“Dro, chill man. Get your ass over here on the other side of the room so I can discuss this little business and y’all be on y’all way,” Tamar said and I nodded as I backed up away from Neek.

“Yea bitch, like I said, I won’t miss the next time. I didn’t stutter muthafucka’. Long as you stay away from my wife, we good.”

“Fuck being good. We ain’t good until I find out if that baby is mine. I wet that pussy up every time I was in it fuck nigga, so I know that baby mine. She was on this dick every time she got a chance bitch, so I know she ain’t even have time to fuck you.”

“Dro!” Tamar yelled, but I was heated. Starr and this nigga was trying to play me to left talking about killing my muthafuckin’ seed. I knew Starr wasn’t gonna get no damn abortion and only called me with that shit thinking she could get rid of me. They had me fucked up if they thought I was gonna let another nigga raise my child. I knew the baby Starr was carrying was mine because she was fucking me way too often to even be giving that nigga some pussy.

“Aye, get your cousin, Tae, for real, for real.”

  “Dro, I’ll hit you up—”

  POW!

  “Noooo—fuck!”

  30: Tamar

For a few seconds, I sat back in my seat stunned along with everyone else at what just happened. It took a minute for it to register and it finally didn’t until I heard Neek on the floor gurgling and gasping for air. I jumped up from my chair and quickly ran over to him.

“Go get me some towels!” I yelled out to no one in particular. “Ahh, fuck! Breathe nigga. Come on now, Neek.”

I heard the familiar sound of a gun clicking behind me and looked over my shoulder to see Dro walking back over towards Neek. He raised the gun and I jumped up and pushed him out the way just as the gun went off. I brought my hand back and punched him dead in his fuckin’ face.

“You the lost your fuckin’ mind nigga.”

“That bitch still breathing,” Dro spat and tried to get around me. Big Ace wrapped his arms around Dro and squeezed him until the pistol dropped from his hand. It almost looking like a big ass python wrapped around a cat with the way that Big Ace was holding him.

“Get him the fuck outta here before I gotta tell my mama that I had to kill her only fucking nephew.”

“You taking his side! We supposed to be family,” Dro yelled as Big Ace carried him towards the door.

“Bitch that’s my muthafuckin’ family too. And nigga did you not think about my kids that’s upstairs in their fuckin’ room! Man get him outta here for real!”

“You better let him die, Tae! Let that nigga die! I’ll be back!” Dro punched the wall on his way out and I grabbed the towels out of Melo’s hands the moment he came back into my office.

  “Oh, my God!” Rozalyn screamed.

“Come on man! Is you niggas slow? Who the fuck let her in here?” I pressed the towels down over Neek’s chest and then looked around the room to see who was still standing around. I saw Kevin’s lieutenant Gotti standing in the corner with his hands on top of his head. “Aye, Gotti, grab them keys off my desk bruh and pull that Escalade around for me.”

He nodded his head and quickly ran out of the office. I looked down at Neek and could see that he was struggling to breathe. I couldn’t call him an ambulance and have the police snooping around my house. With the way he was looking, I wasn’t sure if he would make it if we dropped him off.

“Come on my nigga, fight this shit man,” I told him. “Say you know Starr done been through this before. You can’t put her through it again. Come bruh, fight. Breathe.”

Neek nodded his head, but his breathing sped up and I knew this was the end for him. A tear escaped my eye and I quickly brought my hand up to wipe it away.

  “Tell him to hurry up!”

“He out front,” Big Ace said as he ran back into the room. We both picked him up and carried him out of the house and placed him in the back of the truck. I climbed inside trying to keep pressure on Neek’s chest. Gotti sped down the long driveway and hit the corner damn near on two wheels.

I punched my fist into the back of the seat repeatedly as I shook my head. Damn. I knew them niggas was beefing. I should’ve just sent Dro back to fuckin’ New York to get money. Fuck man; I thought to myself. I looked down at Neek and he wasn’t moving at all. His body was limp and his lips were turning blue. I reached into my pocket and called up Rozalyn and she answered on the first ring.

“Baby, calm down,” I told her and waited for her to stop crying so hard. “Listen to me. Roz, you hear me.”

  “Yes,” she said.

“Call Natalie and have her come sit with the kids. Then I want you to go get Starr. Don’t tell her shit just bring her to the hospital.”

“Is he okay, Tamar? What happened to him?”

“Just do what I said, Rozalyn. Do that and I’ll see you at the hospital. Make sure you take Melo with you.”

I hung up the phone and rested my head in the seat.

  “This nigga dead.”

  31: Starr

I was sewing a net over my client’s braids that I just finished in preparation for her sew in. I had been only working for a little over and hour and the wooziness I was feeling was slowly starting to get to me. I wanted to cancel my schedule for the rest of the day, but I had already been slacking with all the bullshit I had put myself through and I didn’t want my clients going elsewhere. I loved doing hair and make-up. It was the only other thing I could ever see myself doing since I could never go back to the street life anymore. And then if I was ever faced with having to pick between the two, I knew that I would choose doing hair hands down.

“You talk to Rozalyn today?” Brian asked as he handed me a threaded needle.

“Nah, I told her that if she needed to contact me call me on the shop phone because my damn replacement phone still haven’t came through the mail yet. All I know is the bitch has seemed to fall in love with my car and don’t wanna give it back. She okay?”

“So, I talked to the heifer on the phone last night and the bitch was staying at Tamar’s house while the hoe Keysha was there.”

I laughed. “See, Rozalyn be doing too much. Why and how?”

“Supposedly after she fucked that nigga Jaheim a few nights ago, someone got into their hotel room and tried to kill them niggas. Chile, Jaheim was shot in the chest, and she said that she tried to check up on him, and he caught ghost on her.”

“Oh hell nah, hand me that phone so I can call her and see what’s really going on. What you mean somebody? You know who the hell that somebody was.”

“If you shut up and listen I will tell you what’s going on. Damn hoe.”

“Well bitch if you get to the point and stop being so dramatic, you can actually tell me what’s going on.”

“It was a bitch who tried to kill them and not only that, the crazy ass hoe tagged Rozalyn’s house and tore the muthafucka’ up.”

“Nobody but Keysha. Rozalyn should’ve let me whoop that hoe when she showed up to her front porch the last time. That bitch would’ve been lost that baby.”

“Szzz,” Brian jumped back and gave me a weird look. “Now, you know that’s mean as hell. And if you know she lost the baby then you know damn well it wasn’t her who did the shit. It was the other baby mama.”

  “What other baby mama?”

  “Kari, bitch. The whack job.”

“When she get out?” I asked surprised to hear this shit because the last I heard the bitch was still locked up for all the mayhem she caused years back. I see that hoe must’ve loved her life in jail because she was still up to no good.

“Hell that bitch been free for a good while and didn’t nobody know until she tried to snatch up little Trina in McDonalds when Rozalyn them was on their way to Atlanta yesterday morning.”

“Well I be damned. Tell me the bitch dead. Did somebody shoot the bitch? Knock the bitch out. Tell me somebody at least pinched the bitch.”

Brian cracked up laughing but I
was dead ass serious because Rozalyn do too much of letting these hoes make it. That hoe Kari been outta line. That hoe should’ve already had a tombstone with her name on it.

“Now to the best part,” Brian stood up and whispered in my ear. He was telling me about how Tamar done ate this bitch Rozalyn out on his desk while Keysha was in the same damn house and then how Tamar tried to top his ghetto ass proposal from the last time. Brian even showed me the picture of the ring that he had on his phone and immediately I snatched the phone out of his hand. We were about to Google this muthafucka to find out how much it cost. I swear it looked just like the one that Jay had given to Bey. Let me find out.

“Look, I’m telling you it’s the same damn ring,” I said as we pulled the phone close up to our eyes.

“I’m gonna rob Rozalyn’s ass. That bitch walking around with 5 meal tickets on her finger. That hoe gonna get it.”

“So, she accepted it huh?” I asked as I went back to my client’s head.

“You know she did. She talking about they going house shopping next week because she refuses to live in the same house that he had Keysha in. I don’t even know why she did all that prancing around like she was really over that nigga when she know she wasn’t.”

“We all know she wasn’t over him. I think she was really just doing all that and crying for his attention and as you can see it worked. Nigga went to bank on that ass.”

We shared a laugh when the door to the shop flew open and Dro stepped in. I was at a loss for words when I spotted him. He was covered in blood and all I could think about was Neek at that moment. Ever since the night Neek had me call him, all Neek could talk about was how he was going to kill Dro and now I could see that he must have tried it.

“Let me talk to you, Starr,” Dro said as he came and stood in front of my client.

“No, I told you already to leave me alone.”

“I said let me holla at you. Please man, I’m not in the mood for your smart ass mouth.”

“I don’t give a damn what you in the mood for. I said no. I got a client that I’m working on anyway.”

“You not gonna let me talk to you?”

“Don’t you see me working on my client, Dro?”

Dro pulled a pistol from his back and without warning fired a shot into my client. My mouth dropped open as blood splattered all over my face. I backed away from her and tripped over my own feet. I caught my balance before I hit the floor, but Dro had come over to me and grabbed me by my hair. He pulled me towards the back where my office was located and then pushed me inside. Locking the door behind him, he immediately began pacing back and forth.

“Dro, you need to just calm down right now,” I told him. My purse was locked up in the cabinet behind Dro, and my keys were located inside the desk that was behind him as well. I moved a little closer to him, trying to work my way over to my desk. He brought the gun up and pointed it at me causing me to toss my hands up.

“Don’t tell me to fuckin’ calm down! I’m so sick of bitches like you. I swear to God, you just like my ex!”

Dro started pacing again and I looked at him like he was crazy. He had started hitting himself in the head with the barrel of the gun and was grunting and groaning each time he took a step.

“Look I never meant to hurt you Dro, but I’ve been telling you from the jump that what me and you had was nothing more than friends. That’s it.”

“Bitch, wasn’t just no muthafuckin’ friends! Don’t try that shit with me! You wasn’t fucking me like were just friends, you wasn’t sucking my dick like we were just friends, and each time I nutted in that pussy, I damn sure don’t recall you saying shit about us being no muthafuckin’ friends.”

“You knew that I loved Neek! I told you that I wasn’t gonna leave him and my daughter, Dro!”

“You don’t wanna leave that nigga, but you wanna use me to give you everything that he wasn’t giving you. Talking about some muthafuckin’ friends. Bitch had me cashing out on that ass. Upgrading that raggedy ass Benz you got. Out there buying engagement rings for your ass, house shopping and shit. You really played a nigga man.”

“I never told you to do any of that shit. You did it because you thought it was gonna keep me around.”

“Did you kill my baby?” Dro suddenly rushed in my direction and I ducked and maneuvered my way to the other side of him. He came at me again and I backed up towards my desk.

“Did you kill my fuckin’ seed?” he asked again.

“I haven’t done anything yet. I have an appointment next week, but I don’t know what I’m going to do. My husband doesn’t want to take care of another man’s baby and I don’t want him to have to.”

“Fuck you mean, he don’t wanna take care of another man’s baby? Bitch, do I look like a nigga that would drop my responsibility in another man’s lap? Besides that nigga ain’t gonna be taking care of shit now. Not even his own fucking daughter.”

I was discreetly trying to reach for my keys until I heard the last sentence that came out of Dro’s mouth. I looked at him to see if he was saying what I thought he was saying. When I grazed my eyes over him, I noticed that he had splatters of blood here and there, but I didn’t see any holes. Nothing to indicate that he had been shot.

“You muthafucka!” I ran at him and began punching him over and over again. Dro grabbed my hands and pushed me away from him but I kept coming. I brought my hand up and punched him in the face with all my might. His head snapped back, but he came back at me and knocked me in the face with the butt of the gun.

I fell to the floor, but quickly hopped on my knees, and crawled to my desk. Dro was on me quick. He wrapped his arm under my neck and pulled me backwards.

By now, I could hear police sirens in the distance. I didn’t know how far they were, but this was the first time I could ever remember wishing for a cop to be in my presence now.

I closed my eyes as Dro placed the gun to my head. I prayed to God that someone would be here to look after my baby and made sure she got to Germany to be with my father.

“The fact that killing you would also mean killing my seed, I’m not even gonna do it,” Dro released me and backed away from me as he headed towards the door to leave.

I jumped up and grabbed my keys from desk, but the moment Dro opened up my office door, I was sure he never saw it coming.

POW! POW! POW! POW! POW! POW!

  32: Rozalyn

I had been outside of the shop for over thirty minutes now and every time I tried to tell one of those damn cops that I was the owner, they still wouldn’t let me past. They kept saying that it was a crime scene and that they couldn’t let anyone back until the officers cleared the scene.

I was so freaking scared because Brian wasn’t answering his phone and I knew that Starr didn’t have a phone for the moment. I just prayed that nothing had happened to either of them. I couldn’t take more bad news.

I started to get a little antsy, and started to walk away so that I could try to go through the parking garage and chance it by going through the back of the building. I looked around the crowd one more time before turning to leave, but stopped when I seen someone being pulled out on a gurney. My heart dropped in the middle of my stomach.

“Please God don’t let it be one of them. Please God,” I silently prayed.

  “There they are,” Melo said.

Just then, Brian came prancing out of the building with his hand interlaced with Starr’s. Starr had a big white bandage over her forehead, but she looked to be fine.

“Starr! Starr! Brian!” I screamed while jumping up and down and waving my hand so that they could see me. They both ran in my direction and ducked under the crime scene tape. We all hugged each other for a few moments and just stood there in silence. “I’m so glad that y’all are okay. I was scared when I pulled up and seen all these people out here and the police. They wouldn’t let me come back. What happened?”

“Dro, he killed my client, Aneesa…and then he said something about killing
Neek. Have you heard something?”

“They won’t tell me anything and only said for me to get you to the hospital.”

“Just tell me, Rozalyn, is he dead? Did Dro really kill him?” Starr cried.

“I don’t know, Starr. I promise you if I knew, I would tell you. Tamar just told me to come over here and get you and bring you to the hospital.”

  “Okay, let’s go.”

  ***

Melo got us to the hospital in under fifteen minutes. We all ran inside and looked around to see where everyone else was. Tamar, Big Ace, Gotti, Young Bino, and Beanie were all sitting in the waiting area with faces as cold as ice. They were all in their own thoughts that didn’t any of them see us come in.

“Tae,” I called out and he raised his head. His clothes were drenched in blood and he had dried up blood on his hands and arms. I didn’t care one way or the other and just ran over to him and hugged him as he stood up.

“What are they saying?” Starr asked as she came over to us.

“They haven’t said anything yet. I honestly don’t know what’s going on. Maybe you should go over there and see what you can find out since you his wife,’’ Tamar told her.

Starr nodded her head and she and Brian walked over to the nurses’ station. I looked up at him trying to see if I could read his face. It seemed like he was hiding something.

“Is he okay, Tamar?” I asked him and he took in a deep breath and released it as he sat back down.

“I don’t know. When we brought him, he wasn’t breathing, but I heard them say they had a pulse, then said they were losing him. Shit, it was touch and go and we ain’t heard shit since we been here.”

I sat down in Tamar’s lap and rested my head against his chest. This whole scene felt so familiar to me and it reminded of the times when I used to have to sit back and wait for someone to tell me what was going on with Tamar. Instantly, tears spilled from my eyes and I broke down crying so hard.

“Calm damn babe, you gotta stay strong for Starr. You can’t lose it. She gonna need somebody to hold her up. You hear me.”
