He took both of Lizzy’s hands in his. Then, considering her father watched and his parents were there, he thought he’d better do this right. He dropped to one knee before her.

The surprise on her face was beautiful and priceless.

“Maybe we should be doing this outside of Marston’s Tunnel,” he muttered.

Behind him, her father said, “No.”

She grinned down at him and then bit her lip as if she might burst out laughing.

He grew serious. “I don’t have a ring to give you—at least not yet. And while we need to slow things down a little, I want nothing more than to take things day by day with you. My job is up in the air right now, so I’m not really sure what I’ll be doing in the future, but Elizabeth Signorino, whatever it is, I want to be doing it with you beside me.”

“That sounds like a plan to me.” Lizzy’s voice was filled with happiness.

He stood up. Then she was in his arms, and he was vaguely aware of those he loved around them applauding.

“What kind of a proposal was that?” her father asked.

“A perfect one, Dad.” Lizzy snuggled deeper into his embrace.

Luca was perplexed and gave a slight shake of his head. “Young people these days,” he muttered. “We are doomed.”

  In Mac’s arms, Lizzy laughed.

He was home, surrounded by family and the inviting aroma of pastry and coffee. Lizzy was in his arms, safe. His damned leg didn’t hurt at all. He felt the cloud that had hung over his hometown was beginning to fade.

  It was, indeed, perfect.

She has a secret weapon that will keep her alive—one that she can’t even reveal to the infuriating, sexy cop.

Detective Nick O’Reilly’s job is to keep the star witness—a gorgeous but snobby socialite—alive to testify against the killer, even though he sometimes feels like throttling her himself.
