"No, thanks, everything’s fine. I'll call you later, Caterina." He slips his cell phone into his pocket and leaves.

I wait until he's out of earshot then pound my fists on my dark mahogany desk. "Grrr! I hate him!"

"He's an idiot, don't take it to heart." Alessandro smiles and pats my shoulder affectionately.

I don't know what I would have done in the past two years if it wasn't for him. He's been more than just a colleague, he's been a good friend, my only friend, really. He's the only one who knows what I've been through, and not because I confided in him, but because he's the kind of person who looks at you and in ten seconds knows exactly what you're like and how you're feeling and always finds the right words to help.

"By the way, I got my degree last month, too, the same as Leonardo, so why does he get called 'Mister' when I don't even get called Caterina?" It’s the first stupid thing that comes into my head, anything to change the subject.

"Because you're my employee and I can call you what I want and you, 'Ms-I-got-my-degree-just-last-month' can't do a thing about it!" I roll my eyes and he ruffles my hair. "I like your hair this short. It gives you a rebellious air. Is there something I should know?"

"What?" I ask defensively. Is he keeping track of my emails and the websites I visit during working hours?

"You know what they say. When a woman changes her hair so drastically it means big changes are on their way." He looks at me carefully, making me feel uncomfortable.

"We'll see," I reply, trying to be vague, focusing on my work again.
