“Okay, buddy, have it your way,” the officer said before taking Pain by the arm and leading him out of the hospital.

Pain was quiet the entire ride to the precinct. The officers were trying to get him to talk by asking him basic questions. He knew how the police worked, though. Anything he said was going to be twisted and turned until they could find a way to use his own words against him. On the inside, Pain couldn’t wait until the tapes were shown to the cops and he turned the tables on Nikki.

Walking into the precinct, Pain smiled when he saw Pauletta waiting for him to arrive. She stood to her feet with a smile on her face.

“Did they touch you?” she asked Pain.

He shook his head from side to side. They allowed Pain to sit down in one of the closest chairs, so the officers could go get one of the available detectives on duty.

“Could you two please come with me?” a detective said.

Pauletta and Pain followed the detective to the empty interrogation room. Once the door was opened, they all took their seats. “Do you know what you’re being accused of right now?” the detective asked.

“It doesn’t matter what he’s being accused of. This live stream from his home proves that my client is not the one at fault. You can take it anywhere you’d like to get it examined to show there was no tampering or alterations done to it,” Pauletta said and slid her phone over to the detective.

“I haven’t even said anything. I’m mean, shit, I haven’t even told you my name,” he said with a smile.

“There’s no need for meaningless conversation or for us to exchange names at this point. My client will be released as soon as you stop bullshitting and watch the newsfeed. Look at that first and once I tell you our next move then and only then will I get your name,” Pauletta said with a serious look on her face.

The detective looked at the video on the phone then looked at Pain and Pauletta. After looking at it two more times, his mouth dropped open.

“Is it okay if I take this to our video guy for a few minutes?” he asked.

“Time is ticking. I told you that you could before you even looked at it. Do I have to get another detective in here?” Pauletta asked.

The detective jumped up and left the room.

“Why are you rushing them?” Pain asked.

“I have something waiting for me at home. I was enjoying a umm nice meal,” Pauletta said and smiled.

Pain shook his head. He knew that meant she was face deep in some pussy when he called. They sat there for almost an hour before the detective decided to come back in. He sat down and slid Pauletta her phone back while shaking his head.

“You’re free to go. She’ll be charged with making a false report as soon as I write up the paperwork,” the detective said.

“We also would like for her to be held and a complete psych evaluation done on her. It’s clear that something is wrong with her. She’s a danger to herself and the public. I’m sure you’ll agree,” Pauletta said as she and Pain stood to their feet. The detective allowed them to walk out When they got outside of the precinct, Pauletta looked at Pain and shook her head. “Go home and stay away from the hospital. I’m sure she’ll be informed of what’s going on by the morning, if it takes that long,” she told him.

“No problem for me. Thanks for all your help,” he said.

“Don’t get it twisted. I only do it because you pay me,” she said with a smile before walking away.

Pain ordered an Uber then waited so he could go home and finally relax in peace. Tomorrow morning, he was going to call Connie because they had some things to discuss.

  Chapter Eighteen

Murder went to open the door dressed in some basketball shorts and a t-shirt. He smirked when he saw Laura on the other side of the door. In the next second, he closed the door right in her face.

Lawrynn was in the kitchen cooking. She heard the door but was confused when she didn’t hear Murder talking or see anyone with him when he came back in the kitchen. She watched him walk to the fridge and get an individual bottle of orange juice, open it, and take a drink from it.

“Who was at the door?” she asked.

“Oh, ya mama,” he casually said and walked back to his man cave.

Lawrynn shook her head at him and walked to the door to see if her mother was still there.

“Come in, Ma. What brings you by?” Lawrynn asked, knowing that it had something to do with her father being back in town.

In all the action last night, she didn’t get a chance to ask Murder how he ended up with her father in the first place.

“I came to see how you were doing,” Laura answered.

“Ma, I don’t mean to be rude or offend you in any way, but I call bullshit. You haven’t been coming to see me the whole time I was recovering, and now, today of all days, you just happen to stop by. Why are you here, Ma?” she asked again, looking Laura in the eyes.

“Why are you looking at me like that? I told you why I’m here,” Laura said, trying to plead her case.

“Because I know I’m not the only reason for you not to be sitting in the hospital with your precious niece, Nikki. We all know that by now, so what’s the point of this visit? If you’re gonna keep lying, you can just keep that shit to yourself and get out. Life is too short to be playing games with my time,” Lawrynn said.

“It’s a damn shame. You’re even acting like his rude ass,” Laura said, shaking her head.

  “Goodbye, Mother,” Lawrynn said.

“Okay, okay. I guess by the way you’re acting, you know your father’s back in town,” Laura said.

“Yes, he came by yesterday,” Lawrynn answered. Laura began to look nervous, maybe even scared in Lawrynn’s opinion. “What else is going on? Why do you look so nervous?” she asked her mother.

“Because she has something she’s scared to tell you,” Kelvin said as he came around the corner. He was in the man cave with Murder trying to get to know his future son-in-law.

“How could you trick me like this? You said he came over here yesterday. You never said he was still here,” Laura complained.

“You just assumed he wasn’t here. Why are you so nervous, Ma?” Lawrynn asked again.

Kelvin stood behind Lawrynn and folded his arms across his chest. He was anxious to see what the hell was about to come out of Laura’s mouth. Laura stood there fidgeting and looking around.

“Tell her in the next five minutes, or I will,” Kelvin said, forcing her hand.

“You have a sister,” Laura blurted out.

“Ma, you’re doing all this because Daddy has other kids? Why are you so nervous? He’s been gone from us this long, I pretty much assumed he had other kids,” Lawrynn said.

“I don’t have any other kids, Lawrynn,” Kelvin said, looking at Laura.

Lawrynn looked around for a minute or two.

“Wait a minute. If you don’t have other kids, then that means,” she cut her own words off as she looked at her mother. Laura stood there, and for the first time, she actually shed tears in front of her daughter. “Where is she, Mommy?” Lawrynn asked.

“You have to understand that I was young. I thought if I did it that he would stay with me, but he left us anyway. I did it for him, I did it for love,” Laura said, crying and moving her hands all around.

Hearing all of the commotion, Murder finally came out of the man cave to make sure nothing happened to Lawrynn.

“Where is my sister, Mommy?” Lawrynn asked again.

“Please don’t hate me. I never thought things would turn out like this. I thought everything would be different,” Laura said.

“Stop fucking stalling and tell her who and where her fucking sister is!” Kelvin yelled. The vibration of his deep voice caused everyone to shake with fear, especially Laura.

“The hospital. Your sister is in the hospital,” Laura said.

Kelvin and Murder looked at each other, knowing exactly who she was talking about. Murder shook his head because it was exactly w
ho he thought it was. This shit was getting more and more ridiculous by the minute. Murder had lost what little respect he had for Laura just that quick. No, it wasn’t much, but at least before now, Lawrynn could’ve possibly convinced him to at least speak to her again. After this shit, there would be no speaking or anything coming from Murder. Even with him planning to marry her daughter, there would be no communication between him and his future mother-in-law.

“Why is she in the hospital? What’s wrong with her?” Lawrynn asked.

“Start fucking talking, Laura!” Kelvin said and stepped closer to her.

“I’m so sorry, baby. Please forgive me. I swear I didn’t know things would turn out like this. I promise you I didn’t,” Laura cried as best she could.

“Fine, Nikki’s not your cousin, she’s your sister. The sister that your mother cheated on me to make then tried to give away, thinking that would make me stay,” Kelvin said while still eyeballing Laura.

Laura released gut wrenching sobs as her daughter looked at her and tried to digest what was just said to her.

“Wait a minute. No, hold on. Nikki is my sister, as in my blood sister?” Lawrynn asked. The moment she asked that question, she felt Murder wrap his arms around her. She stepped out of his hold and away from everyone’s reach. “Is it true?” she asked her mother.

Laura continued to sob but shook her head up and down.

“Lawrynn, calm down,” Murder said as he watched her bite her bottom lip.

“All this time you knew and never said anything. You still stayed quiet after she attacked me. Even when she slept with my boyfriend and slept with everybody’s man. You didn’t say one damn word. Does she know?” Lawrynn asked. Laura shook her head from side to side. Lawrynn walked over to her mother and slapped the shit out of her. HOW FUCKING COULD YOU DO THIS TO US? NOT JUST ME, YOU DID THIS TO ALL OF US. DON’T TRY TO PUT THIS ON ANYBODY ELSE EITHER. YOU AND YOUR FUCKING SECRETS. WAS IT WORTH IT?” Lawrynn asked while screaming her head off.

“All he had to do was stay. If he would’ve stayed, everything would be alright. He wasn’t supposed to leave,” Laura cried out.

“Don’t put this shit on me. If you wouldn’t have fucked my best friend, I would’ve stayed. I loved you so much that I had to leave town and not come back. That’s how bad you fucking hurt me,” Kelvin said.

“I can’t believe you did this. That’s why you were treating her like she was your daughter; because she really is. This shit is fucking crazy. How the hell is this supposed to work? Sister or not, I hate her ass. She’s tried to make my life a living hell for as long as I can remember. My sister is a big ass hoe,”: Lawrynn said.

Before she knew what was happening, she felt Laura’s hand against her cheek. Once she felt the slap from her mother, it was as if time stood still. In a blink of an eye, Lawrynn’s father had lifted her mother off the ground by her neck.

“If you ever in your fucking life put a damn hand on my daughter again, I will fucking kill you. Do you fucking hear me? I don’t give a shit if you did bring her in this world. Don’t you ever put your hands on her again, you grimy bitch,” he said directly in her face. He was in such a rage that spit flew everywhere as he spoke.

Lawrynn didn’t want her parents to fight, even if her mother was dead ass wrong. She walked over to where her father was and placed her hand on his shoulder.

“Daddy, let her go. She can’t walk out of my house and my life if she’s dead,” Lawrynn told Kelvin.

He let Laura go, and she fell to the floor coughing and holding her throat. Lawrynn knew she should care that her mother had almost died at the hands of her father, but she didn’t. Looking down at her mother, she felt nothing at all. This is the point I’ve always wondered about. The point where I just don’t give a fuck anymore. The point where I’m numb to every fucking thing that’s supposed to break me, she thought. “Get up and get the fuck out,” Lawrynn told Laura and walked away.

  Chapter Nineteen

Laura swiftly walked out of the house, stumbling along the way. She couldn’t believe the way Lawrynn had talked to her or that Kelvin had put his hands on her. Nobody tried to stop him or help her. Lawrynn was supposed to be her daughter, and she didn’t even care that she was losing oxygen right before her eyes.

Laura pulled her phone out and called her sister.

“Girl, I gotta tell you something. Are you coming up here now or later?” La-La asked as soon as she answered the phone.

“I told her, La. Lawrynn finally knows the truth,” Laura cried.

“How did that turn out?” La-La asked.

“She cussed me out and watched as Kelvin’s ass choked the life out of me,” Laura said.

“That nigga choked you? For what?” La-La asked.

“Because, I got tired of her talking to me like I’m just some bitch, so I slapped the shit out of her ass,” Laura answered.

  “Are you crying?” La-La asked.

“What the hell do you think, Laura? One daughter hates me while the other doesn’t even know I’m her mother. Don’t forget one has it out for the other one along with being a hoe. My baby daddy just came back from wherever the fuck he was. Hell fucking yeah, I’m crying,” Laura said sarcastically.

“Don’t get all in your feelings with me. You’re the one who put all this shit in motion when you started fucking around with Polo. I told you not to do that, just like I told you not to give Nikki away. Once that trust is broken, nothing can fix a relationship. You should’ve told that girl who she was and took her back years ago,” La-La nagged.

“Oh, so your ass must be perfect this week, huh? Your ass is just as sneaky as my black ass. Stop trying to play that sweet, sweet roll. You keep playing with me, and I’m gonna pull your fucking card too. Your black ass will be crying right next to me. We’re fucking sisters, and we’re just alike. It’s in the blood,” Laura said.

“You sound dumb as hell. Nikki and Lawrynn are sisters, and they damn sure don’t act alike. I don’t know, though, after Murder finishes turning Lawrynn out with that thug nigga dick, she might end up hiding a damn kid just like her mama.” La-La laughed.

“I don’t find that shit funny. You knew my reason for giving her away like I did,” Laura said.

“Yeah, I know what you said the reason was. I’ve got one question, though. If that was the reason, why didn’t you go get Nikki back when he left anyway?” La-La asked.

“Every time I saw her, she reminded me of what I did. I couldn’t take it, so I did what I had to do,” Laura explained.

“Still sounds like bullshit to me. I would’ve raised my damn kid. Maybe, if you had gone back for her then maybe she wouldn’t be the hoe she is now,” La-La said in a judgmental tone.

“When’s the last time you talked to Mike-Mike?” Laura asked.

She was tired of La-La acting like her shit was golden when she was just as flawed, if not more.

“Why the hell you keep bringing him up? His ass is in jail just like he was yesterday,” La-La said.

“I thought he was appealing his sentence,” Laura said.

She knew what her sister had done. La-La thought she was so fucking smart, but Laura was about to put he know it all sister on the spot. Truth be told, Laura was still pissed at the fact that La-La had been in constant communication with Kelvin. She felt betrayed by most of her family, so now it was time to start striking back. La-La was at the top of the list.

Laura knew she had to be careful with how she told Nikki that she was her daughter. She had suspected that Nikki was susceptible to having a mental breakdown of some type. The more time she spent with Nikki, the more she saw how vulnerable she really was. Every night she prayed for both of her girls. Lawrynn may hate her and Nikki may not know her as her mother, but she most definitely prayed for both of them like a mother should.

“He is, as far as I know. Anyway, I think you need to come down here to see about Nikki. She finally woke up, which is good and all that. The thing is, she told the people that
Pain pushed her down the stairs. Me personally, I think she’s lying. I don’t know how she got down them stairs, but I doubt Pain pushed her. Something don’t seem right with her. I’ve been calling Nell, but she’s not answering. I’m gonna have to do another pop up,” La-La said.

“You can’t keep popping up at Allen’s house like that. He’s gonna get tired of your messy ass and make Nell not fuck with you anymore. Mark my words, you’re gonna feel it sooner or later,” Laura said.

“Says the bitch who’s hiding kids and shit. You can’t advise me on shit in life,” La-La said.

  “Fuck you,” Laura told her.

“Nah, I’m good, love, enjoy. You wanting to fuck two best friends is the reason why you’re looking crazy, crying and shit in the car,” La-La said and laughed. Laura was tired of La-La and her fucking jokes. She had something for that ass, though. It was time to put her dear sister in her place.

Laura didn’t even bother to tell La-La goodbye. She just ended the call so she could make the second most important call of her life.

“Scott Taylor, attorney at law,” the man answered the phone.

“Are you the attorney for Michael Aries?” Laura asked.

“Yes, I am. How can I help you?” he asked.

“I think I have some information that will help him get released way before he’s due,” she told him.

Scott Taylor sat up in his seat. He had been working on the Aries case for months. You didn’t have to have a law degree to know that Michael was framed and targeted by the overly eager detectives of the Norfolk police. The hard part was having conclusive proof that the frame even took place. Scott being the up and coming defense attorney in the area, he wasn’t going to give up on the case, no matter how long it took to prove what he already knew.

“What kind of information is it?” he asked.

“I don’t want to discuss it on the phone. When is the earliest time I can come to your office?” Laura asked.

“I’m in the office now. You have my attention, so if you can make your way here now, I won’t leave until I talk to you about whatever this evidence is that you think you have,” Scott told Laura.
