“That’s my damn cue to go find a cigarette and learn to smoke. This shit sounds mad personal to my black ass. Sis, hit me up when y’all done talking about unknown kids and shit. Y’all gonna mess around and make my pressure go up. Niggas and flies always coming around with some shit,” La-La and walked out of the room after putting her purse on her shoulder.

She had one finger in the air, looking like a little old lady going to the bathroom during the preacher’s sermon on Sunday morning.

“We’re here to find out about Nikki, and that's all. I don't have to talk to any of you motherfuckers. Nikki is the one we’re concerned about. You know, my niece. La-La is family and ain’t none of y’all motherfuckers in here family, so as far as I'm concerned, y'all can get the fuck out," Laura said, trying to change the subject.

“I’d love to see your crazy ass try to put us out. Just because you come up here making all that noise don’t mean these people gonna listen to you. They’ve seen you act up every single time you bring your ass up here. Go ’head, be my guest and try to get us put out. I double dog dare your simple ass,” Pain said.

“You need to leave these boys alone. I need to talk to you anyway, so come talk to me in the hallway. It’s obvious you don’t want to talk in front of everybody. Just make sure you talk to me before I talk to Lawrynn. I don’t give a shit either way,” Kelvin said.

“Say whatever you have to say. I’m not going in no hallway for you to kidnap me. Do I look like a jackass to you?” she asked Kelvin.

“Yeah,” Pain and Murder said together.

  “You sure?” Kelvin asked.

“Nigga, say what you gotta say,” Laura said.

“Fine. Where’s Lanisha? Where is the daughter you tried to convince me was mine? The same damn daughter you told me that you sent with her father, so I would stay with your sneaky pussy ass,” Kelvin asked.

Laura looked around like a deer caught in the middle of the street with a car shining bright headlights heading straight for her. She looked at Murder, Uncle Jimmy, Ms. Ella, and Pain, and then rolled her eyes.

“Fuck you, Kelvin, and all that you stand for. I’m only gonna say this once, so pay close attention,” she said, walking up to him with her hands on her hips. “I. HAVE. ONE. DAUGHTER. NIGGA,” she yelled and then went and sat in a chair on the other side of the room.

Kelvin shook his head because it was crazy how she was gonna ride this lie out to the end. He looked at Uncle Jimmy and nodded.

“Make the call. If she doesn’t want her chance to tell the truth, then fuck her. I’m gonna speak my damn truth because there’s no telling what this bitch told my daughter about me. Murder, whenever you’re ready, I am too. I ain’t got time to keep bullshitting with her ass. Talking about fuck my feelings, I’m gonna fuck hers so damn good them shits gonna get knocked up with my big head ass twins,” Kelvin said.

Murder gave a head nod in return. The original plan was to keep him tucked away, but since Laura knew Kelvin was in town, there’s no reason why Lawrynn couldn’t know too.

“Hello, I’m Dr. Jacobs. I want to give you an update on your fiancée,” the doctor said as he came in and looked at Pain. Pain stood to his feet. “We unfortunately had to deliver the baby. When we did that, the child did not have a heartbeat. I’m sorry. We tried everything we could. As for your fiancée, we have her heavily sedated. She should come out of it sometime tomorrow. We have a psychiatrist coming to talk to her whenever she wakes up. I know this is a major blow to you both. Once we get her in a room, you can go back to see her. She may not be awake, but I know in situations like this, the family usually feels better when they see their loved one,” the doctor said before leaving.

“Damn, man, this is fucked up. Pain, man this shit is fucked up,” Murder said with his hand on Pain’s shoulder.

Pain continued to stand there with a faraway look in his eyes. Ms. Ella gave him a hug, but he just stood there with his arms at his side. Although Kelvin didn’t know any of these people, he still felt the sad vibe in the air. He shook his head because nobody should have to go through this. Granted, he didn’t know the full backstory, but even a blind man could see the anguish in Pain’s face.

  Chapter Sixteen

Laura hauled ass out of the room right behind the doctor. She couldn’t believe what the doctor had just said. Tears ran down her face as she walked out of the hospital.

“What’s going on, Laura?” La-La asked.

“She lost the baby, and they have her on medication that’s gonna have her sleeping at least until tomorrow,” Laura answered.

Her mind was going a mile a minute even though she looked calm. On the inside, she felt like her world was slowly coming to an end. It was going to be all her fault, for sure. She shouldn’t have been so stupid in her younger days. After all these years of ignoring all the shit that she did back then, how could it come back on her all at one time.

“What are you gonna do when he tells Lawrynn everything?” La-La asked.

Laura rolled her eyes and kissed her teeth.

“Like I would tell your ass anything else. What type of shit you been on? I thought we talked about this and we were in this together. How long have you been talking to him behind my back?” Laura asked.

“Since about two years after he left. I found him on Black Planet one day and got his phone number. He would ask about Lawrynn all the time, so I just started calling him and sending pictures of her and stuff. I didn’t see any harm in it. He just wanted to know about his daughter,” La-La said.

“I would never give anybody info on your damn daughter without you knowing about it. Let me find out you got a damn motive behind doing that shit. You forget I know all about your shit too, bitch. I bet you don’t think I’ll make a trip up to the damn jail and let Mike-Mike know some sit about you,” Laura told her sister. “I’ll be damned if I go down alone, so guess what? That means I’m bringing your ass with me,” Laura added.

“I don’t know what you think you know, but I don’t have shit to hide,” La-La said.

“If you say so,” Laura said and gave her sister an evil wink then laughed as she walked away.

Murder and Kelvin left the hospital about an hour after Pain got settled in the room with Nikki. When they left, Uncle Jimmy and Ms. Ella were still there. They were sitting outside the house now, and Murder had just killed the engine.

“Are you ready for this?” Murder asked.

“I’m nervous, but not in a bad way. I hope she didn’t pick up that evil trait from her mama,” Kelvin said with a nervous chuckle.

“Nah, she’s been through too much to be evil like her. Take it easy on her. She just got to the point where she doesn’t have to wear the glasses, but the doctor told her yesterday that she may have headaches off and on because her eyes may get strained. If she’s talking to you and she starts holding her head, that means her head is bothering her. She may or may not tell you or even me.

“Just giving you a heads up. If she goes off and starts cussing, just let her get it all out. I want her to be comfortable with you before you throw this sister shit on her. I do know that I want you to tell her before I propose. That way, she’ll know that I want her flaws and all,” Murder said.

“Damn, that’s deep as hell. But, if you hurt her, I’m coming for you,” Kelvin said seriously.

  “I’ll be waiting,” Murder answered.

They both got out of the car. Kelvin was sure to walk behind Murder. He was content knowing that Lawrynn was in good hands, and he could tell by how Murder carried himself that he would lay down his life for her.

Murder walked into the house and was greeted by the sound of loud Reggae music. Lawrynn came in the room dressed in Murder’s Norfolk State University t-shirt, which came to below her knees, with a pair of gold tights underneath. On her feet were some Norfolk State fuzzy house socks to finish off her outfit.

“Hey baby,” she said with a smile until she saw the man standing behind him.
/>   Lawrynn stood there looking at an older version of the picture that she had in her house, purse, and posted up on the dashboard of her car. She blinked her eyes a few times, thinking that maybe she was dreaming or just plain delusional.

  “Daddy?” she asked.

“Yeah, babygirl, it’s me. I… umm didn’t think you would remember me,” Kelvin said, standing still because his feet would not move.

“I did get to keep one of your pictures after you left. Mama thought she burned or cut them all up. I was young when you left, but I didn’t want to forget you, so I took one of the pictures and hid it in my room,” she revealed to him.

Hearing that made Kelvin smile. She could’ve only been about six or seven when he left, so how could she be that young and so smart?

“I need to explain to you why I’ve been gone for so long,” Kelvin started.

“No, you don’t. Like I said, when you left, Mama was running around the house like a crazy person crying and cursing. All the things that you left, she burned, sold, or cut up. Then, one day, out of nowhere, she told me that you were my imaginary friend. When I kept asking questions about you, she said that you were dead. I have a picture of you in my house and car, and she’s been in both and never acted like she saw it.

“The last time we talked about you, I think I was a freshman in high school. I asked about you, and she told me that you didn’t want us anymore. By that time, there were so many kids in my school whose fathers had walked out. I knew there was something else going on. We would all sit around talking about what crazy things our mothers told us about our fathers. The sad part is that she was too bitter to even allow me to form my own opinion of you. I felt like since you treated me so good when you were around, that if you did leave us then there had to be a reason why. I remember the times you would let me watch scary movies with you and then sleep in my room on the floor, so I would sleep in my own bed,” she said as she cried.

“Forgive me for staying away from you so long. I was a coward to stay away. Your mother being a bitch isn’t enough of a reason for me to stop all contact with you. If you allow me to, I will call you every day and come see you every chance I get from now on,” Kelvin said.

“I would love that. I’ve missed you so much. I think it’ll be nice having a sane parent for once,” Lawrynn said with a smile through the falling tears.

Kelvin was even crying. He expected Lawrynn to curse him, blame him, or even try to put him out. He never thought in all these years that she would react the way she just did.

“Thank you, babygirl. I love you. I always have,” Kelvin told her.

“I love you too, Daddy,” she told him just before they embraced.

Seeing them both crying and loving each other let Murder know he had done the right thing. This was one time he was okay that Lawrynn was crying because they were clearly tears of joy.

  Chapter Seventeen

Pain sat at Nikki’s bedside so angry that his face felt hot. Everyone had finally left. He was sitting in the dark staring at Nikki as she slept. How could someone be so damn evil? There was no way she should be doing this right now.

Pain watched the nurses come and go, but Nikki didn’t move. He leaned over and brushed her hair back with his hand.

“It’s rare to see a man who loves a woman like you love her,” the nurse said as she came in to check Nikki’s vital signs once again.

“You hear that, bitch? Wake your ass up so I can love your ass to death. You better hope and pray that you die before I get a chance to fucking kill you,” he whispered directly into her ear before giving her a kiss on the cheek, which caused the nurse to smile at him again.

“Don’t worry, she’ll wake up, and you’ll be able to have your way with her and love her all you want to. I just love young, black love. Love her deeply. The lord hasn’t kept her around this long for nothing. Appreciate and value the time that you both have left with each other. One day you’re here and they next day you’re gone. No one knows when their time is up,” she said before leaving the room.

Bitch, please, I know when this motherfucker’s time is gonna be up, Pain thought.

The door opened, and in walked La-La, but to Pain’s surprise, she was alone this time.

“Don’t tell me you’re by yourself?” he asked her. She didn’t say anything, but she was sure to roll her eyes. “Seeing you alone is like realizing that Ralph and Johnny really left New Edition. Some shit I never thought I would see, but I’m rooting for New Edition to get back together. You two, I couldn’t care less about,” Pain said.

“What the hell are you talking about? That’s my sister. We’re always gonna be together, even when we’re not together. She went to see Lawrynn, so I came to check on Nikki. Ain’t no harm in that,” she told him.

Pain knew that if Laura went to see Lawrynn, it was only because of her baby daddy popping back up after all these years. He knew some fireworks were going on wherever they were. He laughed at the thought of Murder and Kelvin beating Laura’s ass.

He saw that La-La was staring at him.

  “What?” he asked.

“What the hell you laughing at?”

“None of your fucking business. You’re here to check on her, not me.”

“Why are you even still here? You made it clear that you were only looking out because of the baby. Well, there’s no more baby, so why the fuck are you here?” she asked him.

“I need to make sure this bitch knows the error of her ways,” Pain said.

“What damn ways? You were helping her errors, if I remember completely. Don’t act like your house ain’t made of glass since you’re over here throwing stones and shit. Niggas get on my fucking nerves. Y’all the first ones to forget the fucked-up shit that y’all do. Oh shit, you can’t forget though, huh? You remember that shit every time you see Murder with her, don’t ya?” she said. Pain rolled his eyes. She was being the messy bitch that she’d always been. “Your ass is quiet now, I see,” she said and laughed.

Nikki started to wake up, getting both of their attention. La-La jumped up while Pain just sat there looking at her.

“Why are you just sitting there? Go get a nurse or at least press the call button,” she fussed as she rushed to Nikki’s side.

Pain casually picked up the call button and pressed it. He then put it back just as casually as he picked it up. The nurse came in with the doctor behind her.

“I see somebody’s up right on time. I was on my way to check on you when the nurse’s page went off. It’s great to see you awake. I know you’re somewhat sore and out of sorts. Other than that, how do you feel?” the doctor asked.

“My baby, where’s my baby?” she asked.

“I’m sorry. When you came in, the baby was in distress, and we had to deliver him by C-section. He was born without a heartbeat,” the doctor said.

Pain sat and watched Nikki interact with the doctor. When he told her about the loss of the baby, he could swear on a room of bibles that he saw a little smile. It was small, but he had fucking seen it. Then, just that quick, she turned her head to him with tears in her eyes.

“Are you fucking happy now? You never wanted me or my baby. The baby’s dead now, so you got your wish,” she said to him as La-La rushed to hold her in her arms.

Pain said nothing at all and showed no emotion at all for her little rant. He knew the show was just beginning.

“Please try to calm down. The last thing you need is for your blood pressure to spike,” the doctor said, trying to calm Nikki.

“I will not calm down until this murderer gets out of my room. Somebody call the police. He pushed me down the stairs. He made me lose my baby. It’s his fault that I’m here. Get him away from me. He might kill me next!” she yelled.

Pain sat still like he wasn’t being accused of killing a child. He took his phone out and sent Pauletta a text letting her know that he was about to be arrested for the murder of the unborn child and then he slid the phone back in his pocket. Pain did
n’t know what everybody was looking at him for. He didn’t do shit, and more importantly, he had proof. He wasn’t going to get in a shouting match with Nikki in front of these white people, knowing that the police were already on their way.

“You’re a fucking murderer. How could you take our baby away like that? You killed your own child. A fucking monster is what you are. I fucking hate you!” she screamed. This time she threw the pitcher of water at him.

Water flew everywhere, and Pain moved just in time. The pitcher landed on the floor in front of the chair he was sitting in.

“Sir, I’m gonna ask you to step out of the room. It’s obvious you sitting here is only going to upset her more. You don’t have to leave if you don’t want to. Just stand in the hallway or something. If she keeps going like this, she could make her condition worse than it already is,” the doctor said.

Pain slowly, extremely slowly, stood to his feet and left out the room. He knew it his slow movement would irritate Nikki and La-La, and that’s why he was sure to go as slow as he could. He leaned against the wall and waited for the police to come. When he saw them coming down the hallway, he met them before they could get to the door.

“I’m the one y’all were called about. Can y’all take me down to the station? My lawyer should already be there waiting for me to arrive,” he told them.

“Well, this is different. I’ll go and check on the person who called, and then we will make our next move,” one of the officers said.

Pain watched as the officer went into the room. He stayed in there for almost thirty minutes before coming back out.

“Sir, are you aware of what she’s accusing you of?” he asked.

“Yeah, I know what she said,” he simply answered.

“Did you do it?” the officer asked because he couldn’t resist the need to know.

“I’m not answering anything until we get to the precinct were my lawyer is,” Pain said.
