If I didn’t know better, I thought I heard Tobi say my name. How cruel is it for my own ears to play a joke like that?

I lounge on my bed, take a bite of my burger, and continue staring across my room. Eating lunch in my room is standard these days. Besides the fact I can avoid any sorority girls in the dining hall, it gives me more time to study.
My phone buzzes on the bed next to me with a message. I glance down and see Cam’s name and I tap the screen.
Cam: Look at this.
He sends me a picture of Regan sitting outside on the grass behind some bushes next to the high school gym. Her hair’s in a ponytail. It looks like she didn’t even brush it this morning. I can’t see her face, but her body is hunkered over like a wounded puppy.
What’s going on with her? I want to hold her in my arms and tell her everything will be okay, but she doesn’t want me to. She doesn’t want me.
I wipe my hands on my jeans and pick up the phone to respond.
Me: Who took this?
Cam: I did. Just now. She doesn’t know. She’s bad today. Worse than Friday. I didn’t think that was possible.
Me: She’s killing me.
Cam: She gave Tobi her iPod back. She won’t look at anyone. She’s on the verge of crying all the time.
Me: She didn’t say anything? What about lunch? She’s not eating with you guys?
Cam: I told you before she quit coming to lunch. She’s been all by herself. This is where she goes for lunch now.
Me: Outside in the cold? What do Tobi and Haylee say about it?
Cam: Thanks to your dumb ass they’re coming out to see her.
Me: ???
Cam: Yeah. I had enough of their BS and told them off over the weekend. Regan’s not even doing her schoolwork or taking tests.
Me: What!?!
Cam: Yeah. But because of your idiocy, two good things are happening.
Cam: The girls are going to make up and I get a shot with Regan.
Me: ha ha.
Cam: I’m going to sit with her today. I care about her and I’m here right now. If it’s over between you two, I want to be here for her all the time.
Cam: She doesn’t have to worry about girls hanging all over me…I’m not a band chick magnet
