What does it mean?

  I do not know.

“So, can I?” Keandre asked. “Can Ben and I play together later? He said he’d protect me from the wolves. Said he’d show me how fast he can run.”

  Please. Please.

  Sarid shook his head.

  The demon whined.

“That’s not a good idea, Keandre. The Oth—Ben only likes you and your mom. He’s not very friendly with anyone else. I don’t want people to get hurt.”

Keandre’s shoulders slumped. “Okay,” he sighed. Then raised his head. “But what if he promises to be good. Like makes a pinky promise he won’t hurt anyone.” Pause. “Unless they’re hurting me,” he added quickly.

Sarid cocked his head. “Did Ben just tell you that?” Did you just think that?

  Yes.

  “Yes.”

“Do you ever hear anyone else like you hear Ben?”

“Yeah.” A look crossed over his face. “They’re not very nice sometimes.”

  “The people you hear?”

  Keandre nodded.

“You know you’re safe here, right? I’ll protect you. And Mr. Gabe, Mr. Lucas, Mr. Cade, and Mr. Drew.” For some reason the psychometric Behn from Sept Seven had really taken to the boy. Sarid even found him playing on the floor with him when Keandre had brought over some toys.

“I know. And Ben will, too. He said he’s stronger than anyone. And he’ll kill anyone that hurts me.”

“I need to have a talk with Ben about what he should and shouldn’t say to you,” Asjhone said tightly. She had a tight grip on Sarid’s shoulder, her knees pressed into his back. “Keandre, it’s almost time to eat dinner. Why don’t you go help Ms. Martha set the table?”

  “Okay.”

Asjhone spoke as soon as Keandre was gone. “Oh, my God, Sarid. What does this mean? How can he hear the demon? And who else is he hearing? Other demons?” Her voice was rising.

Sarid pulled her into his arms. “I don’t know. But I do know the demon—Ben—and I will protect him with our lives.” He drew her head back, cupped her cheeks, pressed his mouth against hers. “We’ll figure it out. I promise.”

“Okay.” She exhaled shakily. “Okay. I trust you.”

He leaned his forehead against hers. “You and Keandre came into my life when I expected death. I’ll spend the rest of my days striving to be worthy of your trust and love.”

“You already are,” she whispered and kissed him.

  Epilogue

The Behn entered the temple. With his head down, he avoided eye contact and weaved his way through the crowd to the back of the room. He didn’t want to be spotted, though with the number of Followers around him that wouldn’t be an issue.

The call to prayer sounded and the Behn joined the other worshippers. At the conclusion he was on his knees. “Peace be upon you,” he recited.

Silence ensued for a brief moment then a figure rose from the front of the room. He pivoted to address the gathering. “People of Turkey, I’m humbled before you. Allah has sent a message for his Followers.” He paused. “The devil lives among you. It’s time we band together to destroy him.” At this, images appeared on the wall behind the figure.

The first one was of a man with long black hair that fell to the middle of his back, scars near his left temple. His eyes were glowing blue, long fangs easily seen through his open mouth, as he wielded a large curved sword. Gasps and shocked cries spread through the room.

Next a man with dark skin, deep grooves on each cheek. In slowmo, the man morphed into a ten-foot monster with long claws and a skull for a face.

The third, a man with brown wavy hair, long enough to touch the collar of his shirt. The edges of his form began to blur. Faster, then faster until a wolf stood in his place.

A fourth image. A fifth. Again and again. Each of a different man, changing into other supernatural beings.

“These are the devil’s workers,” the speaker said. “They are the ones who do his bidding. They are the reason why you have hate and crime. I’ve come to band us together. Once we eradicate them all, Allah, the Creator, has promised to restore the world to what it was before, The Garden of Eden. A home the Creator will gladly visit. A place that will be acceptable enough for him to place His feet.”

Cries shouted. Hands raised in the air.

“But first we must get ready. We must take out those who wish to see the devil in His place.” The images continued flashing behind the speaker. He turned, watched in silence with the rest of the worshippers. When the feed faded, he spoke once more. “The time has come to change this world into a home the Creator will visit. We start by killing the demons who walk the earth and we’ll end it when the devil has been destroyed once and for all. Can I count on your help?” Shouts rang up from around the room.

The Behn quietly slipped out of the temple. Half a mile away, he pulled out his phone.

  It rang, and then, “Yeah?”

“Cade, we have a problem. A big problem.”
