“Yes,” he said. “Is that wrong?”

“Only if it wasn’t a good kiss,” Zan said and kissed Cade before extending a hand to Zaria. “Does she taste good?”

“Zan,” Cade muttered and sneaked a peek at her. Zaria looked at him and lightly swatted Zan’s chest. “Find out for yourself.”

“Hmm,” Zan said and Zaria looked at him only to be kissed softly.

Cade’s arm went around her waist holding her to him while Zan did the same. She felt so safe and protected with them both holding her. And she felt as if she’d finally found her home.

Zan broke the kiss and lightly kissed the tip of her nose. His eyes were filled with passion and hunger that took her breath away.

“I don’t know—I want you to be part of our life,” Cade blurted out and she looked at him. “I’m not making promises, Zaria. I’m just saying you’re the only woman I’ve ever been really attracted to, and you make me feel—I’m not that good with these kinds of words.” He broke off in frustration.

She nodded and slipped an arm around him. “I understand,” she said. “For now, I accept your fumbling, but a year from now when you’re certain I’m the right woman, I expect a little more smoothness.” She nipped his jaw and he laughed.

“We both want to see where this goes,” Zan told her softly and lowered his head to kiss the side of her neck. “Let’s grab some food.”

She frowned. She saw no signs of anything having been cooked. “Huh?”

Zan laughed. “It’s nothing fancy. We’re going back up to the lodge in about an hour. We need to talk some things out. Why don’t you sit? Cade, grab the pitcher of tea and some glasses.”

She watched them both wash their hands before going about their respective tasks.

“What things?” She didn’t understand what needed to be talked about. And what lodge were they going to?

“I’m sure you know something by now,” Cade said and set three glasses on the smooth surface of the island. “The anchors and the possible destructi—” The sound of the house phone cut him off. He turned to see Zan hurrying from the room.

“I mean, I know about the transformation.”

“Let’s get up to the lodge,” Zan called. “Turn off the stove, Cade.”

Cade did as he was bid and she climbed from the stool she’d gotten up on. Then, she followed him from the room.

“What happened?” Cade demanded, taking her hand as they hurried out behind Zan.

“I’m not sure. Keyos, just ordered us up to the lodge.”

The drive took them only five minutes, but they were filled with tension. She didn’t press for answers because she knew they didn’t have any. When they arrived at the building that looked more like a big log cabin, three other trucks were already there.

“What’s going on?” Zan demanded once they were inside.

Glancing around, Zaria took in the corridors and open space of the kitchen and eating area.

“Travis just got a call from Trek Dillon, and Dade called to tell us Tangela, one of the western elders, is dead.”

“What!” Cade exclaimed. “How does he know?”

“Her roommate, Ursula, was there,” Rhys told them. “She was the one who found her.”

“So, I guess it’s time we made a decision,” Zier said, pulling Rhys back into his arms, and Kel wrapped an arm around him.

Zaria’s stomach tightened at the love she saw in the room. Even Daisy and her men had their arms around each other, each one looking somber. She was missing this kind of love in her life, but she wasn’t missing the fear and tension she was picking up.

Cade took her hand and Zan looked at her before saying, “What are we doing? Our chances of dealing with this have been severely crippled with another anchor gone.”

“My question is who could have known?” Rhys said.

“Maybe it was a guess,” Zan murmured. “Tangela and Logan were quietly seeing each other.”

“Or maybe they were looking for any information Judge Logan might have sent to her,” Jaxon said. “Maybe his killer thought she might know something.”

“You’re saying someone knows the transformation might destroy this town?” Keyos asked.

“What?” Zaria exclaimed. “That’s not supposed to happen.”

“Not if the anchors are alive,” Travis said. “But we’re down six and there’s only one chance for a five-point play.”

  “Huh?”

Cade explained things to her while the others took seats at the long counter and drinks were poured and sandwiches made.

Zaria was glad she was already sitting down when he finished or she’d have fallen down. She wasn’t prepared for this. Her parents hadn’t been either.

“Without the filter anchors, I think the crystal anchors will probably survive the longest,” Travis said. “You’re built to handle the power, but probably not the overload you’re going to get.”

“The other two anchors that should exist probably don’t,” Zier said. “So, we uproot our lives or we die.”

  “What did Trek want?”

“The southern elders are aware of the situation and they want to find the anchors and let them know what’s coming.”

  “They aren’t leaving?” Zaria asked.

“Apparently not,” Travis said. “Trek said they were going to try to figure out a way to deal with this. They probably aren’t aware of the magnitude of the situation.”

Zaria put her head on Cade’s shoulder. “My parents need to know.” She straightened and slid from the stool, pulling her cell phone from her pocket.

“We can make a life someplace else,” Rhys said. “I told Dade, and he’s wrapping things up with the murder before he can come home. But I’ll stay if you guys want to.”

Kel pushed out a rough breath. “I’m in, but, Jaxon, you don’t have to stay.”

“I’m staying with you,” he said angrily. “Zier?”

“No place else I’d rather be.” He shrugged.

“I told my parents everything we know,” Daisy confessed. “They said the rest of the cats would stay. They’ve moved to the north for now to avoid any further loss of life in case of another attack.”

“Then, we might have a fighting chance,” Keyos said. “Zan?”

“We’re brothers,” he said. “One stays, we all stay.” He looked at Cade.

Cade nodded. “You’re home now, baby. My place is with you.”

“My parents are staying,” Zaria told them, rejoining the group.

“So I guess we hold,” Zan said, meeting the stare of each of his brothers and then Cade, who was holding Zaria’s hand again.

When his eyes met hers she nodded, not as determined as they all were, but bound by her duty to her family to stay even in the face of difficult odds.

  Chapter Twenty-Four

Decision made and dinner finished, the family decided to remain at the lodge for tonight. According to Zier’s grandfather, the next wave would probably come soon. Tonight or tomorrow at the latest.

“Tomorrow morning Keyos is meeting with the other elders to figure out who’s staying. That will really decide where we go from here,” Zan told Cade and Zaria as they stood in one of the bedrooms located on that floor of the lodge.

Zaria was looking out the window into the dark and Cade sat on the bed. Zan stood with his hand on the footboard standing so he could look at them both.

“That’s wise,” Cade said. “We shouldn’t stay if it’s not going to be enough of us here.”

Zan sat next to him. “I’m scared, too, baby,” he said and Cade leaned into him hugging him. “It’ll be hard out there but as long as we’re together we’ll do fine.”

Zaria joined them and Zan pulled her onto his lap. “The world out there isn’t like this one.”

“No, but we’ll do what we’ve always done,” Zan replied. “Make do.”

She rubbed her cheek against the side of his face. “How can the three of us have a real life together out there?

“We fight,” Cade said softly and captured her hand.

She smiled and leaned over to kiss him. That’s when the ground began shaking. The bed moved on the wood floor, sliding a few inches, and Zaria let out a startled scream. Zan’s arms tightened around her and he got to his feet.

“Doorway,” he told Cade who was moving with him.

He held Zaria between him and Cade as the shaking continued another minute. Zaria gasped and her back bowed.

  “Cade!”

Cade tightened his hold around her, and his eyes turned vivid blue, the tiny little swirls enlarging the green bright. Zan cursed and held them both as their bodies trembled and glowed with energy.

Zaria screamed again, but her scream wasn’t the only one he heard. Travis and Daisy were screaming, too.

Zan’s chest tightened and he felt as if his heart was being ripped out as he listened to his lover’s pain. Cade’s teeth were clenched against whatever was happening to him and Zan knew he was trying to be strong for their woman.

“Zan,” Cade whispered. “I love you.”

“I love you, baby,” he whispered and kissed him as he backed them to the bed. They reached it and he broke the kiss. He sat down, pulling Zaria onto his lap.

“Cade, it hurts,” Zaria said on a gasping breath. “I wanted to have you love me like you two love each other.” Tears filled her eyes.

“Zari.” He kissed her, his eyes still vivid blue as energy poured from his ears. While he glowed brighter, her glow decreased and Zan wondered if he was taking the brunt of the energy for her. “I am falling in love with you,” he confessed and shock filled her eyes.

“Cade.” her cry was pained but Zan saw the happiness in her eyes and it tightened his chest.

Zan took Cade’s hand and his eyes widened as a rush of energy burst through him silencing the words he was about to speak. He felt as if he was being overloaded with power, heard the crash of a window, and Zaria went limp in his hold. Cade met his gaze and the power he saw in them shook him to his core.

Zan didn’t shy from it. He held his gaze even as lightheadedness made him dizzy. “Cade.”

Darkness tugged at him and he gave in to it, Cade and Zaria in his thoughts.

  * * * *

The energy pouring through him was hot and cold at once, vast and limitless. The depths of the planet, the darkness of space filled his vision. He saw things he’d never seen—red earth and green grass along with red granite and sandstones. Cade heard laughter, experienced pain that cut him deep.

Light shone in through the window and it was day. The pale wisps were warm as they fell over his face. Daisy’s screaming had stopped along with Travis’s and there was silence in the house. He wondered if they were okay.

“Cade?” Daisy’s voice was in his mind, a whisper so clear he’d swear she was next to him.

  “Daisy?”

“I feel so much,” she said. “Joy, pain—I can feel your love for them.”

“I feel yours, too,” he said shock an electric finger on his stomach.

“Do you think we’re dying? Do you think everyone else is already dead?”

“I don’t know,” he said, and then like the snap of a rubber band, she was gone, pulled out of his mind, and it was dark again.

The next morning Cade woke to a chill on his skin and the wind blowing outside. Zaria was coming slowly awake next to him, but he climbed out of bed to go peep out the window.

The sun was coming up over the horizon on a gray day. But the town was still there.

  “Cade?”

He turned to look at a drowsy-eyed Zaria. Her hair tumbled around her face, giving her a cute, exotic look. God, she was beautiful.

He went to her and brushed her hair back. “We’re still alive,” he murmured.

She laughed. “Very much so.” She touched his cheek and leaned toward him for a kiss.

He let her lead as he pushed his fingers into her hair and held her head close. He didn’t think, didn’t fear. He had the man he wanted and the only woman who would ever own his heart.

She broke the kiss and sat up, running her hand up his chest. “Cade?”

He tugged his T-shirt over his head and tossed it to the bed next to her and Zaria smiled.

“Yes,” she said softly. “I do want you.” She leaned forward and swiped her tongue over his nipple. She scraped the tender flesh with her teeth and he groaned.

“Zari.” Her mouth felt good and hot on his skin as she teased the other nipple while pushing the sweats he’d pulled on last night down.

“I want you,” she said again, hunger in her tone. Her soft hands stroked down his hips and over the curve of his ass. “Don’t keep me waiting. Come to me.”

He pushed her back on the bed and moved over her before pulling off her T-shirt, loaned to her by Zan. He blew over the dark peak standing at attention before slowly licking over it. She moaned and he closed his lips over the nipple and sucked.

Zaria pushed her fingers into his hair and held his head against her. “Don’t stop,” she pleaded.

Cade ran his tongue around the succulent flesh and laved it before turning his attention to its twin. He took his time licking and then sucking as he cupped the heavy weight of one swollen mound in his hand.

She was soft as satin and smelled so good, so womanly. Her moans were filled with lust and the soft scent of her damp pussy was perfuming the air already. He released her nipple and trailed kisses down her belly. She was firm yet soft and curvy in the right places.

He pulled her thighs further apart and moved between them as he held her gaze. Using two fingers, he parted her folds and licked up her slit. She jerked on the bed and he repeated the action.

“Yes, I think you taste good,” he said. He’d done this before with Alicia, but he hadn’t liked it over much. With Zaria, he loved the scent of her, and the taste of her pussy sent lightning sparking in his veins.

Zaria heard movement from the direction of the bedroom door and turned her head to find Zan watching. He slowly came in and bent to kiss her. It was a greedy kiss, hot and wet. She pushed her fingers into his hair moaning into the kiss as Cade’s tongue played around her clit.

She lifted her head and Zan caressed her cheek before reaching into his own sweat pants and drawing his engorged cock free. She stared at it. The head was dark with bands of blue and black around it while the shaft was thick.

Her mouth watered and he guided his cock to it. She closed her lips around the tip and sucked. He pushed deeper into her heat and she moaned. Her body was humming with need like she’d never known.

Zan pinched one nipple and then the other and hissed as she tightened the suction of her mouth. Zaria ran one hand down to rake her nails over Cade’s back.

“Hmm, baby,” Zan moaned roughly. “Your mouth is making me crazy. Suck harder.”

She obeyed and gasped as Cade sucked her clit. “God, Cade,” she screamed. Fire raced up her spine and she arched her hips off the bed sending Zan deeper into her mouth.

She gripped him, her hand over his, and he gave her a slow smile and removed his hand.

She pumped him and sucked as her hips writhed beneath Cade’s delicious machinations.

“Fuck, Cade, I’m going to come.”

Cade drove two fingers into her pussy and fucked her with firm strokes as he licked around her clit. And then he lifted his head to kiss the inside of her thigh.

“You’re so sexy spread out like this, isn’t she, Zan?”

“I don’t think she has any idea how hot she is right now,” Zan drawled. “I want her, Cade.”

Cade pulled his fingers free of her tight grip and she groaned in protest. At the same time, Zan pulled from her mouth.

  “Cade,” she whined.

He chuckled and gripped his cock and stroked it as Zan moved onto the bed behind her. He lifted her up onto his lap.

“Take me slow, baby,” he ordered and she reached f
or his cock and held it before sliding down on it. As he breached her, she gasped and Cade stole the sound with a greedy kiss.

“Yeah,” Zan groaned. “Come on, sweet Zari, move on me, baby.”

She braced her hands on the bed and pushed up with her knees. She slid up and down on him. The thickness parted her, the heavy veins caressing her. She closed her eyes and rested her head against his shoulder.

  “So good,” she said.

“I want to join the fun,” Cade said. She opened her eyes to watch him crawl toward her. He came onto his knees when he reached her and she spread her legs wider, wanting him now. Zan spread his legs too and Cade guided the bloated head of his dick to the entrance of her pussy. She held her breath, not sure if she could take them both.

Zan pinched her nipples and she moaned as Cade’s cock slid inside her cunt, gliding against Zan’s cock already coated in her juices.

“Relax a little more,” Zan crooned. “We can do this another way if this is too much, too soon.”

“No,” she said breathlessly. “I want it like this.”

Cade slowly filled her and Zan groaned, caressing her arms, inundating her with sensation. She tightened on them both, full and wanting this pleasure. It felt as if everything hinged on how they handled it, how she handled it.

Cade drew back and thrust into her hot pussy.

“Oh, yes,” he breathed. “Zan, she’s so tight on us.”

“She’s a perfect fit,” Zan said and leaned back against the pillows.

Cade drove into her pussy, withdrew and Zan stroked up. The rhythm they set up was like the melody of a finely strummed symphony. Each thrust, each groan pushed them closer to a climax she wanted to prolong as she savored the feel of them both inside her.

“Cade!” she screamed as he hammered into her, they both took her with abandon and hunger that blinded her. She drew her nails down Cade’s back. “Good!”

“Zari!” Cade screamed her named as he slammed his dick into her again and again.

“Oh fuck!” Zan cried and he drove into her, cock pushing her over the edge. Tiny pinpoints of light blinded her and the sound of them coming with her filled her ears.
