"Agreed. You can count me out," Liza said.
"You're a part of this, whether you want to be or not," Eli said. "It's too late, Liza."
Everyone was quiet.
All the hurt. I swallowed hard. All the lies. I wasn't made of steel, because I felt like my body was burning to ash along with V's apartment. I breathed in and let the feeling of fire expand in my body.
I felt V's hand slip into mine. Eli placed his hand on my shoulder.
"Fine," Liza said from behind me. "Luckily Athena's hardware was in here. We'll need a new headquarters."
The smell of smoke filled my lungs. And I realized just how much I loved the feeling of fire. Flames were empowering. I was going to burn everything in my path until this ended. Maybe Jane was right. Maybe my mom was a villain. Maybe I was a villain. My flames had already lit my friends afire. They'd burn. They'd burn because of me.
I held my breath, letting the warm feeling of flames lap against my lungs. For one second.
Jane thought it would end with me. But I was still here. I was still breathing.
For two seconds.
I stared out at the chaos.
For three seconds.
There was only one way to stop a fire. You had to cut it off from oxygen. Don needed to stop breathing. That was the only answer I could see.
For four seconds.
I needed to stop running. I needed to face him head on. Just like he said, it was my move.
For five seconds.
I closed my eyes, and all I could see were flames.
