by Linda Gerald

“Harry, you were right all of the time. God would not separate us without giving us a long life together. The children are well and happy. If you still want me, I am home.”

A scream from the hallway alerted them that Dottie George waited in the hall with her ear to the door.

“Come on in, Dottie. Our Elizabeth has returned.” He looked into her face. Dottie ran into the room. Heavily, she dropped onto the bed beside them. Her green curler bobbed at the back of her head. None of this seemed remotely possible.

Harry looked into the eyes of his future wife. For the first time, since they met, they were free to make plans for the rest of their lives.

“Elizabeth, Ah, Christine, is your desire a large wedding or a small one?”

Mischievously, she looked at him. “I want a very small one, with only those that we love most.” He nodded in agreement.

“Well, done, Christine. I promise you that after our wedding, we will return to the Brown’s in London. Thawill be the beginning of our honeymoon. We will end it in Rome but not before a return to Venice. Does that please you, Elizabeth? Ah, Christine.” Dottie’s strong arms held them both.

“Harry, I don’t care what you call me. Just love me.” That was the easiest assignment of his life. Only Gocould orchestrate such an incredible story of love.

  CLAIRE’S HOUSE

Deep in the bayou of Louisiana sets a strange plot of land. Beautiful, green grass covers a perfectly square piece of land. It is surrounded by heavy swamps. The savageness of the area is in the folklore from earlier generations. Alligators roam as well as large lizards and snakes. Still, the square of land is lovely to behold. Although it feels as if you are miles from civilization, the back of the location is only a mile from Interstate 10. A magnetism exists here.

Christophe and Claire Gautier inherited it from Christophe’s Cajun uncle Louie. Claire felt hesitant to build a home on such a raw piece of land but her husband convinced her that it would make a gorgeous destination from their Paris mansion.

Years went into planning a paradise for their future children. At least twice each year, they visited the site from their base in France. Each time, Claire developed a stronger bond. Was it the land, the location, or the dream of a very large, white home surrounded with flower and vegetable gardens? To the surprise of the couple, the land proved hardy and fertile. Christophe’s trial garden, of tomatoes and bright peppers, surprised them. Not only did they grow rapidly, they flourished. Locals commented that they had never witnessed such healthy and vibrant plants.

All of this persuaded the hesitant wife to build here, on this strange place. So, on a bright summer’s morning in June, the heavy equipment arrived with the plan to build a seven-thousand square foot home of exquisite luxury. It would be accompanied by a large pool as well as extensive gardens.

The French couple’s family were excited. Everyone looked forward to spending glorious summers in the United States with this beloved duo. That was everyone except Aunt Michelle.

Michele was ninety-seven years old. Louie was her husband. She threatened to burn the Deed of Ownership to this awful land. Michele knew the power of the innocent-looking place. Horrible repercussions existed whenever someone fell in love with “Frenchie.” The name given a hundred years earlier to this place of chaos and confusion. Sadly, she flicked a tear from her wrinkled face.

“Please, not Claire and Christophe. What have they done?”
