Love's Cold Burn

Andrew looked up at her surprised.
‘My friend Charlotte hasn’t had a date all year and she’s a bit down. I told her I knew somebody who may go on a blind date with her.’
They both waited for a reaction. Andrew was a bit slow. After a couple of seconds, he said, ‘Me?’
‘Yeah. Why not Andrew? She’s a nice girl.’ Pink Socks raised her eyebrows to push for an answer.
‘Excellent. I’d love to,’ he replied. He couldn’t help a small smile. Tom patted him on the back.
‘We’re late for lectures. You coming?’ asked Tom.
‘Thanks. I’ll just stop here for a bit though. I’ll see you later.’ Tom and Pink Socks walked away holding hands. Andrew felt pleased for Tom. Andrew’s confidence was coming back. He had expected too much of Tom. He must try to be a better friend from now on. He remembered Charlotte. She was a nice looking girl. He was already looking forward to his blind date.
There weren’t many people walking past now. They were mostly in lectures, but the odd straggler walked past.
One of them was Hugh Grundy. He saw Andrew sitting alone on the bench. He hadn’t seen him since Tom had taken Pink Socks from under his nose and here he was, on his own, a perfect opportunity to poke fun. Hugh strolled up and sat down next to Andrew. ‘Andrew. I understand you have had a small problem with Tom. Is there anything I can help with?’
Andrew slowly turned to face Hugh, looked him straight in the eye and spoke with the assured confidence of a young man who believed in himself. ‘Fuck off Hugh.’
