  Hollow End: the northwest end of Woody Hollow. Also named Hollow End because of the many burrow dwellings there.

  (the) Homecoming: the name given by northern Warrows to their long search (the Wanderjahren, q.v.) for, and their slow migration to, a Land of their own.

  (the) Horde: a great mass of Foul Folk—ten thousand or more—ravaging across the land.

  (the) Horn of the Reach: q.v., (the) Horn of Valon.

  (the) Horn of Valon: a Dwarven horn found in the hoard of Sleeth the Orm by Elgo, Sleeth’s Doom. The horn was passed down through the generations until it became Vidron’s property. For reasons unexplained—perhaps in a sweeping gesture of generosity, but more likely because the horn sought to fulfill its destiny—Vidron gave the horn to Patrel as a token of the Warrow Captain’s office. It was used by Patrel to rally forces during the Winter War, although a greater destiny for the horn lay in future events. Also known as the Horn of the Reach.

  Horth: a Man of Rian. Captain of the escort of a waggon train that passed through the Boskydells in the time of the Winter War.

  (the) Host: the High King’s armies.

  (the) House of Aurinor: a branch of weapons-making Lian Elves in the Duellin, a lost city of Atala.

  (the) House of Aurion: the lineage of Aurion.

  Hoven: a Realm of Mithgar bounded on the north by the Grimwall, on the east by Jugo, on the south by the Avagon Sea, and on the west by Tugal.

  Hrôks: (singular: Hrôk): (Châkur: vile-vermin): q.v., Hlôks.

  Hrosmarshal: (Valur: hros = horse; Horse-Marshal): the highest rank among the Reachmarshals of Valon. Third from the King.

  Hurn: a Realm of Mithgar located at the east reach of the Avagon Sea, bounded by Alban to the north, Sarain to the South, and the Avagon Sea to the west.

  Hyranan: (Twyll: Hyrani): a Warrow term meaning, a Man of Hyree.

  Hyranee: (Châkur: Hyrani): Dwarven term meaning, one or more Men of Hyree. (Q.v., Hyrani.)

  Hyrani: (plural: Hyrania): a Man of Hyree.

  Hyree: a southern Realm in Mithgar allied with Gron during the Winter War. Bounded on the north by the Avagon Sea, on the east by Karoo, on the south by wasteland, and on the west by the Weston Ocean.

  Igon: a Man of Pellar. Youngest son of Aurion. A Lord and Prince of the Realm. Brother of Galen. Hero. A member of Brega’s squad.

  Inarion: an Elf. Lian warrior. Elf Lord of Arden Vale. Leader of the Elves in Weiunwood during the Winter War. Fought in the Battle of Kregyn.

  (the) Infant Brigade: a name given in jest by Vidron to the Company of the King.

  (the) Inner-break: a break in the inner Thornwall, upstream from Ford Spindle, caused by a vast granite slab where no Spindlethorn grows.

  Intruders: those Outsiders (q.v.) who would intrude on the peace of the Boskydells.

  (the) iron-beaked helm: the hideous iron mask, like the snouted face of a gargoyle of legend, worn by Modru. Also known as the iron mask.

  (the) iron mask: q.v., (the) iron-beaked helm.

  (the) Iron Tower: Modru’s fortress in the Wastes of Gron. Also known as the Cold Iron Tower, the dark citadel, the Kinstealer’s holt.

  (the) Ironwater River: a river originating in the Rimmen Mountains and flowing southeasterly to the Inner Sea.

  (the) Isleborne River: a river running south and west from Luren to the Weston Ocean. So named because of the many islands in the river. Also called the Fainen (Sylva).

  (the) isle of Caer Pendwyr: the sheer-rock-walled island between Hile Bay and the Avagon Sea on which Caer Pendwyr is located.

  Jallor Pass: a pass through the Grimwall Mountains joining Aven to the Steppes of Jord.

  Jandrel: an Elf. Lian warrior. Captain of the Arden-ward at the southern entrance into Arden during the Winter War.

  Jarak: (Châkur: courser): Dwarven name for Cianin Andele (q.v.).

  Jarek: a Man of Valon. Ex-soldier living in the Alnawood in Gûnar. Jarek bore the word to Vidron that the Gûnarring Gap was held by the enemy.

  Jarriel: a Man of Rian. Captain of the Castle-ward at Challerain Keep. Slain by Ghola in the slaughter of Laurelin’s waggon train.

  jemedar: a commander in the Lakh of Hyree.

  Jet: Galen’s black horse. Slain by the Krakenward.

  Jihad: Holy War.

  Jillian Tors: a range of mountains north of the Dalara Plains and bordering on the Boreal Sea.

  jobbernowl: a Warrow term meaning, wobble-head. Used by Patrel to taunt an Ogru.

  Jol: q.v., Yule.

  (The) Jolly Warrow: a rowdy, Warrow, marching song.

  Jord: q.v., Steppes of Jord.

  Jugo: a Realm of Mithgar bounded on the north by Gûnar; on the east by Valon, the Red Hills, and Pellar; on the south by the Avagon Sea; and on the west by Hoven and the Brin Downs.

  Jute: an island Realm in Mithgar, bounded on the west by the Weston Ocean, and on the north, east, and south by the Ryngar Arm of the Weston Ocean.

  Kael Gap: a gap through the Trelldunes joining Trellinath to Wellen.

  (the) Kammerling: a silveron hammer said to have been forged by Adon, Himself. Used to smite Black Kalgalath, a Dragon.

  Karoo: a desert Realm, bounded on the north by the Avagon Sea, on the west by Hyree, and on the east by Chabba.

  (the) Keep: q.v., Challerain Keep.

  Kel: (Sylva: untranslated): an Elven word of greeting.

  Khana: (Châkur: breakdeath): Dwarven title for Durek, i.e., Khana Durek = Breakdeath Durek.

  Khôls: (singular: Khôl: (Châkur: reaving-foe): Dwarven term for Ghûls (q.v.).

  King of the Rillrock: a buccan-Warrow game played on the center Rillstone of the East Footway across the Dingle-rill. Buccen try to maintain sole possession of the Rillrock (q.v.) against all comers. Also, the title given to Danner Bramblethorn (q.v.) and inscribed on his tomb near the Iron Tower.

  Kings-steward: the Man placed in charge of a King’s Court whenever the High King is away.

  Kinstealer: a name given to Modru when his forces took Laurelin captive.

  Kinstealer’s holt: q.v., (the) Iron Tower.

  Kistan: an island Realm in the Avagon Sea north of Karoo and south of Vancha. Ancient enemy of Pellar. Home of sea rovers (pirates). Allied with Gron during the Winter War.

  Kistanee: (Châkur: Kistani): a Dwarven term meaning, one or more Men of Kistan. (Q.v., Kistani.)

  Kistani: (plural: Kistania): a Man of Kistan.

  Kistani Fleet: the sailing vessels of the Rovers of Kistan.

  Kraggen-cor: (Châkur: Mountain-strength, Mountain-might): the Dwarven Realm mined under the Quadran. Mightiest of all Dwarvenholts. Lost to the Dwarves for more than a thousand years while ruled by the Ghath. One of the rare places in Mithgar where silveron is found. Also known as the Black Deeves, Black Drimmen-deeve, the Black Hole, the Black Maze, the Deeves, Drimmen-deeve, the Mines.

  Krakens: (singular: Kraken): vast evil creatures of the sea. Tentacled. Some are said to live in the Great Maelstrom. Perhaps the female mates of Dragons.

  (the) Krakenward: a Kraken living in the Dark Mere guarding the Dusk-Door. Controlled by Modru and borne to the lakelet by Skail the Cold-drake in preparation for the coming of the Dragon Star. Also known as the Hèlarms (Sylva), the Lurker, the Madûk (Châkur), the Monster, the Monster of the Dark Mere, the Warder, the Warder from the deep black slime.

  Kregyn: (Sylva: crag-walls): q.v., Grûwen Pass.

  Kruk: (Châkur: interjection): Dwarf oathword of rage.

  Laird: (Weiunwooder: lord): a name used by Baskin and others when addressing Galen: i.e., Laird Galen.

  (the) Lakh: the name given to the armies of Hyree

  Landlift: a great rift of uplifted land marking where Dalara, Rian, and Wellen come together.

  (the) Land of the Barrier: q.v., (the) Boskydells.

  (the) Land of the Runts: Modru’s name for the Boskydells

  Landover Road: a great east-west road of Mithgar, running eastward from the Crestan Pass in the Grimwall.

  (the) Larn River: a river in Trellinath flowing westerly from the Grimwall Mountains into the Isleborne River.

  Last Yule: the last day of Yule (q.v.); January 1. Also known as Year’s Start Day.

  Laurelin: a Woman of Riamon. Princess. Betrothed to Galen in the time of the Winter War. Modru’s captive during the Winter War. Wife of Galen after the Winter War. Mother of Gareth.

  leaf: apparently, tobacco. Smoked in pipes usually made of clay.

  (the) Leaning Stone: a great stone tilted against the bank of the Nith River just above Vanil Falls. Used to cache Elven boats.

  Leeks: a Boskydell Village in Eastdell north of the Crossland Road and along the Thornwall.

  (the) Legionnaires: warriors of Galen’s Legion (q.v.).

  (the) Legion of King Galen: q.v., Galen’s Legion.

  Leut: an island Realm of northern Mithgar, bounded by the Boreal Sea and by the Weston Ocean.

  Lian: (Sylva: first): one of the two strains of Elves, the other being the Dylvana. Also known as the First Elves.

  (the) Lian Crown: the Kingship (Coronship) of the Lian.

  (the) Lian Guardian(s): Elf warder(s) of Mithgar, guarding against evil. Also known as Guardian(s).

  Lianion: (Sylva: first land): Elven name given to Rell, where the Lian once dwelled.

  Littlefen: a large marshland in Centerdell.

  Loftcrag: one of the four mountains of the Quadran beneath which Kraggen-cor is delved. A mountain whose stone is tinged blue. Also known as Chagor (Sylva), and Ghatan (Châkur).

  Loka: (singular: Lok): (Sylva: vile-ones): q.v., Hlôks.

  Loken: a term meaning, of the Loka.

  Lôkha: (singular: Lôkh): (Old Pellarion: ones-of-filth): q.v., Hlôks.

  Lôkken: a term meaning, of the Lôkha.

  (the) Lone Eld Tree: a lone Eld Tree growing among the pines in Arden Valley near Arden Falls.

  (the) Long Hall: one of the chambers in Kraggen-cor through which the Deevewalkers strode.

  (the) Long Stair: the portage-way up the Great Escarpment at Vanil Falls.

  (the) Lost Prison: the place in Kraggen-cor where the Gargon was trapped for three-thousand years.

  (the) Low Plane: one of the three Planes, holding the Low Worlds.

  Luren: ruins of a former great city of trade. Suffered through the Dark Plague; destroyed by fire and abandoned.

  Luren Ford: the ford across the Isleborne River at Luren.

  Luth Chuker: a buccan Warrow of the Boskydells. Lieutenant and then Captain of the Company of Whitby’s Barn.

  Madûk: (Châkur: evil monster): the Dwarven name for the Krakenward.

  (the) Mages of Xian: a branch of Wizards.

  maggot-folk: a Warrow name for Spawn.

  Mandrak: (Twyll: Man-Dragon): a Warrow name for the Gargon.

  mangonel: a small, torsion-driven catapult used for throwing rocks and fireballs.

  March-ward: the patrols of Lian warriors guarding the borders of Darda Galion.

  Market Square: a town square in Woody Hollow with stores and an open market.

  Master of the Cold: one of Modru’s names, for it was believed that he controlled blizzards.

  Master Tuck: Bockleman Brewster’s title for Tuck.

  Master Waerling: Jandrel’s title for Tuck.

  Medwyn: a Man of Pellar. Warrior Captain. Member of the War-council. Slain at Challerain Keep.

  Men: Mankind as we know it. One of the Free Folk of Mithgar. Allied to but separate from Dwarves, Elves, Warrows.

  Merrilee Holt: a damman Warrow. Daughter of Bringo and Bessie Holt. Wife of Tuckerby Underbank. Damman Thornwalker. Leader of the Struggles. Heroine. Dam of Raven Underbank.

  mian: a tasty Elven waybread.

  (the) Middle Plane: one of the three Planes of creation, holding the Middle Worlds.

  Mid Ford: a Boskydell ford across the Dingle-rill east of Woody Hollow.

  Midwood: a Boskydell village north of the Tineway in the southeast fringes of the Eastwood in Eastdell.

  Mineholt North: a principal Dwarvenholt in the Rimmen Mountains in Riamon.

  Mitheor: (Châkur: mid-earth): the Dwarven name for Mithgar (q.v.).

  Mithgar: a term generally meaning, the world. Also can refer to the Realms under the rule of the High King. Also known as the midworld, and as Mitheor (Châkur).

  Mithgar’s Shroud: the aurora seen in the night skies in the days after the passing of the Dragon Star.

  (the) Mittegarda: (Old Pellarion: Middle Worlds): all the worlds upon the Middle Plane.

  Modru: an evil Wizard (of Magekind, but uses the [life essence] of others to cast his spells; a Black Mage). Servant of Gyphon. Master of the Myrkenstone. Slain by Tuck in the Winter War. Also known as the Enemy, the Enemy in Gron, the Evil in Gron, the Evil One, the Evil up North, the Foe, the Kinstealer, the Master of the Cold, Modru Kinstealer.

  Modru’s aide: q.v., monster of the dark.

  Modru’s evil sanctum: the round room atop the central tower where Modru kept his implements of Wizardry, his tools of torture, and the Myrkenstone.

  Modru’s myrk: (Sylva: myrk = murk): also known as the murk of the Evil One. (Q.v., the Dimmendark.)

  Mont Challerain: a high tor upon the plains of Rian; upon this mountain is built Challerain Keep. Mont Challerain is the northernmost mountain of the sparse Signal Mountains.

  story from The Raven Book and from The Fairhill Journal into the Common Tongue, there is no common equivalent for the actual Dwarven word, hence, when used by Dwarves, Mountain is always capitalized to signify Châkka reverence for the living stone of Mitheor (Mithgar).

  Neaths: the name given to the levels in Kraggen-cor deeper than the entrance at Dawn-Gate. (Q.v., Gate-Level.)

  Neddra: the name of one of the Untargarda whence came the Spawn.

  Neddy Finch: a buccan Warrow of the Boskydells. Slain in the Battle of Brackenboro.

  Negus of Terror: (Slûk: Negus = Lord): q.v., (the) Gargon.

  ’Night: that daily time within the Dimmendark ordinarily associated with nighttime hours. Also refers to Winternight (q.v.).

  night-spawn: evil creatures of the night.

  ninnyhammer: dolt.

  (the) Nith River: (Sylva: nith = rising): a river in Darda Galion flowing east to plunge down the Great Escarpment at Vanil Falls into the Cauldron to join the Argon River.

  Nob Haywood: a buccan Warrow of the Boskydells. A storekeeper at the time of the Winter War.

  Nordlake: a great lake of evil repute, in Aven along the Grimwall Mountains.

  (the) Nord River: a river in Aven flowing southwesterly from Nordlake and into the Argon River.

  (the) North Reach: the northern quadrant of Valon.

  North Riamon: q.v., Riamon.

  Northdell: one of the Seven Dells of the Boskydells.

  Northdune: a Boskydell village along the Upland Way north of the Claydunes in Northdell.

  (the) Northern Wastes: all the barren lands in the arctic north.

  (the) Northern Wastes of Gron: q.v., Gron.

  (the) North Rimm River: q.v., (the) Rimm River.

  (the) North Trace: a cart path north out of Woody Hollow through the Dinglewood to Two Fords Road.

  Northwood: a large forest in Northdell in the Boskydells.

  (the) Northwood tunnel: an abandoned way through the Thornwall. Although crofters encouraged the southern half of the tunnel to grow shut, the northern half was left alone; here it was that Modru’s Spawn invaded the Boskydells.
