He holds me before rolling onto his back next to me. He laughs a little, our sides pressed together.

“I needed that,” he says finally.

“Yeah, me too,” I admit. “Been a hard month.”

“I know,” he says quietly. “I’m sorry about that.”

I feel him nudge up against me tighter. I look over at him and feel the urge to tell him the truth.

Instead, something else comes out. “Did you mean what you said earlier?”

He raises an eyebrow. “Which part?”

“About me being the best in the class.”

“Every word,” he whispers. “By far.”

I chew on my lip for a second before nodding. “Okay. I can do it then.”

He chuckles. “If I hadn’t said that, were you gonna quit?”

“Probably not,” I admit. “But it helps.”

He laughs softly and I know I’m a total coward. I’m more interested in him complimenting me than in telling him the truth, but I can’t do it. I can’t ruin this moment.

He needs to know, and he’s going to. But right now, for the first time in a month, I feel good. I feel happy. And I can’t waste it.

I don’t know when I’ll get to feel like this again. So I’m going to savor every single second with him.

With my doctor, my baby’s daddy.

  Gavin

I see a change in Melody almost instantly.

The next morning, she’s like a new person. I left her apartment not long after we finished fucking, since we both had to be in early, so I didn’t see the change until now.

But it’s obvious. Everyone else is still a dead-eyed zombie, like they should be. This is probably the hardest they’ve ever worked. Hell, I’m even feeling it, and it’s not nearly as bad on me as it is on them.

But she looks clear for the first time in a month. She’s even smiling a little bit, answering my questions with a grin.

I have to admit, I like it. I like seeing this confident Melody, this happy Melody.

But I can’t let it stand, not for too long.

See, here’s the thing in medicine. You go through your days seeing the same old shit over and over again, the high blood pressure, the arthritis, the boring stuff that can be solved with a better diet and way more exercise. That’s the vast majority of medicine.

But suddenly, something new happens, something unexpected. You get a result you’re not sure about, or a symptom that seems just a little bit off.

And it’s easy to ignore. I mean, the vast majority of times it’s nothing, just a blip on the radar, nothing to worry about. But sometimes, it’s real, deadly real, and if you miss it…

If you let up on your concentration…

Someone died, just because you made a mistake.

So I love that Melody’s in a good mood. I love that she’s happy.

But I can’t let it distract from why we’re here, or else she’ll let herself and her patients down.

“Melody,” I snap right around lunchtime. The other interns are shuffling off, barely talking to each other in anything more than grunts and groans. “Come see me.”

  She smiles. “Okay, doctor.”

I nod and lead her away from the herd of zombies. They groan and shuffle on toward the cafeteria, only feeding on their minds right now.

Melody follows me. I bring her into an empty call room and gesture for her to sit on the bed.

“You’re in a good mood today,” I say.

She shrugs a little, leaning back. She’s wearing scrubs, the cute tops and bottoms completely gone now, forgotten in the crushing rush of real work. But beneath those scrubs, I know she has a tight little body, a delicious slick pussy, perfect perky tits, and an ass that makes my cock hard just thinking of it.

“Guess I needed a little stress release,” she says casually.

I grunt a little, nodding. “I’m sure you did. But you fucked up earlier, and now you’re going to have to explain it.”

She arches an eyebrow. “Excuse me?”

“In Mrs. Williams’ room. You fucked up. Remember why?”

I watch her thinking back. It was a short visit, barely two minutes long, and totally routine. I let her run points, just observing, everyone else outside in the hall. I watched her carefully, noting everything she did.

“I… don’t know,” she says finally. “It was nothing. I did everything right.”

I smirk and step closer. I lean down to look her in the eye. “Just because you’re good doesn’t mean you’re perfect.”

I stand up straight and slowly pull down my scrubs. Her eyes go wide as I take my half-hard cock in my hard.

“What are you doing?” she asks.

“Open that pretty mouth,” I say softly.

  “Excuse me?”

“You fucked up. Now you’re sucking my cock as punishment.”

Her eyes go wide. She glances at the door. “Gavin, someone could come in,” she says softly.

I chuckle. “So the fuck what? They’ll see you with my cock halfway down your throat. Now you’d better get to work if you want to have a real fucking lunch.”

She bites her lip. “Tell me what I did wrong,” she says.

“After you’ve swallowed my cum and not a second before.”

She glares at me. I love the anger in her, but fucking hell, I want this. I fucking need this.

  And she needs it too.

“Fuck,” she whispers, taking my cock by the base and licking me root to tip. I groan as she takes it between her lips.

She sucks my cock hard and fast. She’s pissed at me but she’s not the kind to do anything halfway. I groan, pushing her down, loving the way she gags on it. She’s sloppy and sucks me faster and faster, working my shaft.

“You’re fucking sexy,” I growl at her. “You’re talented. You’re smart. But you’re not fucking perfect.”

She pulls back, gasping, and strokes me. “I never said I was,” she glares back.

“Don’t talk back to me, you filthy girl,” I growl at her.

She gets back to work, sucking my cock. I groan, letting it slide down her throat, pushing her down, grabbing her hair. She sucks me faster, both hands on my shaft now, working it with her tongue and lips, moving up and down.

I love the sound of my cock leaving her mouth, of her saliva rolling down my shaft, her hands working my skin. I fucking love the way it feels as I push deep into her throat. She gags and sucks faster again, getting into it. She spreads her legs and I watch her put one hand down between her legs.

“You’re slick right now, aren’t you?” I whisper. “You’re soaking wet.”

“Yes,” she gasps, and I can see her hand working on her pussy. “I’m wet.”

“You’re soaking wet, you filthy fucking girl. Look at you, just from sucking my cock, you’re soaked. You can’t help yourself, can you?”

“No,” she moans, sucking me again, hand working faster. Her whole body’s shaking now with pleasure and desire and it’s the fucking sexiest thing I’ve ever seen.

She works her pussy and sucks my cock. I push her dep and she groans. “You’re fucking sexy as hell, girl,” I growl at her. “I want you to come with this cock between your lips.”

She moans with my dick in her mouth and sucks me faster. Her hand’s rubbing her clit even faster now, her hips getting into it. I let her slow down on my cock to concentrate on her pussy and I just enjoy the fucking show.

It doesn’t take long for her. She takes my cock into her mouth as she comes. I watch her body shake, her eyes roll back. I push my cock deeper into her mouth and she moans with it between her lips, nearly gagging as it slides into her throat.

She pulls back suddenly, gasping for breath, finishing her orgasm. But I’m not being kind to her right now. I make her get back to work and she does so eagerly. She sucks me faster now, both hands working my shaft, her lips moving up and down on my tip.

Fuck, it feels good, and I know I can’t last l
ong, not after watching her come with my dick in her mouth. I growl and grab her hair and push her down deep just as it reaches its peak.

I shoot my cum deep into her mouth, down her throat. She doesn’t hesitate, she licks it all up, swallowing every single drop. When she’s finished, she licks me clean with a satisfied smile.

I growl and kiss her, low and slow. “Not perfect, but as close as it gets,” I whisper.

She smiles up at me, clearly satisfied. “Okay then. What did I do wrong?”

I get myself back together and turn to the door. As I’m about to leave, I look over my shoulder. “You didn’t sanitize your hands after,” I say.

  She blinks. “I didn’t?”

“No. You didn’t.” I smirk at her. “Even the basics are important.”

I can see anger in her eyes but I don’t stay. I don’t need to hear her argue.

Fucking hell, that girl’s trouble. I’m slipping up again, just after one taste. But shit, I can’t control myself. She’s so tasty, so fucking delicious, so fucking sexy. I need another taste and I know I’m going to get one soon, whether it’s a good idea or not.

  Melody

For the rest of that week, I jump from thinking Gavin is the sexiest man I’ve ever seen to thinking he’s the biggest asshole in the world.

Well, he’s probably both, if I’m honest with myself. There’s something about his brash, rude confidence that draws me in, but also pushes me away. And every time I think I might want to try and go for more, to maybe ask him on a date or something stupid like that, I remember the secret that I’ve been carrying around with me everywhere I go.

It’s not impossible to imagine myself pregnant. I mean, I’ve been doing it my whole life. I’ve always known that I want to have a baby someday, I just never knew that this was going to be that day. I figured I’d be happily married, in a stable hospital position, or maybe even in private practice. I figured I’d be dating the father, at the very least.

Instead, I’m pregnant during the hardest year of my life and my freaking teacher knocked me up.

God, it’s an impossible situation, and Gavin doesn’t make it any easier.

“He’s in a mood,” Tracy whispers to me one afternoon, just a couple weeks after finding out about the baby.

  “Really?” I ask her, frowning.

“Yeah. Ripped into Thomas for something stupid like ten minutes ago.”

“What’d he do?” I took the morning off to go get my first prenatal checkup at a hospital about a half hour away, so I’m out of the loop right now. Of course, I told Gavin that I had to do something for my mother, since I couldn’t exactly tell him the truth.

“Nothing,” Tracy says, her eyes wide. “I mean, he answered a question wrong, and then he had trouble finding a vein on a patient. But it seriously was nothing.”

  “And Gavin flipped?”

She nods. “Just flipped. Ripped into him. It was…” She trails off, shaking her head.

I bite my lip, a knot in my stomach. Gavin’s in a patient’s room and he left the group outside to wait for him, something he does a lot when we’d only get in the way.

When he finally comes out, I can instantly see the mood etched all over his face. He looks sour, annoyed, and he doesn’t even look me over twice before flicking his head wordlessly. The group follows him down the hall.

“Melody,” he snaps. “The anterior landmark denoting the level of the plane between the superior and inferior mediastinum is the what?”

I clear my throat. “The sternal angle,” I say.

He grunts and nod his approval. I feel myself swell with pride, only to realize that he doesn’t really care if we get it right or not. He just wants to quiz us to death to make sure we’re on our toes.

We follow him down a few more halls before he stops outside of a room. “Stay here,” he barks and disappears inside.

“See?” Tracy asks me. “He’s on a rampage.”

I sigh. “All morning he’s been like this?”

“All morning,” she confirms. “What do you think it is?”

  “I have no clue.”

“I bet he got dumped,” Michael says, stepping closer to us.

Tracy laughs. “Yeah, right. Who’d date that guy?”

“He is really handsome and probably rich,” Michael points out.

“But a total asshole,” Tracy counters. “I mean, I had a crush on him at first, but god, he’s terrible.”

“He’s not that bad,” I say, feeling defensive.

“Please, he’s a total dick,” Michael says. “But I can see someone dating him anyway.”

“Ugh, come on. Not all women want assholes. That’s such a stupid cliché.” Tracy makes a face.

“Would you date him?” Michael asks me.

I blink rapidly and stare at him. “Uh,” I manage to say.

But he doesn’t seem to notice. “See, I get that he’s tough, but that can be kind of attractive, right? Somebody could go for that.”

“Not me,” Tracy grumbles. “I mean, sure, at first I wanted him to ravish me, but now I just want him to forget I exist.”

“He’s not that bad,” I say weakly and Michael grins at me.

“You’d totally date him,” he says.

  “I wouldn’t.”

“Wow, you totally would,” Tracy says, piling on with a laugh. “Look at her. She’s blushing!”

I roll my eyes but they’re right, I am blushing. I wish I could tell them why, though.

Gavin comes back out a minute later and leads the pack onward, down to another patient. He quizzes us as we go, and I keep shooting him looks, trying to figure out why he’s in such a bad mood.

Michael can’t be right. I don’t think Gavin’s dating anyone, at least, I really hope he isn’t. It’s not like we’re exclusive but I’d be pretty pissed if I found out that I’m his side chick or something insane like that.

He doesn’t strike me as that kind of man though. He’s straightforward and no bullshit, and juggling women probably isn’t his style. He’d straight up tell me he’s with someone else, or maybe even invite me for a threesome. But he wouldn’t hide it.

Oh, hell. I hope he wouldn’t.

The thought keeps nagging at me as we go through our day. Gavin’s mood never improves, but at least everyone’s getting their questions right. That’s keeping him happy enough, or at least not yelling.

Right up until we’re all meant to go on break for lunch. “Michael,” Gavin grunts just before we’re all dismissed. Michael straightens, a frown on his face. “The apex heartbeat is normally heard or felt which intercostal space?”

Michael hesitates. We all stand there for precious seconds, staring at him, as he silently moves his lips, his eyes slowly widening. Gavin’s frown gets deeper as Michael says nothing for thirty seconds.

Oh, god. This is a really basic question and he’s blanking. I know he knows this, there’s no way he wouldn’t, but he’s panicking. I want to help him but I know that if I speak up, it’ll only be worse.

Finally, Michael opens his mouth. “Right… fifth.”

My heart drops. Gavin’s face turns into ice.

  “Fifth?” he asks softly.

“Uh,” Michael grunts. “I mean, shit.”

“Shit isn’t the right answer. Are you fucking kidding me?”

Michael turns as white as a ghost. “I’m sorry. I’m blanking.”

“He’s just put on the spot,” I say quickly.

Gavin wheels around and glares at me. “Fucking right he is. He’s a goddamn doctor. You think patients care if he’s panicking or not?” He turns back to Michael. “You’re wrong. The answer is right fourth. You were close, but who gives a shit? You were wrong.”

Michael stammers something, maybe an apology, but who knows. Gavin steps toward him, eyes hard.

“You can’t make mistakes,” he says softly. “Not on something so fucking simple. I’m serious Michael. I’m not sure you have what it takes to be a
real doctor. Maybe you should go back to vet school or something. Pathetic.”

We all stare at the two of them. Michael looks like he wants to cry and Gavin’s glaring at him like he wants to murder the poor kid.

It’s insane. He got one question wrong, one easy question that he just blanked on and panicked. Gavin’s acting like it’s a life-or-death situation and it’s not, it’s just not. There’s no reason for him to call Michael pathetic. That’s not teaching him anything.

Anger wells up inside of me.

“You’re all dismissed,” Gavin grunts at the group. They all turn and walk away as fast as they can, Tracy sidling up next to Michael to try and comfort him a little bit.

But I don’t move. I glare at Gavin, so pissed I can barely stand it.

“And what do you want, Melody?” he asks me softly, eyes still hard.

“You didn’t have to be an asshole to him,” I say.

He smirks. “You think so? You think I was too hard.”

  “I know you were.”

He steps toward me. “Careful. Just because I like fucking you doesn’t mean I won’t punish you for real.”

I ball my hands up into fists. “Go ahead, asshole. Punish me. But lay off the rest of them. I know you’re in a shitty mood today but there’s no reason to take it out on us.”

That seems to surprise him. “I’m not in a bad mood.”

“You clearly are. You’re an asshole, but you’re not normally so fucking cruel.”

He winces and shakes his head. “Go join the rest of your class, Melody. I don’t have time for this.”

“Oh, of course you don’t. What, did you get dumped or something?”

The words leave my lips before I’m even thinking about it. His face looks surprised for a second then quickly morphs into anger, matching my own.

“So what if I did?” he snaps. “You think I owe you something?”

“You’re damn right you do,” I say, not thinking at all anymore. I know my temper’s getting the best of me right now but I want to slap him in the face so badly I can barely hold back.
