Lillian Roxon died of an asthma attack in her New York apartment in 1974.
Jerry Rubin became a Wall Street stockbroker and ran networking ‘success’ salons for yuppies in New York. He died in November 1994 after being hit by a car in Los Angeles.
Martin Sharp continues to ‘tidy up’ his crumbling Sydney mansion surrounded by books, artworks, scrapbooks and incriminating documents, while managing his houseguests and outwitting the stickybeaks. Still painting, he is currently in the process of curating an exhibition of his work for the Museum of Sydney.
Albie Thoms has completed a book about Sydney’s counter-culture in the Sixties.
Ed Victor, a co-founder of the Groucho Club in Soho, is a major literary agent with a string of glamorous clients. In 2002 he published his first book, The Obvious Diet – Your Personal Way to Lose Weight Fast Without Changing Your Lifestyle. Dream on, Ed.
Richard Walsh was for many years managing director of Kerry Packer’s Australian Consolidated Press, responsible for fifty mass-market magazines, some of which were more explicit than School Kids Oz. He is a lecturer and freelance journalist, and commissions new books for Allen & Unwin as its Consultant Publisher.
Bob Whitaker is a photographer still, though for many years he was more a gentleman farmer in Sussex. Lately there have been retrospectives of his life’s work, notably Yesterday & Today: The Photography of Robert Whitaker 1962-2002, Monash Gallery of Art, Melbourne. He continues to compile a digital archive of his work.
Mary Whitehouse retired from the sex and censorship wars in 1994. She died in 2002 at the age of 91.
David Widgery co-founded Rock against Racism, practised as a doctor in London’s East End for twenty years and remained a voluble critic of Margaret Thatcher’s impact on Britain. He died from misadventure in 1992.
John Wilcock continues to travel and keep alive the flame in his ‘more or less’ monthly magazine, the Ojai Orange, ‘a journal of art, pseudo sociology and innocent anarchy’, which can be viewed online, along with his autobiography, Manhattan Memories. http://www.ojaiorange.com
But the delusions of hope, if they are
delusions, among radical intellectuals, are
often more rewarding for society, if not for
their own lives, than the realistic
assessment of the evils of human nature
. . . by those who are wise in their times.
– J. H. Plumb, New Statesman,
September 1972.
