“You wouldn’t dare,” she whispered out of her like a prayer.
Too bad Killian thrilled at playing the devil. “Honey, there isn’t anything I wouldn’t dare.”
Obviously not a quitter, Rachel swallowed. This time, her voice came out with a little sound to it, even if it did tremble. “I’ll write a story.”
“About what?” Killian smirked. “About how you got so wet you needed a cock and it didn’t matter to you that we were screwing on the sheriff’s desk?”
“Deputy, listen to me very carefully.” Her voice had gone all soft, husky with the desire he could smell thickening in the air. “If you don’t let me go right now, I’ll make sure the only place willing to give you a badge is the mall in Dothan.”
“Threaten all you want.” Killian ground himself against the small rubbing motions Rachel’s hips had started to make. Her body was dancing now, trying to lure him in closer. “I know what you want.”
“And isn’t that every rapist’s excuse?”
“What the hell?” Just the use of that word had Killian jerking back with a scowl as he stared at the woman in horrified shock. “I ain’t forcing here, lady. I’m seducing.”
“I fail to see the difference when I’m being held against my will,” Rachel snapped back.
“Not against your will,” Killian retorted, but his indignant steam ran out as he tried to follow his own reasoning. “Just against your permission.”
She snorted at that, backing up toward the gate as if he might attack her. The nervous motion pissed him off all the more because he knew for a fact that he had her wet already. That was the problem with stick-up-their-asses types.
Fine, she wants to do this proper-like, I’ll play it nice…right up until I have her ass tied to my bed. Then it’ll be game on.
“I have never in all my life—”
“I have no doubt, Miss Adams,” Killian cut her off. If he wanted to come out the victor, he needed to start using some of that charm his mother always warned women about. “I offer you my sincerest apologies and can only express to you how overcome I was by your—”
“Don’t make fun of me.” Rachel stiffened straight up. “I am not here to be the butt of your jokes just because you’re having a boring day, Deputy.”
“I’m not joking,” Killian grunted, feeling a little insulted that she dared to reject his apology. “I’m saying I’m attracted, and I let—”
“To what?”
He really hated to be interrupted. “To you.”
“Are you saying you’re attracted to me?”
Her incredulousness irritated Killian. “Yes, to you. Why the hell is that so hard to believe?”
“Everything out of your mouth is hard to believe, Deputy,” Rachel snapped. “You’re obviously so full of shit, only a half-wit would take you seriously. It seems more likely to me that you’re a bored asshole looking for somebody to fuck with because you’ve gotten tired of playing with yourself.
“Trust me, honey, you haven’t got nothing that I find even the slightest bit entertaining.” Her eyes dropped down to what Killian knew to be an impressive bulge. Hell, his dick was putting on the full-course strut for her, and all she did was snicker. “Well, maybe a tiny bit amusing.”
Oh, the hell she didn’t. Killian’s outraged shock held him still as she swept back through the lobby and almost escaped. That wouldn’t be happening. Not until he had her on her knees, begging. Then he’d leave her wanting. She’s going to ache for the rest of her life.
Rachel Allen would never see it coming because Killian knew how to get his revenge. Latching on to her hand as it reached for her coat on the rack, he played it like he was actually sorry, like she’d taught him his lesson.
“Listen, Miss Allen, why don’t we start all over.”
“I’m sure you’d like to, but I don’t see much point,” Rachel snarled, yanking her hand free. “I have things to accomplish today, none of which include putting up with you.”
“Well, what about having me bend over backwards for you?” Killian offered, taking her dark glower as a positive sign. She had stopped to glare at him, so he pressed in his best pleading tone. “I’m serious. Give me a half hour to show you the station and my best side. Then you can decide if you want to rip me a new one in tomorrow’s paper or have dinner with me.”
“But all of your charm will be fake, right?”
“Oh, absolutely.” Killian nodded. “But I’m really good at fake charm. Now will you allow me to escort you, my lady?”
Rachel hesitated, obviously torn. Clearly, he annoyed the crap out of her, but Killian suspected he also excited her in that same strange way she was exciting him. He felt kind of like a cat that had discovered a mouse to play with. Rachel probably thought she was the cat.
She sure gave him the arrogant grin of one as she finally rested her hand on the arm he’d offered. “The ‘my lady’ is a bit much. Don’t you think, Deputy?”
Chapter 1
Friday, March 28th
Adam Whendon stared up at the stars and wondered if Cole Jackson had gotten himself killed yet. They hadn’t gotten a call on the radio, but the Davis brothers had been smart enough to hide the body. It would be a matter of waiting to see if the cocky son of a bitch ever showed back up in town.
Dumbass. There appeared to be a lot of those running around lately. Unfortunately, Adam happened to be tied to one by a lifelong friendship that that left him little choice but to put up with Killian’s stupid ideas. Cole had lost his head over Patton Jones. Alex had lost his head over Sweetness.
Killian had thought it would be fun to seduce the sheriff’s latest addiction away from him. Well, the cocky son of a bitch wasn’t laughing now.
“I cannot believe we’re stuck on patrol duty,” Killian complained, kicking a rock over the uneven ground. “This sucks.”
“I told you Alex would find a way to make us suffer for luring Sweetness away from him,” Adam retorted without thought. They’d had this conversation about a hundred times before they’d gone ahead and done the dumb thing. So Killian’s constant whining lacked a certain amount of honesty.
“Yeah, well, she was sweet,” Killian muttered, appearing to concentrate on kicking his second stone farther than Adam. He came up short with a sigh. “Still, it isn’t right. I mean, we’re supposed to share. That’s sort of the motto of the club, and Alex punishing us for having a little fun with his plaything goes against the grain.”
“Hey.” Killian straightened up with a sudden burst of energy, turning on Adam as if he’d just gotten struck by the smart fairy. “You don’t think Alex actually liked the girl?”
Adam snorted, casting Killian a concerned look. “Liked?”
“Like liked the girl?”
“You mean as in loved her? Alex? Are you insane?”
Reality deflated Killian’s momentary happiness and he slumped back into a slouch. “Yeah. Well, it’s just…” Killian waved to the darkened fields stretching in all directions. “I mean this is a little extreme, being banned from the party to do patrol work is one thing, but he has us on real patrol tomorrow night and that’s when the most fun is. Think about it, man. We’re going to miss the auction.”
“All that prime female flesh.” Adam nodded, not really caring. The auction tomorrow, the orgy tonight, none of it mattered much to Adam. He’d spent all his life surrounded by the wrong type of women, even from birth.
The women at the club were great, nice and a hell of a lot fun, but they never could give Adam the one thing he’d always truly lusted after—comfort. While the beautiful, well-trained pets corralled in the club might be a world apart from his own drunken bitch of a mother, they all had one thing in common. They didn’t care a lick about him beyond what he could do for them in the moment.
It kind of wore him out on the one hand. On the other hand, good girls didn’t go in for the kind of fun Adam enjoyed between the sheets. At least he didn’t think they would. He didn’t really know because he’d nev
er really gone trolling for a decent woman. It just seemed to him by definition that the type of woman who would settle down wouldn’t be interested in a man who wanted to share her for happily ever after.
“Fresh flesh.” There was something almost desperate sounding in Killian’s voice.
That tone had been squeaking into Killian’s words more and more lately. At first Adam had thought it was because of Adam’s own comments about looking more for a relationship than quick a service by the latest honey at the club. Given Killian’s sworn bachelor mentality, it made sense his friend would be getting jumpy.
What didn’t make sense was the strange fixation Killian had developed for a particular brunette. It’d taken Adam a while to put the pieces together. Not that hadn’t been kind of obvious.
Killian had developed a sudden habit of wanting to eat almost every meal at the Bread Box. Then when they’d get there, Killian would get all pissed and go all silent, just watching the brunette like a cat watched a mole.
Adam didn’t know her name, but she appeared to be good friends with Heather Lawson, the owner of the diner. They hung out at the bar, mostly chatting, while Killian tended to position himself in a booth so he could glare at the prissy looking brunette. Not that she ever once looked his way.
It was actually kind of pathetic, a trait Killian had never been accused of. Especially not over such a homely looking thing. The woman wrapped herself in layers of oversized, dowdy clothes and did absolutely nothing with her hair but pin it into a bun.
A good girl, definitely. One who would undoubtedly be having a big family and a picket fence. Adam doubted, though, that she’d be rounding out the image with two husbands. From what he could tell of her by her appearance, the brunette was a just-one type.
That made Killian’s fixation all the more strange and, consequently, more concerning. Killian’s ego couldn’t accept a rejection. So, of course, he had to go and prove himself with some overly outlandish action, like seducing the sheriff’s personal pet.
Given the choice of a reckless partner or one who moped around like a lovesick schoolboy, Adam had picked reckless and signed onto Killian’s less-than-intelligent plan. Not that any of Killian’s plans were ever good, and this one had been no different.
Now, the sheriff was pissed at them, and Killian was still dragging Adam to the Bread Box every damn day. Like a damn dog with his bone, but that woman sure ain’t going to be playing with it.
Poor Killian. He just had to live with disappointment all around. Adam tried to soften the blow for his partner.
“I don’t know. Somebody’s got to work. The whole station can’t take the night off. Besides, the party will still be going when we get off.” Meaning there would still be plenty of pussy to go around.
Killian didn’t bother to respond. Instead, he returned to his silent brooding, leaving Adam to his. Only he couldn’t concentrate on anything with that noise flittering in and out on the night breeze. Going still, he strained to hear the distant, sporadic scratch in the night’s normal harmony. His feet shifted, following the direction of the noise as he tried to figure out what it was.
“It’s late enough to call off this patrol.” Killian followed after him, not even appearing aware that Adam was actually doing something. “Maybe we could still salvage something of the night.”
“Give it another half hour,” Adam responded absentmindedly as the gasping scratch started to gather into an identifiable sound.
“Oh, come on,” Killian groaned. “All the teenagers that normally try have tried. They’re probably three sheets to the wind right now, having their own party.”
Pausing to cast Killian a smirk, Adam asked, “You think?”
“Yeah.”
“Then what’s that?”
“What?” Killian looked around.
“Shh. Listen,” Adam whispered.
Killian stilled, appearing to concentrate for a moment. There, cutting through the soft hum of insects and the deep-throated croaks of frogs and the silence, the noise came again. An engine blended into the soft murmur of the night. It whined upward through the gears in a protest that told Adam the car was either stuck or trying to tow something way too heavy.
“Shit.” Killian groaned out the word, and Adam knew he was silently hoping they could let it slide. Not in this lifetime. Terrorizing some teenagers sounded like more fun to him than watching a drunken orgy.
“Come on.” Adam started off for the vehicle. “Let’s go scare some sense into some sixteen-year-olds.”
Killian muttered and cussed but followed Adam as he traced the sound all the way back to the road, a decent distance from the party. Adam guessed the kids were on their way out and probably got stuck in the drainage ditch running along the road. One to ten they’re drunk, Adam bet himself as the outline of a small compact started to cut its way through the shadows.
The engine sounds had died out. The kids must have given up hope of driving themselves out of trouble. A wise decision from what Adam could see. The little car was close to vertical with its ass buried in the ditch. They’d left somebody to sit on the car. Literally, the kid had stretched out right on the hood.
The runt of the group from what he could tell at the distance. Adam had dealt with enough teenagers to know they’d probably left the most timid and defenseless one to guard the car until they could come back with one of their daddy’s stolen pick-ups to haul Mommy’s car out of the ditch.
“This should be fun.” Killian barely breathed the words out, coming to a stop right behind Adam. They lurked in the deep shadows of the closest cluster of trees, watching the kid stretch out on the hood.
“Bet he’s asleep.”
Meaning they could get the drop on the boy and give him the start of a lifetime. “You go left.”
* * * *
Rachel gave up the battle. The back tires were stuck. As in not coming out.
Everything. Everything up to this moment—perfect.
It figured, though, that her luck wouldn’t hold out. Nothing in her life ever did. She should have known that Hailey’s too-convenient phone call telling her about the Cattleman’s party and Tim’s actually being home to lend her his camera, completely set up to take night pictures, were both jinxes. If she didn’t have to work hard for something then inevitably it all fell apart.
Like getting herself stuck in a ditch and having left her cell phone at home and Pittsview being way too long of a walk away for her, those kind of things tended to be all her fault for failing to take the time and do things properly.
God, I’m channeling my mom now.
If only her mother could see her, she’d be horrified, and not because Rachel had gotten her car stuck. No, her mother would turn a new shade of red, probably go all the way to purple, if she knew what kind of orgy Rachel had not only spied on but actually taken more than one picture of. Thankfully, her mother probably couldn’t fathom the kind of things the local politicians had been doing to the women dressed in nothing but shoes and collars.
There had been women on leashes, women getting spanked, whipped, fucked in every position Rachel knew and many she hadn’t, but then again she’d never even dreamed of doing more than one man at once. Not at all shocked by what she’d witnessed, Rachel’s outrage had come a little late and resulted in her fleeing with such speed she’d gotten her car stuck.
What woman wouldn’t run for her life when she realized that she was getting…turned on? No, that’s not the word for it. It was more like she’d gone into heat. Her body still hummed, actually, but Rachel chose to ignore it and focus instead on the article that she never would write.
The idea had been to come out here and take pictures to help fill an article that would jumpstart her career and give her life some kind of zip. There was only one problem with her plan. It wasn’t wise to live in a small Southern town when after publishing pictures of the mayor riding some woman’s ass and the president of the city council getting his dick sucked by the same woman and, worse, a
t the same time.
There could be no publishing the article, no matter how much fun it might be to watch the city explode. The problem with explosions was people tended to get hurt. Her one article could wreck not only individual lives, marriages, families, but the whole damn town.
But it’s supposed to be my ticket out. Her ticket to something more than Fridays wasted with frozen dinners and her knitting needles. After watching all those women have true, honest-to-God orgasms, Rachel really wanted her ticket to take her there. Maybe a good fuck would get rid of this restless itchiness that had invaded her body ever since she realized her thirtieth birthday was approaching way too fast.
It wasn’t fair. She deserved an orgasm, and she shouldn’t have to lower herself to going out with the likes of Killian Kregor to get one. Just at the thought of the large deputy, Rachel twitched. Despite having lived in Pittsview her whole life without ever having a run-in with Killian Kregor, it seemed lately she couldn’t escape him.
Everywhere she went, she saw him. Every time, it reminded her of how big a coward she actually was. He’d been a complete ass when she’d first met him, but, true to his word, Killian’s fake charm had been all but devastating. No matter that she knew he’d been putting on a show for her benefit, Rachel had found herself captivated by the arrogant man.
He had a right to his cockiness. With looks that could make an archangel jealous and a life spent traveling to all sorts of exotic locations and having all kinds of adventures, he was everything she wasn’t. Nobody would ever accuse the man of being boring, and a woman only had to take a second look to know he was worth all the aggravation.
Inhaling a single breath of his musky scent flooded a woman’s brain with images of sweaty bodies, of callused fingers biting into her ass while he pumped her hard and fast against his grinding pelvis and raced her toward a true, hot-blooded climax…
