for the hospital, hoping that Nell’s mother wasn’t there. He hadn’t seen here since Nell put her out of the room, but he knew she would be back. Knowing that he would have to at least speak to her without using colorful words was what he wasn’t in the head space for right now. He pulled into the gas station to get gas and something to drink before going to sit with Nell for the rest of the day. The hour and a half he had been away from her felt too long to him. He was relieved that Nell didn’t blame him for what happened.

“Shouldn’t you be at the hospital with my daughter since your side bitch put her there?” Allen h
eard from behind him.

He shook his head but remained quiet.

“I need a fill up on pump ten and this drink right here,” Allen said.

“You must’ve ran all your gas out riding that bitch around while my daughter’s in the hospital,” La-La said loud enough for everyone in the store to hear.

The guy at the register looked like he had some questions for Allen. Allen just shook his head and walked out of the store. Just like he thought, she came behind him, still going off at the mouth.

La-La didn’t like the fact that Allen was ignoring her. She needed him to say something to her. Being that he hung with Murder, she figured he would eventually cuss her out like Murder had done her sister. When he did, she was going to record his words just to let Nell hear it herself. Nell would never stay with a man who disrespected her mother regardless of the situation. Allen being quiet wasn’t helping right now.

She needed Nell to be single, so she could call on her for money or whatever else she needed. If her and Allen got serious, that would hinder how much she could count on Nell to pay some of her bills and pay for her trips.

La-La walked up on Allen while he was pumping his gas. “You can’t ignore me much longer. I’ll never accept you into my family, nigga,” she said.

Allen stayed silent. When it was time for him to put up the pump, he was sure to get gasoline on La-La.

“Motherfucker, you did that on purpose!” she yelled.

“Why are you all in my space, sir/ma’am?” Allen said.

“Sir/ma’am, what the fuck is that? Oh, you trying to be funny. It ain’t gonna be funny when I tell my daughter you tried to kill me,” she told him. “He’s trying to kill me,” she started yelling.

Allen pulled out his phone to call Nell. He needed to hear her voice, so he wouldn’t choke her mom to death.

“Hey, look, I love you more than I ever thought I would love a woman that I don’t share the same blood with, but ya mom wants me to kill her ass. She’s all up here at the gas station talking that stupid shit. I sprayed her ass with the gas, and now she telling folks I’m trying to kill her. What the fuck is up with ya momma?” he asked her.
