  A N D T IM E

  R E C K O N IN G

Some form o f the zodiac and astrology can be found in m ost cu ltures and through all tim e, and it is the focus for the most im portant prehistoric ritual sites. The stars and planets provided

a great canopy for ancient people to connect with their deities as

well as their surroundings. Because o f its light and warmth, the

sun often sym bolized the highest and m ost powerful God. With

its regular waxing and waning m atching the fem inine m enstrual

cycle, the m oon becam e the symbol o f the Goddess.

In a w orld w ithout electric light or clocks, the moon was a significant beacon for reckoning time. There are 13 lunations within the cycle o f the year, and each lunar month consists o f 2 8 days.

Figure 3: W heel o f the Year relating to the zodiac, C eltic tree

This left an extra day that the Celts referred to as the “ nam eless

  calendar, and Sabbats

day"— perhaps the basis for the proverbial “year and a day.”

From tim e to time, this day coincided with the W inter Solstice.

The N orse Runic half-months, or fortnights, were also based on

the 2 8 -day lunar cycle. H indu festivals are still scheduled according to their lunar m onths and fall on different days each year.

The cycle o f seasons, m onths, days, tim es o f day, and the revolving pattern o f stars give us the wheel o f the year. Cyclical time, rather than linear time, appeals to us on a deep level because the circle is a sym bol o f unity and com pleteness. With no beginning or end, it gives us a sense o f tim elessness, and that

we, too, in som e way continue on forever.
