  Dan groggily opened his eyes. He was lying on a white bench in a large room. There was no sign of Lithia. Four guards were standing in front of the opening into another space. He could see activity in there, aliens moving about quickly, blue ones like Gaia and Lithia and even taller grey ones. Sitting up slowly to test the guards reactions, he began to swing his feet to the floor. He was wearing a white gown, not unlike a hospital operating one. A voice spoke in his mind and he froze.

  We do not want to hurt you. But we cannot allow you to be free up here. It would not be...good.

  The soothing voice was definitely male, he turned to see the source of it standing behind him. It was a tall, grey alien, with smooth skin and no discernible features or genitalia, just long limbs and a large head. It's dark eyes were boring into his mind.

  Are you the Higher? Dan asked him. He detected a note of surprise in the alien's reply.

  No, we do his bidding. You are unusually strong, for a human. Your name is Dan.

  Dan took a deep breath and tried a question.

  What have you done with..my captor? I felt sorry for her. I hope she doesn't get into trouble.

  The alien betrayed no emotion in its soothing voice.

  The blue female who brought you here is of no consequence to you Dan. She will be returned to her original station.

  Damn it, thought Dan, I've got to find a way to get her out of here. He knew the alien was probably reading his thoughts. Suddenly, he tried a new trick. Leaping to his feet, he took the alien by surprise and crossed the floor to him quickly. The grey one tried to spring away but perhaps it was not used to humans giving any resistance. Dan felt cold, steel fingers trying to pry into his mind to stop him, but he summoned a mental image of a blue veil which was his impenetrable defence. He grabbed the alien by the wrist and slapped his other hand to his forehead.

  Where is she?! He tried to see what was in the grey's mind. Suddenly an image, a female blue alien floating naked in an upright cylindrical tube swam into his mind. A corridor led to this room, it was some sort of cryo-chamber. He needed to know where, even as the guards were pulling him away, he tried one more time.

  Where?!

  He got a glimpse of the spacecraft dock and a corridor leading away to the left. He stopped resisting the guards and went their direction instead, accelerating as he turned around and tore free from their grasp. The icy fingers that were trying to hold him up were no match for the mind gift that Gaia and Lithia had given him, now he needed to find Lithia and rescue her. He raced away through the large room, scattering unheeding aliens in his wake as he headed for the docking area.

  Gaia was standing still in the large room as Aurelia watched her anxiously. She seemed to be in a trance, and Aurelia didn't know if this was good or not. Suddenly, Gaia spoke.

  They are captured! It is no good! Her voice was full of anguish, and Aurelia reached out and put a hand on her arm.

  What shall we do? Should we try to rescue them? She asked. Gaia gave no reply, she was thinking and listening. Sensing that Dan was in grave danger, Aurelia formed a plan quickly.

  Gaia, listen to me. We need to get on board. You have to pretend that you are bringing me on as a captive female. I'll pretend to be in a trance. You need to get us on there!

  Gaia turned and nodded at Aurelia. They headed for the wall that opened into the mother ship. Aurelia steeled herself. This is suicide, she thought. Gaia's hand hovered above the button that released the walls.

  Ready? She asked. Aurelia started to nod but then both their minds were split by a cry from somewhere else.

  Gaia? Gaia? Can you hear me!? It was Dan, he was near.

  Dan! Where are you? Aurelia replied, her hopes lifting.

  No time! Gaia, I need you to give me directions to the cryo-chambers, or whatever they are...Lithia....capture....I need

  They didn't catch all of it, he seemed to be running and mentally distracted at this point. Gaia tried to send the directions through as a constant beam of thought, over and over. She didn't get a reply and knew that she would be alerting the mother ship to her renegade mind, but if she stopped she would not see Lithia again.

  Dan had just run straight over two guards at the end of the main chamber, just outside the Gaia's ship. They put up very little resistance, their presence was just for show he thought, they had no weapons when they relied on mind control to subjugate their human captives. Now he was employing all his previous skills and strength as a junior running-back to get to where he wanted to. He had a set of directions imprinted in his head, Gaia could stop now, and he quickly found the room he was looking for.

  Twenty or thirty of these chambers were there, about half of them full. He slowed down now, the drone workers in there melting away at the sight of this rampaging human. He looked along the line of filled tubes, each had a female blue alien in there, all similar, but slightly different size and shapes. They were all naked, and all very alluring, their hands down to their sides with the palms out and their attractive eyes all shut. Some had large breasts, some smaller, all had been designed to appeal greatly to the human male.

  I could get used to this place, he thought. Then he arrived at Lithia's tube. There was no doubt about it, he just knew it was her.

  “How do you get this thing open?” He asked himself, and looked about. There was no-one else in here, and no form of controls on the tube. He set about trying to find a way in.

  Gaia realised that the guards were approaching her ship. We have to do something, she thought. She knew that the culture of the aliens on board were not used to violence and direct action, just mind-control, but she herself was unsure how to proceed. Aurelia had been reading her thoughts and picking some up from Dan too. She thought she knew just what to do.

  Let me handle this, honey. Just follow my lead!

  She slapped her hand down hard on the release button and as the walls slid down she raced into the large docking chamber. Gaia sprinted after her. They headed directly for the exit, the guards blocking their way. Gaia watched with a fearful realization that Aurelia was not going to stop. She watched as the blonde girl charged into the first guard and with a double-handed push, sent him sprawling on his rear. The other was not reacting quickly enough and as Gaia ran through she turned and stared at him with as much menace as she could muster. She could learn actual violence off the girl in due course.

  They ran through the corridors, not encountering any resistance, and shot into the cryo-chamber. Dan whirled round ready to fight, but the melting look of pure relief on his face made Aurelia want to kiss him all over several times.

  Quick! How do you open these things? He asked Gaia.

  I'll do it. Get ready to catch her. Dan waited as Gaia entered the control area and started touching the screens. With a hiss and a deluge of liquid, the whole tube ascended upwards, leaving only the base with all the tubes attached. Lithia slumped forward but Dan caught her neatly over one shoulder, getting soaked to the skin in the process.

  “Come on, lets go!” Cr
ied Aurelia, and they all turned and ran back through the doorway and out into the corridor.

  As they approached the ship, they could sense a presence, a sort of rumbling in the mind like lots of traffic.

  “Hold on!” Whispered Dan, and he gave Lithia to Gaia to hold. Peering around the corner he could see dozens of aliens, blue guards and lots of greys.

  “Holy shit!” He hissed, “How do we get through all that?”

  Aurelia had joined him at the wall. She looked up at him with a look of pure defiance.

  “There's only one way.”

  He looked at her now, trying to be tough and doing a damn good job about it. She looked every bit the space adventurer, he thought; action-heroine blouse, and hot legs all the way up to her chin. Damn, I need to get her naked and...

  Save it for later, big boy! She flashed a hundred and fifty watt smile up at him. You might just be lucky enough. But before she could think of the next thing he was off, charging round the corner with a battle-cry to wake all the heavens.

  Aurelia watched Dan with her mind trying to catch up as he bowled through the first line of aliens. The greys seemed to be standing there, she was sure they were trying a mind control on them. Maybe they were on the wrong frequency. Whatever was happening, the blues were no match for Dan and Aurelia. They charged a path and then Dan tore back to help Gaia drag the stricken alien. Within twenty seconds they were aboard the craft.

  The walls rose up, the aliens outside seemed to be watching and waiting for something to happen, and Gaia was a blur of movement. She set the controls almost instantly and then dashed off to carry her friend to the medical area.

  As the ship took off, Dan waved goodbye to the watching aliens then followed Gaia back into the bowels of the ship.

  Gaia was working frantically, Lithia was laying cold and lifeless on the seat. Two tubes protruded from the back of her head. Gaia gently pulled them out and attached various devices to Lithia's torso. She ran to the controls and furiously tapped away at the screens. Nothing happened.

  Aurelia held her breath. A minute passed. Dan found he couldn't watch, he was stricken for his friend. She would willingly have given her life for him, now he wished he could do the same. Another five minutes passed. Then Lithia opened her eyes.

  When her eyes flickered open, the three of them hugged each other, Dan cementing his forehead to the girls.

  We made it! We made it! Aurelia planted kisses on both of them, overjoyed and brimming with tears. Dan went over to Lithia.

  “Hold on, something's not right here.” He could see by the way Lithia was just staring ahead blankly that they had failed to fully bring her round.

  Lithia got straight up, and ignoring them all, went over to the control area.

  “Whoa whoa whoa darlin'. You've had a big deal, need to rest it out!” Dan went over to his friend and started to pull her back. She was tapping things out on a screen.

  “What, that quickly?” Exclaimed Aurelia, “Does it happen that fast?”

  Sometimes it doesn't take much. A simple reset is all that is needed.

  Dan was thoughtful. The hive mind is what you said you feared, right? And you need to be individual, right? He turned to Gaia. What is it that makes you stay individual? Wait, I think I know.

  He turned back towards Lithia and pulled her away from the screens. Distractedly she tried to turn back. He grasped her face in his hands and reached up and gave her perfect lips a long, deep kiss. She seemed to shudder and shake her head but nothing changed.

  “Lithia. Lithia!” Dan commanded. No good.

  The stars endlessly continued into the distance. Dan breathed out, contentedly. This was good stuff, whatever it was, he could feel himself relaxing as he sat down next to Aurelia.
