And since I am taking this project very seriously I will not be wasting any time with doodles of smiling pandas or what have you, I will be keeping a log.

(Note: All good logs start with weather and inventory)

As part of History Week we have been asked to dress up as our favourite person from history. Even though this order came directly from the school, Mum was not happy to find that I had used all her creams and gels to get my hair to curl up at the sides like Captain Cook’s. I told her that in every photo on Google he has this particular hairstyle and that if I am to follow in my ancestor’s footsteps it’s absolutely essential I have it too.

Unfortunately, one of the creams I used was for removing hair, so she washed it all out and all my hard work was for nothing. I think it’s fine though.

After MUM washed all the cream out, I used my baby sister Maisy’s talc powder to get my hair white and just wore my tricorn hat to cover the bald spots. It wasn’t perfect but it was pretty close.

I can definitely say that I looked the best. (Jenny Philpot also looked pretty great, she came as an Egyptian mummy wrapped entirely in toilet paper. Good one, Philpot.) But some people really didn’t get it. Alice Toolie came as Taylor Swift, and I happen to know for a fact that Taylor Swift was not an Ancient Egyptian or ancient anything. Lucas Terrazzo also missed the point when he came dressed as Spiderman. I told Lucas that Spiderman was not a historical figure but apparently his dad has some REALLY old comics so that makes it okay, I guess.

Ms Fennel was extremely impressed with my effort. She said I really looked like James Cook, which is to be expected since I AM James Cook. I’m glad she liked my outfit because she’s going to be seeing a lot more of it.

  ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Kate and Jol are award-winning children’s book authors. Their chapter book series Captain Jimmy Cook Discovers was selected as CBCA Honour Book of the Year in 2017. When they’re not writing letters for Alice and Jimmy, they write picture books. Their titles include Parrot Carrot (2011), Room on Our Rock (2018) and Are You My Bottom? (2018). They live in Sydney with their two sons and dream of one day owning an eggcup schngrooodle-itzu, just like Alice.

  ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR

Grace West is a Melbourne-based illustrator and book designer who works under the nom de plume North South Grace West. When at school, Grace’s notebooks were covered in drawings and scribbles very similar to Alice’s! She loves drinking coffee, travelling and, most of all, escaping the computer to sketch in her notebook.
