Chasing Yesterday

“Ice cream, Momma?” Summer asked.
“Okay, but I want you in my sight at all times. Jessie, your name is Jessie?”
“Okay.” Travis said. “You can trust me, I’m a Sheriff.”
Jessie stood up but still held her stomach. She wiped her mouth with her sleeve. “We were lovers, you and I. Jesus Christ, Heather, you have a child?”
Heather was confused more now than ever. “The police officer who saved my life was a kind man. He helped me after the accident and I thought that we had something between us. It lasted a week before I realised that being with him was wrong. Summer is the result of that. I love her so much.”
“And her father, where is he now?”
“We’re still friends. He’s married now with a two-year old son. You said that we were lovers?”
“Yes. You broke my heart when you left, I don’t even think that the argument we had was worth leaving me for.”
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry if I hurt you but I don’t remember anything. I need to know about us, everything and anything. I need you to tell me everything. Can you do that?”
“Yes I can. Your daughter, she’s beautiful.”
“Yes she is. Right now, she’s all I’ve got.”
Jessie smiled at Heather. “Not anymore, Heather. This could take some time and I have plenty of that, if you do?”
Heather gazed at Jessie. “There is something about you that’s very familiar. I feel like I already know you.”
Jessie gave a half-smile. “I think that’s a good start, don’t you?”
Summer, with an ice cream in her hand, skipped back to her mother. “Momma, the nice man bought me an ice cream.”
Heather crouched down to her daughter’s level. “Summer, honey, this is Jessie. I think we’re going to be seeing a lot of her in the future.” She looked up at Jessie and winked.
Jessie’s heart pounded hard. Clearing her throat, she said, “Your mother and I have a lot of catching up to do. Summer, what a nice name. I have a horse named Summer. Perhaps you and mommy could come and visit me and you could have your own pony to ride.” She found it hard to speak, as a lump in her throat was making it hard for her to continue.
“Where is that? Where do you live, Jessie?”
“A small town called Hope. There’s not much to do there, but it sure is a hell of a place to live.”
Travis chuckled quietly to himself by the way Jessie had re-worded her hatred for the town.
Heather stood up. With Summer holding her one hand, she reached out with her other hand and looped it through Jessie’s arm. “I have a feeling that we’re going to like Hope.”
“I do too,” Jessie replied…
