There was a brief pause as the sisters looked at each other. Laura knew her beautiful sister was no longer there. The drugs had messed her up so badly that she was putting her child in the hands of strangers.

  “Are you okay?” La-La asked.

“I knew something was fishy when she kept sending Nikki away. I should’ve stepped in and stopped it. You need to find your sister, so she can explain herself to her child,” Laura said.

“You need to let that go. Letitica made her choices. Don’t lose your daughter because you feel guilty about not helping her way back then. There was nothing you could’ve done,” La-La said.

La-La felt that Laura was doing too much with how she was dealing with this Nikki situation. She loved all her nieces, but her daughter came first in all situations. La-La wasn’t going to go against Nell, but she didn’t care for Allen either. In her mind, Allen was taking her daughter away from her. While she was standing there looking down on her sister’s actions, her own weren’t any better.

“How can I let it go? I just can’t say ‘oh well’ like you do about everything. We should’ve done something,” Laura said.

“You’re gonna mess around and say the same thing when you lose Lawrynn. It’s fine to be there for Nikki, but you haven’t even checked on Lawrynn. What kind of shit are you on?” La-La asked.

“She has big, bad Murder with her. Nikki doesn’t have anybody,” Laura said, trying to justify her actions.

La-La could only shake her head. She knew that this wasn’t going to end well for her sister. The only thing she could do was be there as a shoulder when the shit hits the fan because she was gonna need it.

  Chapter Eight

Allen walked into the room to see Nell sleeping peacefully. He sat down beside her and thought about the night he had. He never liked having to come to blows with anybody about anything. However, when it was time to put in work, that’s exactly what he did. He didn’t regret getting his cousin and her girls to beat up Deshanna. She deserved it and more. Allen hoped that the beating would let her know to stay away from him and Nell.

“I’ll always be here for you, babygirl, no matter what,” he whispered in Nell’s ear before giving her a forehead kiss.

He thought Nell was asleep, but she was far from it. Nell had been up all night wondering what Allen was getting himself into. She knew Allen like no one else did, so she knew deep down what he had done. Thanking the lord that he came back to her in one piece was the first thing she had done when she smelled his cologne.

“I’ll do anything for you, Nell. I even bought you a ring,” Allen said and chuckled to himself.

Nell smiled as much as she could without letting on that she was wide awake. It was weird, but Allen always talked about his feelings and their future when he thought she wasn’t listening.

Allen knew damn well she wasn’t sleep. This was the only time he could talk to her without her interrupting with questions or looking at him funny. It was amazing how they had settled into their routine so easily. Years had been lost between them, and those years were now a distant memory.

“I’m gonna knock you up with twins though, first. How we do with them will let me know if we’re ready for more children,” he said with a smirk.

Nell’s face balled up even though her eyes were closed. Allen fell out laughing. “Just sit up, man. I know you’re awake. You need to brush up on your acting skills,” he said.

Nell sat up and rolled her eyes at him.

  “Twins, Allen?” she asked.

“I had to say something to get a reaction out of you. You don’t play sleep well either,” he told her.

“Did you kill anybody tonight?” Nell asked him the one thing she had been wondering about since he walked in.

“No, I didn’t, but you won’t have to worry about her coming at you again if she’s got any sense. She’s not dead, but we gotta talk about your mother,” he told her.

“I know what happened tonight. I’m not going to make excuses for her because I don’t know what the hell is going on with her. I wish I knew a way to fix this shit with her,” Nell said.

“You need to find out what her problem is with me. I haven’t done shit to her except love you,” Allen told her.

Nell thought about what Allen said. She knew he was right about her mother because she had felt something going on with her when she last saw her, and that was the main reason she put her out. She didn’t need the negative energy around her.

“I’ll try to find out what’s going on with her. Truthfully, they all have been acting weird since Nikki attacked Lawrynn. I don’t know what type of shit they’re sitting on, but I will find out. Something’s going on because they were exchanging looks and shit. I just don’t want you to get in any trouble behind them or anybody else. We’re back together, and we’re in it to win it,” Nell told Allen.

Allen was relieved to hear her say that. He was still on the fence because he knew her mama wasn’t going to stop. He didn’t want to put his hands on her but choking the shit out of her looked real good to him. Nell’s mother was important to her, so he would hold off for as long as he could.

“I hope so, because me choking her ass is not a get out of this relationship card,” he told her seriously. It made her laugh, but he hoped she knew how serious he really was. “Ha-Ha hell, I’m dead ass. Did you call your landlord to let him know you were moving?” Allen asked.

“No, because I’m not technically moving. I’m gonna just be staying at your spot for a while. I’m not giving my place up right now,” she told him.

Yes, Nell loved Allen, but she was no fool by far. There was no way she was going to give up her place without him making it known to all his ‘little buddies’ that he was on lock down now. He had told her over and over again that Deshanna knew that they were done. But, in real life, he was just ignoring her ass. That meant nothing to these simple bitches out here. The fact that she was in the hospital proved that fact.

She was going to tell him that he needed to send out a memo that his dick drop off days were over. Although she wasn’t concerned about him cheating on her, she knew there were gonna be a couple more bitter bitches falling out of the sky. She wasn’t necessarily okay with that fact, but she knew what she was getting into when they made things official again.

“Technically? What the hell is technically moving, Nell?” he asked.

Nell rolled her eyes because he knew damn well what she was talking about.

“I’m gonna have my mail forwarded, move most of my clothes, but I’m keeping my lease until it expires,” she told him.

“That’s a waste of money. You do know that, right? What the fuck you holding on to ya place for anyway?” he asked and paused for an answer. When he realized he wasn’t getting an answer, he let her know what his assumptions were. “Oh, you thinking a nigga still got a chick or two stashed in the cut. I’ll let you make it right now considering why you’re in here. Just make sure you hear me loud and clear, Lanelle,” he said and leaned over so his face was close to hers.

“When your lease is up, not only are you gonna be living with a nigga, but you will be planning a damn wedding. I told you when we went official that I wasn’t playing games with your ass. You might as well decide what size wedding you want. It doesn’t matter to me. It can be big, small, medium, we could even go to Vegas if you want. You think you’re slick hoping that some shits gonna pop off while you’re at my place. I keep telling you that you’re with a grown ass man now, sweet heart.” He kissed her on the cheek and sat down on his chair in the corner.

He wasn’t gonna tell her that the place they were going to was the one that only Murder and Pain knew about. She would complain that it would give him an unfair advantage, but it was what it was.

Nell was excited that Lawrynn had finally come back up to the hospital to see her. Hopefully, tonight would be the last night she had to spend there. Seeing her cousin with the marks from the chemical burns made her want
to kick Nikki’s ass. The way she saw it, Nikki was no longer her family.

Hearing Lawrynn laugh and play around made Nell thankful that Murder was turning out to be just the nigga that Lawrynn needed. They had lucked up when they got with these two.

“When I get out of here, we’re going to the club the first night,” Nell said then she stuck her tongue out like Cardi B while snapping her fingers. Lawrynn giggled while Allen looked at her like she was crazy. Murder just ignored the comment totally. “Look, Lawrynn, they sitting over there hot because we’re gonna go hang out. We’re deserving of a girl’s night, don’t you think?” she asked her cousin and snapped her fingers again.

“Keep playing with me, Nell,” Allen said in a calm tone.

“What? Just because we’re together doesn’t mean that I have to be around you twenty four seven, Allen,” she said and dragged his name out for about two minutes.

“You weren’t going out and shit like that before we got together, so don’t start doing that shit now. Ain’t no need for no new shit. Keep that same boring ass energy you had before I saw your ass again,” he told her, which caused her to roll her eyes.

“Allen, between the two of us, she was always going out. I can’t count how many times she forced me to go out with her. The night I met Murder, I was out because of her,” Lawrynn added in her two cents.

“This ain’t your argument,” Murder said and shot her a look that told her to shut her mouth.

Lawrynn rolled her eyes, but she damn sure kept her mouth closed.

“You’re not going to the club alone. I can be on one side of the club and you on the other, but you not going alone. You can even call her over to the house so y’all can play in make up or whatever. I’m gonna be in my man cave, so y’all can do whatever. Fuck all that girl’s night out or whatever you want to call it. Either way, you best believe I’m gonna be in the vicinity,” Allen told her.

“I understand you being overprotective and all that, but you can’t be with me all the time. I do have to do some things on my own, Allen,” Nell said.

“Yeah, you’re right, but going to the damn club ain’t one of them. Drop it, or I’ll call all the clubs in the Tidewater area to let them know not to let your ass in. You know I know people, so do you still want to plead your case?” he asked her.

She gave up, but not without giving him the middle finger first.

  Chapter Nine

Connie was headed to her office when she was stopped in her tracks by the vision of a not too happy Pain standing in the middle of the hallway. She paused her steps briefly then continued her stride.

“You just gonna walk past me like that, huh?” he asked.

“Since your baby mother or girlfriend contacted my supervisor to file a formal complaint against me, yes, I am,” she said.

Pain looked confused because he didn’t know anything about a complaint being filed. He had been at the hospital with Nikki day in and day out and was relieved that she was out of the hospital now. The more he thought about it, the angrier he got.

Nikki was pissed because she thought that being at Pain’s house while she’s on bed rest meant something. Pain just didn’t trust that she would do what she was supposed to do. He also didn’t want to take the risk of her doing something to herself or the baby to get his attention. When she realized that Pain had her set up in the guest bedroom and hired three nurses to come in to sit with her so she wouldn’t be alone, she was pissed.

“I didn’t know about any of that,” he told her.

“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know you didn’t know what she did. My question to you is, how is it that she’s doing all this evil shit, yet you just stand around like you don’t know what she’s capable of? The whole hospital knows about the cousin she almost permanently blinded. I just hope and pray that nobody kills her ass before the baby is born. This is why I was hesitant to even communicate with you in the first place. I’m sure you’re a really nice guy, but you need to get that bitch in order. The very next time she comes at me, these scrubs are coming off. Now move out of my way and don’t bring your ass back here looking for me,” Connie told him before heading in the direction of her office.

Pain watched her walk away until he couldn’t see her anymore. His next move was to his house, so he and Nikki could have a talk. He was tired of playing with her. It was bad enough that she was even acting like this and they weren’t together. For her to come at Connie because she saw her as a threat was the one thing that sent him over the edge. He jogged to his car once he got to the parking garage and pulled out his phone to call the nurse who was on duty.

  “Hello,” she answered.

  “Is she up?”

“Yes, she’s downstairs talking to her friends,” she revealed.

  “Friends, what fucking friends?”

“I don’t know, sir, but it’s two ladies. They look a little older than her. Do you want me to ask them to leave?” she asked.

“No, I’m on my way there. When I get there, you can leave for the rest of your shift,” Pain told her.

“Are you sure, sir? I don’t mind staying here,” she asked, hoping that he said he was sure because Nikki was plucking her last nerve. If she didn’t have kids to feed and a baby daddy who was locked up, she would cuss Nikki out so bad that she would probably go into labor.

“Yeah, you’re good. You’ll still get paid, so don’t worry about that,” Pain told her.

  “Thank you.”

“No problem. Don’t tell her I’m coming, and don’t make her so called friends leave either,” he told her before ending the call.

Pain knew the friends had to be her aunties, but there was no reason for them to come to his house when they all had phones. He hoped they weren’t over there plotting with her on some bullshit.

It only took fifteen minutes for Pain to make it to the house, and he was thankful that he didn’t see any cops anywhere along the way. He hopped out of the car and broke into a light jog to the door. Walking into the house, he fast stepped to the living room. Once he made himself known, all the ladies stopped talking.

“What up, y’all? What are y’all doing here? Ms. Laura, you didn’t come over here when I was dating your daughter, so why come now?” he asked.

“I can come check on my niece. Wherever she is, I know that I’m welcome,” she said.

“Nah, that’s not how it works,” he said. He was about to tell them all how he really felt, but the nurse appeared with her purse on her arm.

“Where the hell are you going?” Nikki asked her.

“I will see you tomorrow, sir,” the nurse to Pain.

“Fa sho,” he responded and gave her a head nod. He waited for the front door to close before he turned his attention to the women in the living room with him. “Which one of y’all old evil ass birds told her to call Connie’s supervisor and file a complaint. We all know she ain’t bright enough to think of the shit on her own,” Pain said to the three of them. “Don’t everybody speak at one time,” he added.

  “Who is Connie?” La-La asked.

“Connie is the doctor that Pain is leaving our niece high and dry for. He leaves her here all day with those nurses because he’s out entertaining her,” Laura spoke up.

“Is that what she told you?” Pain asked.

“What do you mean what I told her? It’s the truth. You leave early as hell and come back late. I know you’re out there in that bitch’s face,” Nikki said.

“Once again, you’re smack in the middle of some bullshit. Connie and I only communicate on the phone. Today, I decided to pop up on her, being that she works her ass off. It fucked my head up when she told me that you called her supervisor to file a complaint on her. If you have a problem with how I’m moving, then you take that shit up with me. Connie hasn’t done shit to you, and she was barely talking to me. You snuck in and fucked that all up for me. This time, you fucked ya self in the process. You’re only here because of the baby. Right now, you got me feeli
ng like even if the baby ain’t mine, I’m gonna take the motherfucker anyway. You don’t need to be teaching any child the twisted shit that’s in your head,” Pain told Nikki.

“You’ve never said anything about the baby not being yours before. Why bring it up now?” Laura asked.

“That’s a damn lie. I told her ass from jump that I wasn’t solid on the fact of the baby being mine. You wouldn’t know that because your ass don’t have shit to do with this in the first damn place. Why the hell are you so fucking concerned about Nikki? Your daughter needs you now, but you sitting over here plotting and shit with this lying bitch. Where the fuck do they do that shit at? You’ve got everybody looking at you sideways. You talk that shit about wanting to be there for family, but there’s something else going on,” Pain said.

The ladies exchanged looks but said nothing.

“You can’t sit here and throw out stuff like that. She’s my aunt, and she’s been here for me,” Nikki said.

“Says the biggest liar in the universe,” Pain said and chuckled. He stood to his feet and slid his hands in his pockets. “You two need to get the fuck out and don’t come back,” he said to Laura and La-La.

“I don’t know where they keep finding all these disrespectful niggas at. Nell’s daddy would’ve never talked to my aunties like this,” La-La said as she stood to get her purse and keys.

“I guess you need to go find that nigga, so he can co-sign the bullshit you’ve got going on,” Pain said to their backs as the ladies walked to the door.

“Talk that slick shit now. All y’all are gonna get what’s coming to y’all,” La-La said.

“Says the bitter bitch of the west,” Pain added as he opened the door for them.

Once they stepped outside, he immediately shut the door.

  “That was rude,” Nikki said.

“You just stay here because you’re pregnant. We’re not getting together ever in life. The next time you come at Connie, pregnant or not, I’m fucking you up. You keep thinking you can do whatever and catch no consequences. Keep trying me, and I’ll fuck you up and your senior citizen thot entourage,” Pain told her.
