Lucy looks very sad for a moment. John was born in America and does not know anything of African tribes, but he realizes she must have lost a family she loved. He touches her arm gently. That encourages Lucy to trust him, and she looks up.

“The Ashanti slavers was still lookin’ for me! And Master Asher, he tells me I is a free black woman from the first day with him because he did not buy me, you see, I come to him free. And he honors that.”

John was thoughtful and silent. Then he said, “I understand, but you do know that all slaves here is free now, don’t you, Lucy? Didn’t Sherman’s men read the Emancipation Proclamation when they was here?”

“I heerd tell of it!” says Lucy. “I ain’t stupid! And most of the other coloreds have run off, as you can see. Us here, we stay by choice.”

“You and the two others I seen outside?” he asks. “Are they…relatives to you?”

“No. No. It’s just me,” she says, meaning that she is not married or committed to Sam or Elijah.

“I see,” says John thoughtfully. “Where is the rest of Savannah’s family now? Did they move off with the war?”

“No. A few years after we come back here to the big house, a rash of yellow fever breaks out all over this town and country. When Savannah's family becomes ill, I takes the best care of them that ever I could, but they was delicate white folks, and the heat combined with the fever just killed ‘em. The sister Bettina was the first to go. Whilst her daddy and mummy lay in bed getting’ worse, Savannah stayed very close to them, and I feared she would catch it too, but she never did, and me neither, nor even the babies. The Good Lord was watching us.”

Cynical John privately wonders why the Lord, if he is so good, did not choose to watch the rest of them too, but he does not say so.

“After Savannah's daddy passed, Miz Meredith, she knew she didn’t have long left neither. Miz Meredith, she calls me into her room privately and tells me about the family, and how she is entrusting her dear daughter Savannah and the little twins to me. I was cryin’, and kept tryin’ to tell Miz Meredith she will be fine, but she knows different. After we speak of it, Miz Meredith calls Savannah into her room and tells her how much she loves her and that from now on Lucy will be taking care of her. I was right proud of that, John! Savannah knew her Momma was dying, so she sat still and just listened. Savannah with tears in her eyes hugs her mother and tells her she loves her. Miz Meredith smiles and with her last breath tells Savannah, I love you too, and then she slips away. At the funeral I thought that child’s heart would break, she was that tore up! Poor thing, she lost near everybody!”

“But she had you, didn’t she?” said John softly.

Lucy smiled a little. “Yes, she had me.”

“And she has had you every since,” said John.

“Yes, and she always will, and I too will have her, John. I don’t know if you can understand, bein’ from a different place…”

“No, Lucy, I see it, ‘course I do! You was right to stay and take care of her!”

“Well, it’s true that once I was here on the plantation, there wasn’t nowhere else really to go, but I has never wanted to leave Savannah. Course, I coulda stayed in Baton Rouge that time…”

“Coloreds is not treated so good in Baton Rouge, Lucy!”

  “Is that so?”

“It’s so everywhere, Lucy! You were better off here where you were loved!”

“Yes, that be it, John!” says Lucy, glad he understands.

“But does that mean there can never be no more room in your heart for lovin’ anybody else?”

Lucy looks into John’s beautiful brown eyes and blushes. She has never admired a black man so much before. Then she looks down at the table and tells him the whole story of what happened with the cruel uncles that should a been beat for what they done to Savannah and her.

“Damn!” John exploded when she was finished. “That makes me want to tear them limb from limb!”

“Well, the Rebs done took care of that!” says Lucy with satisfaction.

“Well, I hope they made a right good job of it!” says John viciously.

Lucy looks at John with softness in her eyes. She is liking him more by the minute.

John looks at Lucy meaningfully. “You women folk need to make sure no man can ever hurt you like that again!”

“Well, I don’t worry that Miss Lucy will be havin’ nobody more like that move into this house! Why, these men who is our neighbors now is afraid of her! I have catched them lookin’ at her sideways and scootin’ away fast when they sees her walkin’ cross the yard in their direction, carrying her gun! And she will carry it, too, right out in the open to the henhouse and back to the front door if need be! I has seen her do it! That don’t bother her none at all!”

“Do say!” John laughs, and Lucy laughs with him at the picture, which is a true enough picture of bold little Savannah in her new role as head of the house.

“Well, I reckon William has got his hands full with her!” guffaws John. “He better watch his P’s and Q’s!”

John and Lucy have a right good laugh together at that picture too, and with their laughter, a painful memory is put to rest. It is a mighty good feeling to Lucy to feel safe like this with John and William both in the house. This is as it should be, she thinks, where a woman can laugh and not be afraid, with good, kind men she can trust and befriend—and yes, even love--under her own roof. John feels it too, and it gives the both of them some quiet food for thought.

Back upstairs William is trying to make love to Savannah again. She sits up and reminds him of his friend downstairs, but William coaxes her back down onto the bed. “If I know my friend, he is mighty happy at the kitchen table, so don’t worry! And he is probably mighty happy in Lucy’s company, too!”

That takes Savannah by surprise for a second. “Well, yes, I reckon so,” she says slowly. “But what about the General?”

William says, “He said he would be back in four days and it only has been three, so worry not, my love, by the time he returns John will be gone and we can make our plan. I’m not well enough to leave yet.”

“Oh no, you’re not well enough to leave yet!” she agrees with a smile. And then she melts into his kiss.

Downstairs Lucy is now sweeping the floor while John still eats. John says to Lucy, “How close are William and Savannah?” Lucy stops mooning at him and pulls herself up a bit. Lucy thinks to herself, I do not know if I can trust him with the truth! Maybe it’s better off if I say nothing.

“Savannah and William is not close at all! She tends to him because he is ill, and when he is better he will leave here, and Miss Savannah’s life can go back to normal.”

John smiles and then starts to chuckle. Offended, Lucy looks at him sharply but does not meet his eye. John clears his throat and starts to say something, then thinks better of it. So he nods his head and continues to eat.

Meanwhile, back upstairs, Savannah and William are continuing to make love. William caresses her body ever so softly. As he does this Savannah moans gently with pleasure. William begins to kiss her stomach and moves ever so slowly up to her breasts. He begins to suckle her right nipple and Savannah moans again with more passion in her voice. William continues up to her neck and gently kisses her left side and Savannah giggles. William looks into Savannah’s eyes and they begin to kiss again. Savannah rolls over on top of William, begins to kiss him on his neck, and begins to move slowly down his body. William moans gently as Savannah reaches his manhood. Savannah begins to move her hand ever so gently up and down on the shaft of his manhood. William again moans with great pleasure.

Savannah moves slowly up to William’s lips and begins to kiss him. William rolls over on top of Savannah and gently enters Savannah. He slowly moves up and down while holding on to Savannah. Savannah moans in passions and puts her legs around William’s hips and her arms around him to sit up. William caresses her hair as they continue to make love. They both moan with such great ecstasy. The passions t
hey both are sharing are so amazing.

As they continue to make love upstairs, the sound of soft moaning floats down the stairwell. At the kitchen table, John pauses for a moment from eating and turns his head to listen, gazing at the doorway from the kitchen to the front of the house.

“Now let me see, Miss Lucy. If I know William like I think I do, the old dog lives here and you and Miss Savannah are taking good care of him!” John chuckles. “It figures William would fall for a southern woman. He is a hopeless romantic!”

Seeing it is hopeless, Lucy finally breaks down and admits it.

“Oh, so is she! And you are right, the two of them is as happy together up there as two pigs in shit!”

John grins at Lucy and they both look in each other’s eyes with suppressed laughter. Finally they both burst out laughing. It’s ridiculous to pretend it’s not happening, and Lucy’s heart is telling her maybe it is time to trust someone again. John is as agreeable a black man as she has ever met. She sighs a big sigh. “Maybe, John Pride, it is time for us to think of ourselves and not them for a change!” she says. “You sit right there, soldier boy, and Lucy will bring you a treat!”

John eyes pop open wide and he flashes dimples, very pleased to hear this talk coming from her. “Whoa now, woman! What you got in mind?” he asks, laughing.

Lucy is entranced. It has been way too long that she had had any fun or pleasure out of life. She giggles and wriggles with flirty pleasure.

“Now don’t get your hopes up too high, solder! But it just happen I got a lovely apple pie sittin’ on the windowsill in the next room! It’s a treat for after dinner, but I reckon I might cut it now for a special guest like you!”

John is pleased, but not as pleased as he hopes to be later. “Oh whoa now! Well, I reckon I won’t say no to no treats comin’ from you, Miss Lucy!” he teases.

All blushes and smiles, Lucy gets the pie and plates out with a lightness of heart she has not felt in years. Carrying the goods across the room, she stops and reflects out loud, “Thanks be to the Lord who has been good to us, today!”

“Yes, ma’am indeed!” says John, spreading appreciation on Lucy as thick as he can. “He surely has, and I am mighty grateful!”

Lucy looks at him with a bright smile as she cuts the pie. How long has it been since she has trusted anybody but the people in this house? It’s like being back in the world of the living again.

Back in the bedroom William and Savannah have finished making love. Savannah turns and looks William in the eyes and says, “I never in the world thought I could fall in love with a Yankee!”

William, still looking into Savannah’s eyes, says, “Well, it’s not so bad is it?” He gently caresses the cheek on her face as he smiles.

Savannah replies, “No, no! It isn’t; it’s more wonderful than I could ever imagine.”

They kiss and fall asleep holding one another. And this southern belle is happier on this glorious winter morning than she ever dreamed she would be.

Meanwhile the fanatical Confederate General and his men are now only north of the plantation and should arrive by midmorning. He tells one of his men he looks forward to seeing Miss Savannah again. He wonders if he could make her his bride. The General yells to his men “ONWARD MEN!” and they continue on their journey back to Savannah’s front door.

  Chapter 6

Lucy is still cleaning the kitchen while William eats the beef stew. Lucy walks back to the door and looks out across the fields. She stands still for a moment and begins to think about how this will all play out. She is worried about Savannah falling in love with that Yankee William. She also goes over how there is another eating her beef stew, which she doesn’t know he can eat so much in one sitting. Then she starts to think about how the General is to return soon. What then, what will happen when he does return? Lucy takes the broom and swatch the floor with it. John looks up from his dish and asks “Lucy you ok?” Lucy replies, “Yes, I am just bothered about all that is going on here.” John laughs hearty and replies “do not worry so much I mean what can happen.”

Lucy stares at John, then answers, “More than you knows, sir! More than you knows.” Lucy continues to sweep the floor and worrying. Upstairs William and Savannah awake from their short nap and look at one another for a bit in silence. Savannah sits up in bed and asks William, “What will we do when the General does return?” William sits up, puts his arms around her, and says “We will think of something by the time he come back don’t worry” then he leans in and kisses her softly. When they are done kissing Savannah gets up and puts on her robe. She looks over at William and says, “I should go down and check on your friend John and Lucy.” William chuckles and say Yes maybe you should it has been very quiet with them. Savannah giggles and says “Yes Lucy might have already chased him off he ate us out of all our food.” She walks over to William kisses once again then leaves the room. She descends the stair and finds that John is still at the table eating as he was before. Then she sees Lucy sweeping the floor.

Savannah walks past John and he grunts hello through his mouth being full. Savannah smiles and says hi. Then Savannah goes over to Lucy and asks her “what is the matter?” She says, “Miss Savannah this whole thing with these Yankees being here is worrying me. The General is to return any day now and what then?” Savannah walks up to Lucy, kisses her on the forehead, and says, “Dear Lucy, all will be well. Don’t you worry yourself now, you hear?” Savannah walks away to get some food for her and William. Lucy still standing there cannot help but feel as this is going to be a lot worse before it is all over. Now meanwhile the General and his men are only 30 miles from Savannahs plantation.

The General asks one of his men “did you notice anyhow Miss Savannah looked at me while we were there?” The soldier replies “Well Sir to be honest it did not look like she was much very interested in you.” The General looks sternly at the soldier and says “what are you doing up here riding next to me soldier get your self back in line.” The soldier says, “Yes Sir” and falls back. The General says to himself “I saw how she looked at me with adornment in her eyes and if she didn’t well she will when I propose to her.” They continue on there way to the plantation with no clue of what is to come.

Savannah makes a plate of food for her William and goes back upstairs. She walks into the room and places the tray of food down beside the bed where William is laying. She sits on the bed and softly whispers to William that there is some food here for us. William smiles at her, and just cannot stop staring at her and how beautiful she is this morning. Savannah says, “I talk to Lucy and she is worried.” William says “what, that John has eaten you out of house and home?” He chuckles hearty. Savannah pushes his hand away from her and giggles softly. Savannah says “no about everything that has happened and about the General on his way back.” William sees this is bothering Savannah deeply. He gets out of bed, walks over to where Savannah is puts his arms around her, and pulls her in close. He whispers to her. “You know it will all work out you will see and so will Lucy.” Savannah says, “I hope you are right for all our sakes.”

He turns her face to face with him and says, “I promise you it will.” He kisses her deeply and she responds with a deep sigh of desire. Now back down stairs Lucy just could not help but feel a chill in the air she mumbles to herself when I feel the air as chilled as this I know there is trouble coming. John still eating almost done tells Lucy to stop her worrying, come, and sit with him to keep him company while he finishes up. Lucy does not want to but does. John looks at Lucy and says, “When I am done here I will go up and speak with William and we will come up with a plan.” Lucy shakes her head and says, “I sure hope you do John for all our sakes especially Miss Savannah’s.”

John continues to finish his meal. Back upstairs William and Savannah passionately embraced. Savannah stops William and tells him maybe you should talk to john and see if he has any ideas on what to do. William still seeing the worry in Savannahs eyes says, “Ok I will go a
nd talk to john after I clean up and eat something.”

He gently caresses her cheek with his hand and kisses her lips softly to reassure her. Savannah smiles softly and says “Ok that will be good.” William picks up a towel and goes down the hall to wash up. Savannah walks over to the window, looks out upon the plantation, and holds herself feeling a chill in the air. Savannah says to herself, ”I hope this all does work out cause if it doesn’t we all could lose in the end.” Meanwhile down stairs Lucy is sitting with john watching him finish her meal she made. John takes last bite of the meal leans back in his seat and says, “Lucy I have to say that’s one good meal. It filled me fine.” Lucy says “Tis glad you liked it Sir.” John looks at her and says, “Please call me John.” Lucy smile and takes his plate away to be washed.

John continues to lean back in the chair and asks “Lucy Do you think it would be all right for me to go up and talk to William now?” Lucy replies, “Yes John but I would knock first before entering the room.” John says ok gets up from the table to begin going up to William’s room. Meanwhile the General and his men are now only 20 miles from Savannahs plantation. The General is growing impatient with his men and the factor that the solider maybe right about Savannah not feeling anything for him. The General begins to think how he could woo Miss Savannah when he gets back to the plantation.

He looks to his left and sees the same solider again. He say “Didn’t I tell you to fall back solider?” The soldier replies “yes sir but I have found my way back up her in front with you sir.” The General says, “Well since you are here soldier tell me, how would you woo such a creature as Miss Savannah?” The soldier thinks for a moment and replies “well sir I would have a meal done for her with flowers candles soft music and would compliment her every chance I got.” The General thinks about this.
