Sal turned to Mack. “Take Tess to my rooms, she’s not to leave them until we are ready to go to her apartment and pick up the kid.”

I was numb when Mack helped me to my feet. Sal stopped us as we neared him. He took my face in his sure grip and kissed me roughly. “Welcome home baby.” He said softly.

I felt like I had died and gone to hell.

  CHAPTER 5

I sat on the black leather couch in the opulent lounge room, my mind and body totally numb from shock. Mack sat in an armchair not too far from me, guarding the only entry or exit to the lounge room and the rest of the penthouse. The newspaper open in his hands and his leg crossed casually over his knee where he absentmindedly bounced his elevated foot.

My mind raced through the shroud that had befuddled it, trying to make sense of everything. Salvatore Carelli, one of the nicest, kindest guys I had ever met. The man who had shown me nothing but affection; showered me with beautiful gifts; who had protected me from rapacious drunks twice and happily accepted the gift of a hand drawn picture from my only son, was a cold blooded murderer and drug lord.

I slowly rose to my feet and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows. Mack’s foot stopped jiggling and he pulled down the corner of the paper to watch me. I leaned against the aluminium frame of the window, leaning my forehead against the cold glass and watched the world go by in the bright, clean sunshine.

I would never feel clean here. Never know the peace and happiness of a new flourishing love for a man whom I thought had a heart of gold. Not again. Never.

I don’t know how long I had stayed there, but I noticed a movement in the window. I looked up to see Sal standing behind me. His ruggedly handsome face watching me, reflected in the windowpane.

“Come on baby, we have to go and get your stuff from your house, then go pick up Ty.” He smiled, but only his mouth showed his mirth. His eyes calculated, assessed, tried to figure out what I was willing to do to keep my boy safe. The supremely fucked up thing was, I would have done the same thing in his shoes.

I felt him grab my arm and I hauled my sorry ass away from the window. His hand on the small of the back sent icicles of fear through my body. He pulled me close against him when we walked through the open door to the hallway and I felt the hard butt of his pistol pressing against my hip. He must have felt my shiver of fear, because he hushed me and ran his warm hand up and down my bare arm. His caresses only a few hours ago had excited me. Now, they turned my blood to icy acid.

We waited for the private elevator to arrive from the ground floor. He held me close and kissed the nape of my neck. I stood there like an artist’s wooden doll, the kind that the artist can pose for their life drawing. Sal’s breath was warm against my ear seconds before the doors opened.

“At the end of every night, I expect you to be in my bed, waiting for me to fuck you.” He whispered darkly. I lowered my head, biting my lip and fighting the tears. The doors opened and Sal pressed me forward. Mack and another goon got in with us, taking position in front with their backs to Sal and I. His hands roamed my body. Letting me know that he had me. I was trapped, nowhere to run, no-one to turn to. No choice but to submit lest he hurt Ty. I would not let that happen, I could not let that happen.

I plastered a serene look on my face as the doors opened to the main part of the club. It was quiet, save for the cleaners and the staff prepping for the night’s business. I was still clad in my indigo evening dress, there was a patch of blood on the back of the bodice. A handprint that matched Sal’s perfectly.

He took off his jacket and covered it. The scent of his aftershave had once made my stomach flutter with desire and excitement, now, it caused it to lurch heavily. I wanted to be sick, I wanted to run, I wanted to scream and denounce him for the son of a bitch that he was. But the press of Sal’s handgun against my side kept me from doing all these things. That and the guards that had multiplied around us as we had exited the elevator kept me in my place.

The Mercedes waited us. Mack taking his position behind the wheel his other goon taking the front passenger seat, Sal slipping in beside me in the backseat. I noticed he slipped the internal child lock on the back doors of the car, meaning that Mack or the other goon would have to open the door for us to get out. I shifted over to the far side of the seat but Sal pulled me onto his lap.

“Drive, Mack.” Sal said as he held me tightly to the point of pain. Unable to move, I sat there and endured. He would occasionally pull my face to his for a soft kiss that would turn into a sharp bite against my lip. His hands drifted over the rise of my breasts and ass, pinching, or groping. His grin when he elicited a squeak of pain or shock from my lips only seemed to spur him on.

I watched as the city’s dirty streets flashed by us. The areas we passed through gradually getting worse. We arrived at my apartment complex within the slummier area of the City. Mack pulled up beside a white van. The other two goons got out, having taken off before we did but we had lost them in the traffic when we hit a few red lights that they had missed.

Sal grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the car, I lost my footing on the uneven earth. Sal caught me before I fell to the ground in an undignified heap. I looked up at him and nodded. “Thanks.” I said softly as he righted me. I trotted up onto the concrete paths, a sense of utter dread almost overwhelming me as I neared one of the few places that had seemed like a home, a real home with Ty.

  CHAPTER 6

People watched from the shadows in their windows as we walked to my apartment building. Kids on skateboards who should have been at school but found playing truant was much more interesting stopped and stared as the upper class folks left their Mercedes and walked into the apartment complex.

The shadows seemed longer, more dangerous with the presence of Sal and the goon squad. I climbed the stairs with Sal beside me, and Mack right behind me. Mack handed my purse to me when we arrived at my locked door. That damned purse. If I hadn’t forgotten it, then maybe… what? I thought to myself. Maybe I wouldn’t be in this mess? Maybe I’d be actually married to a murderer, or carrying his baby without my knowledge of who and what he actually is or does to make the bulk of his money? I wondered which was better, knowing or not knowing.

My hand shook as I pulled the keys out and tried to slide it into the lock. Sal’s hand reached out and helped my hand do the task that it refused to do. The door opened with a click at the turn of the key and Sal pushed it open. I looked into my small home. Sal’s wardrobe could simply fit into my living area. His en suite could probably fit my entire tiny apartment. I stepped forward, Sal right behind me. Followed by Mack and his men. Sal peeled away from me to look out the window.

I made a beeline for the bathroom and shut the door with a bang, locking it. I looked at myself in the mirror for a moment before I started to undress, slipping the dress from my shoulders after reaching behind myself and unfastening the zip, then slipping my bra off as quickly as possible. I jumped as I heard the door being kicked open. I turned, holding the front of the dress up over my nude breasts and looked at Sal’s livid face in the mirror.

“What the fuck are you playing at woman?” he said, with a snarl. He was on me in an instant, spinning me to face him and pressing me hard up against the basin. My little chipped cup with the broken handle that served as Ty and my toothbrush cup fell to the tiled floor where it shattered.

“I…I just want to get changed, please Sal.” I said, my voice catching. I heard footsteps come to a sudden stop at the door. Mack stood at the door watching us.

“Everything okay here, Sal?” he asked.

“Yes, everything is fine, get her shit packed, no furniture, just personal belongings, we’ll be out in a minute.” Sal said, pulling away from me to close the door. I was frozen to the spot with fear. He approached me like a predator who had cornered his prey, his hands went to unbutton his pants. He pulled his hardening cock out, and pressed down hard on my bare shoulder, forcing me to my knees. The ceramic tiles were cold. The chill s
eeping through the bunched material of my dress. I knew what he wanted me to do. I had yet to give him oral pleasure. Needless to say it was not something in our current situation I was going to enjoy doing.

I looked up as he pulled his shirt up, showing me the butt of the gun that had pressed hard against my hip in the club. His hand reached up and pulled the handgun from the holster. He grabbed a fistful of my hair and yanked my head back.

I felt the cold hard metal of the barrel caress the side of my temple.

“The moment I feel teeth…” he said, letting the rest of the threat go unsaid. I closed my eyes, swallowed the bitter bile that crept up my throat and nodded.

“Yes, Sal.” I opened my mouth, softening my lips over my teeth, taking his threat to heart. I licked them quickly to moisten them as they rolled over my sharp incisors and canines. I touched my warm lips to the hot, hard head of his cock and was about to take him inside my mouth when Mack knocked on the door.

“Sal, there’s a lady out here demanding to see Tess, she said if Tess doesn’t come out she’ll call the police and tell them we are robbing her place.” I stopped at Mack’s words, thanking whatever deity was considerate enough to grant me this tiny reprieve from the torture that Sal had planned for me at his pleasure.

Sal growled low in his throat. “Tell her she’ll be out in a minute.” He put his gun back in its’ holster and shoved his cock back in his pants. He pulled my hair, forcing me to go with him, lest he rip it from my scalp. I winced as he brought my face up to his. “Get changed and get rid of her.” He said with a snarl as he rubbed himself against me, his hard-on having not diminished at all

Nodding my assent, I quickly shed the evening gown. The beautiful blue material now stained with Sal’s bloody handprint on the back pooling at my feet. Sal watching my every move, his hand palming his cock in the confines of his pants as his eyes roved hungrily over my body. I was quick to dress, and ran a brush through the mess that Sal had left my hair in. I heard the angry voice of Rafaelina Romano, Olivia’s mother was a little Italian spitfire from Calabria. I walked out in jeans and a tight fitting tee-shirt with “99% Angel” scrawled on it in red glitter against the white material. My blue bra stood out starkly underneath the thin, stretchy material.

“Rafaelina!” I said, smiling as I reached the door where Mack was holding her back, just barely. “Hi, what’s wrong?” I said as I swept past Mack and stood on the front step in the open corridor that separated out apartments on the block.

“Ah, Tessa!” The little woman was obviously relieved. “I thought these men were trying to take your things.” She said in her accented English.

“No, Signora, I’m fine. Ty and I are going to be moving. I have some friends helping me to shift”

“Moving, bella regazza? Is so sudden!” the little woman said embracing me. Sal came out and slipped an arm around me. I tensed a little but forced myself to relax. I was not going to endanger any more lives.

“This is Sal.” I said, introducing him, “My boyfriend. He’s asked Ty and me to move in with him.” I leaned my head against his chest with a smile that made me sick to my stomach for the sham that I had to put on with him to protect Ty.

“Salvatore Carelli!” Rafaelina cried, clapping her hands in joy. “Oh Tessa, you have a good man here!” her obvious joy at my catching such a ‘good man’ was not lost on Sal. He took Rafaelina’s hand and kissed it like a gentleman. “Now you look after our Tessa, she a good, good girl.” She said looking at Sal. Her attention turned to me. “And you take care of him, he a good, honest man, take good care of the people in the community! Very charitable, very good!” she reached forward and took my face in her hands and kissed both my cheeks twice.

“You invite Olivia and I to the wedding, yes?” the little woman was getting way to ahead of herself, but Sal pulled me close against him and nodded. “When we do get married, Signora, you will be there, and your daughter too.” Sal promised, giving my side a harsh squeeze, letting me know that we were taking far too long for his liking here.

“Oh, I almost forgot.” I said as I walked back into the apartment. I grabbed my purse off the coffee table where Sal had tossed it and pulled out some of the last money I had in the world from the tips from my last shift. I ran back out and handed Rafaelina one hundred and fifty dollars for Olivia for her babysitting Ty. We said our goodbyes and Sal grabbed my elbow and escorted me back into my soon-to-be former home.

Sal stood and watched while I grabbed Ty’s clothes from his room, packed up his small assortment of toys and books and packed them in a box to be taken back to the penthouse that would be our cage for however long Sal was going to keep us. I was not thinking of the future, not just yet. I had to take this day-by-day. I went back out into the lounge room and packed up his DVDs. My dresser stood in the corner, I still had to pack that up.

  Sal looked around.

“You only have one bedroom?” he asked. I nodded. “Thought there were two bedrooms.”

“Yeah, all I could afford, single mother, low income earner, get what I’m given, and am thankful for it.” Silently I added when I’m not being threatened by insane drug lords.

“You should be grateful to me, woman.” Sal said, leaning against the door frame to the kitchen where his goons had packed up what crockery and cutlery we had. If the noise they were making was any indication of their activities, they were working on the pots and pans.

I didn’t want to antagonise him, so I nodded. “Yes, Sal, I am grateful.”

He moved, sitting on the couch. He grimaced. “God, how could you sit on this thing?”

I looked at him. “That was my bed actually.” Sal looked up at me, and so help me I almost laughed at the look on his face. “Really?” I turned back to sorting out my poor selection of casual clothes, underwear and sleepwear, shoving it all in a plastic garbage bag, I’d packed all of Ty’s stuff in the few suitcases that we had.

“Yes, really.” I said. His response was a grunt. I closed the drawers, tied off the garbage bag with my belongings, grabbed the few framed photographs of Ty and me in much happier times and turned to him. “I’m done.” I said, taking a last look around the apartment.

Sal nodded. “The boys can finish up here, your bags will be brought to the pent house. He pulled his sleeve over his Rolex watch, “We have twenty minutes before Ty gets out of school. Shall we?” he said, offering him my arm. Reluctantly I took it. “Mack, time to go pick up the kid.”

Mack followed us down to the Mercedes, his eyes searching for any threats to Sal. I knew he was also watching for any moves I might make to escape Sal’s iron grip on my arm. I was put in the car first, Sal following me and again, putting his hands all over me as we drove to Ty’s school. My body began to tremble in fear for my son. I didn’t want him anywhere near these monsters, but I had no choice. All I could do was protect him as best I could.

  CHAPTER 7

Parents stood waiting for their kids to be released from the school. Sal stood beside me, his arm possessively wrapped around my middle. Jess Kingston came up, her bright red lips and fake boobs parting the sea of parents as she homed in on us.

“Tess?” She said with surprise that was as fake as her E size bust. “Well, well, here’s a surprise! We haven’t seen you at the Parents and Teachers Association meetings for a while! Where have you been keeping yourself girl?” I almost cringed as she kissed me on both cheeks, bending her tall, almost anorexic body over to reach my cheeks. Her low cut top almost had her girls spilling out all over the place. Something I was sure was for Sal’s benefit, as he stood right beside me and Jess Kingston was well known for her man-chasing.

“And who is this handsome man?” the man-eater asked me.

“Salvatore Carelli, Jess Kingston.” I said, pulling away from Sal to introduce the pair. Jess’ eyes widened.

“Omigod! The Salvatore Carelli?” she said, taking his hand.

“The Salvatore Carelli.” Sal said with a charming smile that stopped at hi
s lips. Jess began to talk to Sal at a million miles a minute, allowing me to slip away to the fence where the other parents waited and chatted amongst themselves.

I felt Mack’s large body come up beside me. His warmth and presence a reminder of my place and situation.

“Not thinking of doing anything silly now are we Tess?” he said, whispering by my ear.

I shook my head. “No Mack, just wanting to see my son again, hold him in my arms, know he’s all right.” Mack put a hand on my shoulder.

“He’ll be safe, I’ll make sure of it.” He said, squeezing my shoulder before he moved away. His words and gesture gave me some warming comfort. I could still hear Jess chatting away when the school bell rang. Parents shifted, waiting for their kids to get out. It took another five minutes before the first class finally made their way through the doors.

Sal joined my side when Ty’s class got out. I couldn’t help but let my face melt into a warm, happy smile at seeing my beautiful boy. He saw us and he ran into my arms, almost knocking me over.

“Hey kiddo!” I said, planting a kiss on Ty’s cheek and holding him tight, gently rocking him from side-to-side.

“Mummy! You came!” he said as he snuggled into my embrace.

“Yep, can’t not see my big man now can I?” I said, pulling him away from our hug to look at him. I had missed the last few days and nights due to work and being with Sal. It tore me up inside, I felt that I had neglected my child in favour for a man who turned out to be a monster.

Ty began to chatter away about his day like a monkey, but I had to stop him. Sal knelt down beside us.

“Hey, Pal.” He said, putting a hand on Ty’s shoulder. Ty looked at him and grinned.

“Hi Sal.” Ty grinned, remembering Sal from when he had come to pick me up on our dates

“Guess what?” he said, with a genuine smile for my boy. Which was a surprise to me. Due to the tenseness that he had displayed in his eyes when meeting my tiny social circle, which in essence was a lot safer than his own.
