Wanton Desire

And then suddenly she felt the baby slide out of her much easier than the first. She said a silent prayer of thanks and fell back against the pillows. Slowly her concern about being strong enough to handle a second birth faded and her senses returned to normal.

This child cried immediately and Willie smiled. “Another boy.”

“Is he all right?” Emma asked, her exhaustion making her slightly dizzy.

  “He’s perfect.”

Emma looked over at Joe and smiled. “Two. I can’t believe it. I don’t know if I’m up for two. Especially boys. They’re going to run me silly as they get older.”

Joe beamed. “Sons. I love it. I’m sure they’ll be a handful but you’ll have plenty of help with them. Are you all right?”

  She nodded. “Just tired.”

“There’s not a third one, is there?” Joe joked as he glanced over at Willie. But then a nervous look crossed his face.

“I think that’s it.” Willie cleaned up the baby and brought him over for Emma to hold. “Did you have a second name picked out?”

“Not for a boy,” Emma said, gazing down at her second son. Twins. The first one had little tufts of dark-brown hair. This boy’s hair was a medium brown. Other than that they looked identical. Still, she wasn’t sure if they truly were identical or not. Neither had opened their eyes yet, so their eye color would be a surprise and something she looked forward to seeing.

Emma shifted on the mattress, trying to get more comfortable as Willie massaged her abdomen until she expelled the afterbirth. Emma marveled at how quickly and efficiently Willie worked, cleaning up what she could as she went.

Joe’s forehead crinkled as he looked down at his second son. “What should we call him? Any ideas?”

Willie laughed. “I think it should be obvious. Of course, he’s Joe Junior.”

Joe smiled, then said, “Won’t that get a little confusing, keeping the two of us apart.”

“So you’ll call him Joseph or Joey or JJ.”

“I like it,” Emma said. “What should we use for a middle name?”

  “How about Davenport?” Joe suggested.

“Davenport?” A look of confusion crossed Willie’s face.

“That’s Skylar’s and Beth’s maiden name,” she explained. “They’d love that. Joseph Davenport Jackson. I like it. It sounds just as impressive as William Bray Jackson.”

“And we can call him JD,” Joe said.

Emma laughed. This poor boy was going to get so confused with all the names everyone wanted to call him.

Joe tugged on a strand of her hair. His heart still hadn’t stopped pounding in his chest. He should have been here with her from the beginning. “Why didn’t you tell me you were in labor this morning? I wouldn’t have left you.”

“Well, I wasn’t really sure. I’ve been having false labor pains so often lately that I just thought that’s what it was. Until the pains got worse, then I knew it was more than that. You’d already left by then. Sorry.”

He kissed her gently on the lips. He loved this woman more than he thought possible. And now he had sons to love too. “I can’t believe we have two boys. I’m happier than I ever knew I could be.”

“I can’t wait to let Skylar and Beth know,” Emma said. “Skylar has a new daughter and we have two beautiful sons. Along with Colton and Josie, our families are growing so fast. I know Beth is hoping for another little one soon too.”

“Is she expecting yet?” Willie asked.

  “Not yet. But they’re trying.”

Joe chuckled. “I’ll bet they are.”

Emma slapped him playfully on the shoulder, which made him chuckle even more. She looked at Willie. “When the doctor arrives, you can send her away.”

“Are you sure that you don’t want her to check you out?”

“Maybe it’s a good idea.” Joe looked at Emma in concern. If anything ever happened to her, he didn’t know what he’d do.

“I’m fine. Really. Willie did wonderfully well in taking care of me…us.”

Willie smiled, then headed for the door. “All right. I’ll give you two a little time alone together. I’ll come back later and tidy the room and help you get cleaned and changed, Emma.”

Emma nodded but her eyes had shifted back to her son and she seemed captivated by the boy. Joe understood the feeling. “I’ll help her get cleaned up,” he said in a soft voice as he rose and went to pick up his firstborn from the crib. “You can relax, Willie. Thanks for your help.”

When Joe turned toward his sister, he saw that Willie had gone and closed the door behind her. With William in his arms, he gazed into Emma’s eyes as he sat back beside her. She looked so beautiful, even as disheveled as she was.

“How did we get this blessed?” she asked.

“I don’t know. But I’m going to love and cherish all of you until there’s no longer any breath left in my body. That’s a promise, for now and always.”
