  “Thanks,”’ she heard him reply.

She slowly made her way to the kitchen and cut a generous roll of the paper towel. She then wet the towel and cleaned up before she walked back to the couch. She sat down and pulled a blanket over her.

It seemed like forever before Vasili came back to the living room. She grabbed the bottle of wine she had put on the table and poured him a glass of wine and then poured herself one.

“You figured I needed some liquid courage, huh?” he said and she smiled.

“Talk to me,” she said as she took his hand and pulled him down on the couch. She looked into his eyes and smiled. “I would not push this much if I didn’t want to know.”

He flashed down the contents of his glass and she raised an eyebrow.

“I’m sorry about Glasgow,” he started.

“Yeah, what was that about?” She looked at him.

“I can’t tell you what that was about before I tell you my life story,” he said.

  “Okay,” she started.

“My name is not really Vasili Zakharov…I mean, it is Vasili. Legally…I changed it legally that’s what I mean…” he sighed and she took his hand in hers.

“Just go slow,” she said. “I am not in any hurry. We have all the time in the world.”

Vasili forced a smile and nodded.

“My name is not really Vasili Zakharov,” he said again.

“You already said that,” she said in a whisper.

“My real name….my real name is Kostya. Kostya Utkin,” he went on. “I was born in Russia, a little village. It was nice…normal but when I was twelve I moved to Moscow because my mother died and my father worked in the city…” he sighed again. “Long story short, I ended up working at this restaurant and the boss really took a liking to me. When I graduated, he gave me a job at his company and the job evolved when he inducted me into his real business.”

“Were you in the Russian mafia or something?” she asked, smiling.

He looked at her and shrugged. There was no simple answer to her question. All he knew was that he wanted to get it out of his system. His lips parted and he tried talking but all he could manage was just exhale.

“Oh my God,” Malia said in a whisper.

“Yeah,” he said when he finally found his voice.

“So, did you like kill people or something?” she asked and he nodded hesitantly.

“I was an enforcer and a cleaner which is just a polite way of saying that I used to make problems go away.”

“And do you still do that?” Malia asked pulling her hand away. He could tell by the tone in her voice that she was suddenly scared. He shook his head.

“No, of course not,” he said. “I got out of that life. That is why I relocated.”

  “How many years?”

  “What?”

“How many years has it been since you…you know…worked.”

“Six years,” he said in a soft voice.

“Okay…” she said as she pulled the blanket up to her chest and held it tightly.

“The last job I did, I stepped on some toes…I was supposed to take out a rival boss and when I did there was a girl there. A child, twelve years and they were talking about an auction of girls…”

“A sex trafficking ring?” she asked cutting him short and he nodded.

“My boss wanted to divide Mikh-…the dead mob boss’ businesses among other mob bosses and that meant that the sex trafficking ring had been promised to someone but Malia, I couldn’t do it. They were kids…I don’t think any of them were older than seventeen. They didn’t deserve it, so I took the girl and I didn’t know where the auction was going to happen…” he ran his fingers through his hair. “I tried talking to my boss about it but he didn’t care so I did the one thing people in that business are never supposed to do.”

  “What? What did you do?”

“I called the cops on them…I couldn’t do anything on my own but all I had to do was give them the details of the one kidnapping I knew and let them connect the dots with other kidnappings around Europe,” he said.

“But that is still so vague,” she said.

“I know,” he said nodding. “I also told them to check if there were any notifications of private flights coming into the country...it was a long shot but somehow it worked.”

“I remember a scandal a few years ago…a whole lot of billionaires were caught up in a human trafficking scandal but only one of them was ever implicated,” she said and he nodded.

“Yeah, they needed a fall guy,” he said.

“So…that was you?” she asked and he nodded again.

“Listen, Malia…I am not proud of the life I lived but I walked away. I had to…it was all too dark. Besides, that was the only way I could make sure Ashley was safe,” he said and she raised an eyebrow.

  “Ashley?” she asked. “Who’s Ashley?”

“The twelve year old girl I found,” he said. “I couldn’t take her back home because…the mafia massacred her parents and she had seen too much. She knew too much…she was going to die if I let her go so I took her in, gave her a new identity and moved with her to South Africa.”

  “So, you have a kid?”

“Kind of…I’m her guardian and it is the hardest thing I have had to do. After having to bury my girlfriend eight years ago.”

“Your girlfriend…did the mafia…” Malia started and he nodded.

“Dominika,” he said in a soft voice. “She was the only person I loved who knew what my life really was but there was a turf war and she was caught in the cross fire of some shit that she didn’t even…” he sighed loudly. “I swore I would never again put a person I loved in danger and that is why I have lived my life without any kind of commitment but with you, it was a different story. I am in love with you and…” his voice trailed off. There was a long silence as the two sat there, looking into each other’s eyes.

“So, yesterday when you told me that we had to get out of Glasgow,” Malia pointed out as she pulled her knees up and hugged them.

“I don’t know how my former boss…Pyotr Ivanovich, that’s his name…I don’t know how he knew but somehow he knew I was in Glasgow. That I was with you,” he explained.

“What do you mean? How?” she asked and he shook his head.

“I don’t know…he called the hotel. Our suite,” he said in a soft voice. “He asked for a meeting and when I got there he threatened you...I had to make sure we got out of there.”

Malia exhaled loudly and threw her head back.

“I know it’s a lot to take in,” he said and she looked at him.

“No shit,” she said in a soft voice.

He looked at her as she reached for the bottle of wine and began taking big gulps. He wanted to say something. Anything. But he just couldn’t. He was tongue tied.

She took another long gulp before she got up from the couch and looked at him briefly before she walked out of the living room. She made her way to the master bedroom and got a t-shirt from her bag. She pulled on a pair of panties and a long t-shirt before she held her hair up. The words Vasili had told her were still fresh in her mind. She kept hearing them over and over again. And she knew she had to make her peace with the situation but it felt hard, near impossible. Especially considering what she felt for him. It had only been a few weeks but she could feel herself falling for him, over and over, more and more each day. A tear rolled down her cheek.

“You are in love with a murderer…a criminal…someone worse than Mark,” she thought as she sat on the edge of the bed. But there was another voice in her head telling her that everything he had told her, everything he used to be was all in the past. She was still seated on the edge of the bed when Vasili walked into the room.

“Hey,” he said, standing at the doorway, leaning against the door frame. “I just came to check up on you,” he said as he crossed his arms over his chest.

“I just needed a few minutes to myself,” Malia said.

&n
bsp; “You’ve been up here for two hours,” Vasili pointed out and she sighed. “I know…I know. It’s not like I just told you that you hit the boyfriend jackpot or something.”

“I guess not,” she said as she looked up at him. “I’m sorry…I just didn’t know how to react or what to say…”

“It’s alright. I understand.” He walked over to where she was. “It’s not like I just told you I have a kid and I used to kill people.”

She forced a smile and then laughed.

“Yeah, it was nothing that big.”

He sat down next to her and looked into her eyes for a long second.

“Can I ask something?” she asked and he shrugged.

  “Shoot.”

“I’ve seen how you live and your clothes and security…we are practically in the same circles. But I don’t know what you do,” she said.

“People like us, people in that kind of life always need an exit plan. Some cash stashed away, a few passports and everything,” he started. “I had been building my nest egg for a while and after I did one big job I knew that it was time to plan what kind of future I would have.”

“How did you do that?” she asked.

“I left Moscow with a little over three million dollars and thankfully life is a little cheaper in Africa than America or some parts of Europe and I slowly grew my investments, started a real estate business and grew that…now I just chill out,” he explained. “Matter of fact, before I got Pyotr’s call I was considering getting you to manage a few of my funds given that you have such a great track record and everything.”

  She smiled.

  “I’m scared too, you know.”

“Of me?” he asked and she shook her head.

“Scared of the fact that I am falling in love.”

  “What’s so scary about that?”

“Well, I have not been the luckiest when it comes to love,” she said. “I just don’t want to mess anything up.”

“Nothing is going to get messed up,” he said. “I love you. You love me. That’s all that matters.”

“Is anyone coming after you?” she asked and he shook his head.

“As long as I am not in Russia, some parts of the States or some parts of the UK.” He reached for her hand and raised it to his lips. “We are fine.”

She bit her lip and he exhaled loudly.

“Don’t do that…you know what it does to me,” he said in a whisper. “Look, I know this changes everything,” he said and she shook her head.

“Not everything. We can just keep doing what we’re doing and keep away from certain areas of the States or the UK,” she said smiling and he nodded.

“I guess,” he said. “And I don’t want to move too fast or anything but I would really love for you to meet Ashley.”

  “Where is she?” she asked.

“She is in a boarding school in Pretoria. But she should be home in a few weeks…I guess three,” he said.

“Think she will like me?” Malia asked and he laughed.

“I told her I am seeing someone and she was ecstatic. She will love you,” he said in a soft voice. “And she is kind of an overachiever so a powerful woman like you is right up her alley.”

She laughed and gently rested her head on his shoulder.

“We are going to be okay,” he said. “I am going to make sure of it.”

She closed her eyes and exhaled slowly. This was one reality that’s she was going to have to learn how to live with and soon. But so far, she was fine with it.
