“I don’t know what’s goin’ on with her. Just get up here so I can see you and know that you’re alright,” Nell told him.

“Well, since the fucking jakes just pulled up, if I’m not there within the hour, tell Murder or Pain to come bail my ass out. I love you, Lanelle,” he told her then ended the call before she could say anything.

“Sir, we received a complaint that you tried to kill the lady over there. Can you tell us what’s going on?” the officer asked.

“The bitch is crazy as fuck. She’s my girl’s mom. My girl got into it with one of my exes, and she’s been fucking with me ever since. I didn’t say much of nothing to her ass. She’s got gas all on her because she was standing too fucking close to me. I know they got a camera around here that will show I ain’t do shit to her ass,” Allen calmly said.

“I’m gonna go in and see if we can view the tape. Please don’t go anywhere,” the officer said.

Allen sat on the hood of his car while the officer went inside the store. He texted Nell to let her know he was okay and Murder to let him know what was going on.

The police came out and headed straight for Allen.

“Sir, we saw everything on the tape. We just want to know if you would like to press charges on the lady for harassment? I also want to commend you for keeping your cool. I know some people who have shot females for less,” the officer said.

“Nah, let her make it, but let her know she needs to tread lightly,” he told them.

“Well, we’re gonna file a report so you will have some documentation to fall back on if she doesn’t stop,” the officer told him.

Allen shook both of their hands and got in the car. He was sure to ride past La-La and toss her a head nod, though.

  Chapter Six

“I don’t know what the fuck is up with females in your family, but you gonna fuck around and have all your OG’s missing,” Murder told Lawrynn.

“What happened now? You know I haven’t talked to my mom in a few days. She’s still upset about you pulling a gun on her and calling her all types of bitches,” Lawrynn told him.

“Okay, and what is that supposed to mean to me? I still have a problem with how she’s coming to bat for Nikki and not you. Everybody should know by now that you’re not to be fucked with. That goes for family too. I know you didn’t think she was gonna get a pass because she’s your mom. No fucks given at all. She should be at that hoe’s head just like everybody else. I still say it has to be a reason that she’s all team Nikki. She better be across town when I find out what her real reason is,” Murder said.

Murder and Lawrynn were sitting on the couch in the living room. She had her legs across his lap while he watched a college football game. Lawrynn was still wearing the glasses the doctor had given her. With the drops that the doctor had given Murder to put in her eyes, she could now make out the shape of things better. Of course, he had her wearing the glasses just as the doctor told them. Lawrynn was anxious to get them off more and more each day.

Lawrynn never thought that Murder would be as attentive to her as he had been throughout this entire ordeal. Whenever she was up, he was there with her. She knew about him leaving the house when he thought she was sleeping, but she figured that he needed to handle things, so she never let on that she was awake most of the time. As the days went by, she began to wonder about the reason behind her mother’s actions. She felt the same way Murder did; there was something going on that she didn’t know about.

“Are you good over there? Do you need anything?” Murder asked her.

He could tell by the shifting in her body and the steadiness of her head facing out the window that she was thinking about something.

“You can’t know everything that I’m thinking Maurice,” she said with a smile.

“Oh shit, I’m Maurice now,” he said.

“Somethings off, and I was just trying to figure out what it was. Think about it. Where is my Auntie Letitica? Her daughter is going through hell mentally and physically, and she’s a fucking no show. I know she knows what’s going on. From what I understand, Nikki hasn’t even asked about her mother this whole time,” she said, revealing her thoughts to him.

“You can’t worry about that now. We can’t have you getting all stressed out and stopping your progress. The truth will fall in your lap when it’s supposed to and not before. Just worry about getting your sight back fully so you can watch this dick slide in and out of you,” he said with a smile.

“Nasty ass,” she said and hit him in the arm.

“You know I haven’t been inside you since before all this bullshit happened. I’m definitely knocking you up with triplets when I do get inside you. I need you like a crackhead needs a hit right now but making sure you’re okay is more important. Besides, I’ve got the rest of our days on earth to fuck the shit out of you,” he told her.

Lawrynn laughed at him. Seeing her smile was all Murder wanted to do every day. She was showing him just how strong she was every day. He knew some females who would get in an argument with their families or boyfriend, and they would cry all damn day behind it. Lawrynn would get upset sometimes and withdraw from him, but she never let what happened to her stop her from living.

Lawrynn had been on Murder’s radar for a while, but he never really understood the connection they had. Sitting there with her thinking about all that she’s been through, he decided that the connection with them was simple to explain. They were meant to be. He had asked Pain to be his best man at his wedding just to see what he would say. Yes, he had thought about marrying Lawrynn, but deep down, he just thought that they would eventually do it. At that moment, he knew that eventually was gonna come sooner than later.

Later that night, he waited for Lawrynn to go to bed before he left to take his nightly ride. Being with Lawrynn all day, he used this time to make phones calls and handle his business. Tonight, he was pulling up to Ms. Ella’s house. He had texted his uncle earlier to let him know that he was coming over later. Pulling up, he saw Uncle Jimmy on the porch smoking a blunt. He shook his head because no matter how old Uncle Jimmy got, he was always gonna keep two rolled bunts on him at all times.

“What’s going on, nephew? When you texted me, I made a few calls. I have the boys on standby just in case we need to ride out,” he said to Murder as he approached the porch.

“It’s nothing like that, Unc. You need to slow down. How are you gonna ride out with an AARP card in your pocket?” Murder asked and laughed.

“Don’t let the age fool you. Is Lawrynn okay?” Uncle Jimmy asked.

“Yeah, she’s good. Her sight isn’t as blurry anymore, so she should be good in a couple of weeks,” Murder answered.

“Okay, so why am I sitting on the porch with you when I could be laying up under your auntie?” he asked.

Uncle Jimmy loved his nephew dearly but laying up under Ms. Ella every night came to a close second to that love.

“Law Baby’s family is on her mind heavy, and I don’t like the shit. She’s wondering about her mom’s actions and where her auntie is. I don’t want any of that to stop her from getting better. I want to just say fuck her family, but I don’t want to sound like too much of an asshole. I got a feeling that there’s something going on in her family that she doesn’t know about. I don’t know how much more drama she can take,” he told his uncle.

“You have to let her figure things out on her own when it comes to her family. I get that you love her, and you want to protect her, but you have to let this run its course. Just be there for her like you’ve been doing. You can’t pull a gun on the whole family,” Uncle Jimmy told him.

Murder shook his head because he thought that Uncle Jimmy was gonna let him make it with that one. He hadn’t said anything in all this time, so why was he even mentioning it now?

“That was a heat of the moment type of thing. She knows she’s dead wrong for being on that hoe’s side after what she did,” Murder said.

  Just thinking about Lawrynn
s own mother trying to be there for Nikki pissed him off even more.

“What are you gonna do when the holidays come around and they all get drunk and start talking shit to each other? How about when one of them dies and shit goes left like it usually does in families? Your gun isn’t always the answer. Remember that,” Uncle Jimmy said.

“You not gonna ask me if I want to hit the blunt?” Murder asked.

“No. I don’t know what you and Lawrynn have been over there doing. Just like you don’t know what I’ve been doing to Ella,” Uncle Jimmy said with a smile.

“When Law Baby’s sight comes back I’m gonna propose to her,” Murder blurted out.

“Are you asking her to marry you because you love her? Or, are you asking her because you fear that whatever she finds out will break her, and she’ll need something to hold on to?” Uncle Jimmy asked.

“I love the fuck out of her. Yeah, I think whatever it is will break her down, but she’s not gonna stop being her. Truthfully, I got the ring after all the shit went down with Nikki and we found out she was gonna be okay. The thought of losing her fucked me up bad. I was lost at just the thought of losing her. That’s when I knew I couldn’t live without her,” he answered truthfully.

“Then make sure she can’t live without you either. I like her for you, she’s a good look. How does Pain feel about you wanting to marry her?” he asked Murder.

“I asked him to be the best man one day. He was cool with it. I still gotta keep my eye on him, though,” Murder said.

“Always keep your head on a swivel. I think Pain has too much other shit going on right now to be worried out you and Lawrynn. Just keep an eye on him. Now can you take your ass home, so I can go be up under my woman?” he told his nephew as he finished his blunt.

“Damn, just like that, huh?” Murder asked as he stood to his feet.

“Just make sure you do like I told you. Just be there for her and don’t go all cave man,” he told Murder just before walking in the house and closing the door behind him.

Murder chuckled at his Uncle’s rudeness.

Heading home, Murder thought about what his uncle had said. Maybe pulling a gun on Lawrynn’s mom was a little too far. Just as quick as the thought came, it left. Nah, I’ll just shoot her ass the next time. Straight up.

  Chapter Seven

Pain sat in the hospital room getting frustrated at the predicament he was in. He knew he didn’t need to keep thinking about it because nothing was going to change. He was still in love with Lawrynn, Nikki was having his baby, but there was one shining light in his eyes, and that was Connie. They were constantly texting each other.

Connie hadn’t come back to Nikki’s room, and he was fine with that. Nikki wasn’t going to act like she had some sense if Connie were to come through the door. Something about Connie definitely had Pain interested in getting to know her, but he was going to take things slow with her right now. He chuckled at the fact that he had placed himself in the friend zone.

“Do you know anything about Lawrynn and her progress?” Nikki asked.

“No,” he answered, not bothering to look at her. In fact, the fake concern she was showing right now irritated him.

“Why are you being like this toward me?” Nikki asked, only to be ignored by Pain. “If this is how you’re gonna be when the baby gets here then why even bother to be up here with me?”

“Stop talking to me. After the baby gets here and it’s confirmed that it’s mine, I’m filing for custody,” he told her.

“You got me fucked up if you think I’m gonna let you take my baby away from me. We’re supposed to be a family,” Nikki said.

“How the hell you figure all that? I’m not fucking with you, period. I’m not trying to turn a hoe into a housewife. Your ass is gonna be in the streets anyway. You be calling in some favors from them niggas you’ve been fucking with. My kid ain’t gonna need lace fronts or red bottoms. I’m gonna do for my kid no doubt, but your ass is on your own,” he said. “Oh yeah, if the kid ain’t mine, you better find his daddy. The kid is gonna need him with you being dead and all that good shit,” Pain said with a serious expression.

Nikki just watched him as he totally ignored her for whatever bitch was on his phone. This was supposed to be different. Pain was supposed to be with her, loving and caring for his family. She was giving him the one thing that no one else could, not even Lawrynn’s precious ass, his first born child.

“Pain, I love you,” Nikki said.

“No, you don’t. You love the fact that you came between Lawrynn and me. You can sit right there and keep that fake love to yourself. I don’t need the shit,” he told her.

“Pain, don’t take my baby from me. This baby is all I have left of what we were,” she said, forcing tears to run down her face.

Tears always worked with any man she’d come in contact with. They couldn’t resist her. She put her face in her hands and got more dramatic. Nikki felt something fall onto her hospital bed, and slowly she raised her face to see a box of tissue. She looked at Pain, confused and unaware of what the box was for.

“Whenever you finish crying or whatever it is you call yourself doing, wipe your face off,” Pain told her and went back to his seat.

The door opened, and in came Nikki’s aunties Laura and La-La. Pain watched them both as they entered the room. Laura was being a little too attentive to Nikki from what Pain saw. He just looked at them as they talked to her.

“Have the doctors come in here to tell you when you’re going home?” La-La asked.

“He actually said three more days in here at least. That’s fine with me, though. I’d rather be here instead of at my condo lonely as fuck. I’m still gonna be on bed rest, so that’s gonna make things even worse,” Nikki whined.

“The lord will work everything out, Nikki, you just have to be patient,” Laura told her.

“Have you heard from my mom? I’ve been trying to call her, but she’s not answering for me,” Nikki said.

Laura and La-La looked at each other for a second before they both answered.

“No,” they said in unison and a little too loud for Pain’s liking.

He was sure that there was some bullshit going on with the sisters.

“Does she even know that I’m in the hospital?” she asked.

“She knows, but she’s way too busy to miss work and come down here. Besides, you’ve got Pain sitting here with you. I’m sure she’ll come as soon as she can,” Laura said. “Don’t get yourself sick waiting for people that you care about to show that they care about you,” she continued to tell Nikki.

“When did she start working? The last I knew she was sitting home smoking up her state checks. Just tell me the truth. She’s out there on her knees sucking somebody’s dick for a smoke of whatever drug is in front of her. My mother was never concerned about my wellbeing. I learned that a long time ago. I was just hoping that something would change with her. I shouldn’t have asked that question in the first place,” Nikki said.

Laura hoped that excuse would stop the questions about her mother. They both knew the question was coming. They had prepared for it, they all did.

“La-La, come walk with me to the cafeteria,” Laura said, hoping her sister caught the hint.

When La-La got up, they both headed out the door.

“I know you don’t need shit out of the cafeteria, so what’s up?” La-La said as soon as they stepped on the elevator.

“We need to figure out what we’re going to say about her mother. That’s not gonna be her last time asking about her,” Laura said.

“Tell her ass the truth. It’s been long enough, and she needs to know. I don’t know why you’ve never told her. Shit was different back then. You should’ve went about it a different way anyway,” La-La said.

Laura had been avoiding this topic all her life. There was no denying that her secret would come out sooner or later. She had always felt overprotective of Nikki because her sister, Letitica, wasn’t the
best mother around. Laura had stepped in by having Nikki over to the house as often as she could. Letitica was the wild one of the sisters. She would sneak out of the house all the time or sneak boys in.

Laura felt that she was giving her sister some time and space, so she could get her shit together, but she only partied harder. Her occasionally smoking a blunt turned into and addiction to heroin, all within a time span of a year and a half. They never told any of the kids about Letitica’s drug problems. Although her sisters tried to help her out as best they could, she never wanted to help herself.

Laura remembered the day everything hit the fan. She had gone over to get Nikki, only for Letitica to tell her that she was gone with her daddy’s people for the summer.

“What do you mean she’s with her daddy’s people, Trice?” Laura asked.

“Just like I said. Do you want me to write the shit down for you?” Letitica said.

“You don’t know who her damn daddy is. Who the fuck has my niece for the summer?” Laura asked.

“I’m her mama, and I sent her off for the summer. End of the fucking story,” Letitica told her sister.

Laura couldn’t understand why her sister would send her daughter off with strangers because whoever it was, they damn sure weren’t family. She loved her sister, but she was going to have to put hands on her.

“You need to get help while she’s gone. That’ll be perfect timing,” Laura said.

“I only need help getting you off my porch. Get your ass away from here. Don’t you have your own kids to worry about instead of being here looking for mine?” Letitica said.

Letitica knew there was a chance that her daughter could be in danger. She also knew that if she didn’t send her daughter off every summer that there would be a greater chance of her dying. She had let the drugs take over, and now her daughter was probably being made into the biggest hoe at her young age. As long as she sent Nikki away every summer, she could smoke all she wanted. In her mind, as long as they didn’t kill her, she would be okay. If her sisters found out the real reason for Letitica sending Nikki away, they would beat her ass.
