Ty looked at Sal with his child-like innocence.

“You and your mum are going to come live with me.” Sal told my son. “That’s ok pal?”

Ty nodded, probably not quite understanding that Sal meant we were going to live with him right now. Sal took Ty’s school bag off and handed it to Mack, then picked my child up. My heart clenched tightly to see my boy in the arms of a man who could so easily snuff out his innocent life. Mack put a gentle hand on the small of my back and guided me back to the Mercedes.

Sal let me get in first, then put Ty in the back seat before he got in, keeping Ty in the middle. I helped my boy with his seatbelt, making sure it was secure. The drive back to the club and our new home-slash-prison was quiet, with Ty pulling out his pictures that he had drawn, and Sal looking over them with encouragement, he had an arm draped over the back of the seat, tracing his fingers over the nape of my neck as I leaned over to look at Ty’s school work.

“Got much homework today sweetie?” I asked Ty.

“Some reading stuff and writing stuff.” He said, non-committedly.

“When we get to our new home, I’ll get you something to eat and then we’ll get stuck into your homework, okay?” I said.

Ty made a face. “Can I watch a movie first Mummy?” I smiled.

“Do your homework first then we’ll watch a movie, okay?” Ty sulked.

“Hey, homework is important too. If we get it done quickly, then we can watch two movies, deal?”

  “Two?” Ty said, perking up.

“Yep. Two.” I smiled, ruffling his hair

“Deal!” Ty said with a whoop. I smiled and leaned down to kiss the top of his head. I felt Sal’s hand caress the back of mine, down to my nape and I shivered in revulsion.

Ty’s warm body snuggled against mine on the couch had comforted me, making me sleepy. His soft breathing had indicated that he was sleeping. We had sat and watched Monsters Inc. and then Wreck-it Ralph. Sal joining us for the last movie for a while before he had to go and do some ‘business’ stuff.

He had looked at me meaningfully when Ty and I had both recited word-for-word one of the lines from Wreck-it Ralph.

“Ralph, just because you are ‘Bad Guy’, doesn’t mean you are… Bad Guy.” My eyes caught his before I quickly looked away, snuggling tightly against my son as he crunched on popcorn while we watched the huge screen that adorned the wall of Sal’s living room.

There was no way that Sal would ever regain my trust, or love. He was far too dangerous.

I must have drifted off, when I awoke the DVD menu of Wreck-it Ralph was showing on the TV and Ty was gone from my arms and I was alone in the room.

“Ty?” I said softly, sitting up, my heart racing in panic. I got to my feet, frantically searching for my boy. I went to the main bedroom and saw it was empty, no little snoring lump under the covers. My heart clenched in fear as I ran through the hallway, to the spare bedrooms. One had been set aside for Ty to live in. I opened the first two rooms, finding them empty before I heard a soft voice talking in the last room, opposite the office where my nightmare had begun. I ran to the door, which was open.

Inside Ty was snuggled down under a warm quilt, Sal was sitting beside him, reading a story. I sagged against the doorframe as Sal’s eyes lit on me.

“And the beautiful princess had no choice but to marry the evil king to save her people. In time, she fell in love with him, forgiving him for his wickedness and they lived happily ever after.” Sal smiled as he finished the story, my heart clenched in terror as the words hit home. “Looks like your Mum is here to tuck you in, Pal.” He said, leaning down to kiss my boy on the top of his head. Ty sat up

“Mummy.” He said, reaching out for me. I swept into the room with a smile for my son, and only my son. I went to the other side of his queen size bed. He looked so tiny in the bed that I almost started to sob. I made sure his covers weren’t too tightly tucked in, held him tightly and told him how much I loved him. I left my son to sleep, Sal taking me by the elbow and guiding me back to his…our bedroom where he undressed me slowly, tenderly. I stood stiff as a board, unresponsive to his advances.

“You want to keep him safe, you will submit to me again, and again, just like the beautiful princess in the story, you will give yourself to me.” He warned, his hands caressing my breasts as he pressed himself against me from behind. I gave in with a soft sob, letting him take me to his bed, to take my body. My spirit cracked, but was yet to be fully broken.

  CHAPTER 1

For a week life continued on like it had that first night, as if it was Groundhog Day on repeat. Sal would watch and join in as we played ‘Happy Families’ but my life was far from happy or comfortable. Each night he would take the time to read to Ty, weaselling his way into my son’s good books. Ty loved him, he was a father figure, and would have been perfect for my boy, if only I didn’t know the truth about him.

Mack was my constant companion, guard, chief babysitter when Sal wasn’t around. We took Ty to school and picked him up each day. The other parents noticed the change in my demeanour and stayed away like I was radioactive. I took Ty ‘home’ and helped him with his homework, made dinner for our little ‘family’. Knowing that Sal would be sitting down to dinner with us tonight I had cooked a roast lamb.

I stood at the stove, stirring the gravy and heard a man clearing his throat behind me. I turned, still stirring the gravy, lest it go lumpy on me and start to burn. Mack stood there, watching me.

“Hey Mack.” I said softly, turning my attention back to my cooking.

“Hey Tess.” Mack said, shifting from one foot to another. “Sal wants to see you in the office, he has put an ensemble in the en suite for you to wear. You need to be there at nine, sharp.” I stopped my stirring as I took in the information. My hands beginning to tremble.

“He’s not coming to dinner?” I said, resuming my stirring a bit more briskly to hide the shaking.

“No, he has to meet some business partners, they are flying in from overseas, and then coming here for a meeting.” Mack sniffed. “Dinner smells good.” I smiled, and took the gravy off the burner.

“Roast lamb, do you want a plate?” I asked.

  Mack smiled. “Sure.”

“It will be ready in about ten minutes, can you go and get Ty for me?” I asked as I began to plate up the vegetables. I picked up a carving knife and began to slice the roast that had bee
n resting in the roasting pan. The blade shone in the dim light of the kitchen. Then it struck me, Sal was out, not here. Mack was the only one here to guard me.

I looked at the knife, it was sharp. The meat slices that were lying on the platter were a testament to that fact. I rinsed the knife off in the sink and then dried it. It reflected the light of the kitchen off its’ blade. My mind went through the possibilities. Could I come up behind Mack while he was eating my roast and slit his throat? Could I stab Sal while he slept beside me? How far would I get before someone came after us? We would have to start over again, change our names, our looks.

Freedom from Sal was worth it. But what was the price? I looked at my reflection in the clean blade. My eyes had a haunted look about them, dim, lifeless. No spark

I noticed Mack’s reflection in the blade as I held it up, regarding myself in its’ perfection.

“What are you thinking, Tess?” he said, his voice soft, dangerous. His hand reached out and covered mine, slipping the knife from my hand into his, he put it back in the knife block and took hold of my arms. He turned me and wrapped me in his warm embrace.

“Just be brave, you will get through this, I promise you.” He said, as I began to weep silently.

Ty came bursting in, a six year old ball of energy as he bounced over to his seat, asking for a juice. Mack pulled away from me, his face reddening slightly. I turned and wiped my eyes on a tea towel as Mack turned and took Ty a glass of juice. I finished serving up and took the plates to the table.

Mack sat across from me while Ty used his fork to mash his roast potatoes. More playing with them than cutting them. “Ty…” I said with a hint of loving warning in my voice. Mack smiled heartily. I glanced up at him, a small smile at the corners of my own lips. It was probably the first genuine smile I’d even given him since he had caught me and brought me back to Sal.

We ate our dinner in near silence, Ty asking me to cut his meat for him, Mack took the job and Ty finished what was on his plate. I bathed Ty and came back out to finish the dishes while he watched a movie in the living room. Mack stood beside me and dried the dishes. Even though we had a state-of-the-art dishwasher, I still liked to hand wash things. It was a force of habit from living in a small old apartment. For some reason, Mack’s closeness comforted me tonight. I still had to go and get ready for Sal, and as I showered, I wondered what he wanted me in his office for.

The little red dress that he had selected for me was figure-hugging, accentuating my breasts, hips and ass. I had lost weight during the week due to depression and nerves. I had to force myself to eat even though I didn’t feel like it. I fixed up my hair, pulling it into a tight French roll and applied a little make-up. Mack knocked on the door and I called him in.

“Sal’s going to be here shortly, he wants you in the office before he gets here.”

I nodded, affixing some diamond stud earrings he had given me to my ears. The diamond necklace he had given me on our first date lay sparkling on the counter. I picked it up, Mack took it from my hand and turned me gently to face the mirror. He reached around and clipped the clasp. The jewels shone in the light of the bathroom, Mack’s green eyes looked into my own deep brown ones. Something shone within their deep depths, but it was gone as soon as he noticed I was looking at him. Hi placed a hand on my shoulder and guided me out of the bathroom. I slipped on the heels that Sal had picked out for me and made my way out to the hall.

I walked to the door of Sal’s office. Behind me I heard Ty cough once in his room. My “maternal instincts’ told me there was something off about him coughing like that

I moved across the hall to listen in to Ty’s room, I heard him cough again. I wanted to check in on him but I was out of time. The elevator bell dinged softly at the far end of the hall. I wondered how fast I must have run that night to reach the elevator before Sal’s goons had caught up with me, and only because I had run into Mack’s hard muscled chest.

I went back to Sal’s office and knocked and Dominic opened the door. He leered at me and let me in. he was one of the scumbags who had come on to me in the private room when I did my first shift at the Slip and came face-to-face with Sal for the first time. He motioned with his head for me to enter.

There was a section set up with lounges and a coffee table in the middle. A sideboard with a decanter for whiskey and wine was set up. There was no trace or scent of blood that I could see or smell. Dominic came up to me.

“You’re going to be putting your serving skills to use tonight Tess.” He smiled. I nodded. “Sure thing Dominic.” I replied

  CHAPTER 2

Sal entered the room with several strangers. He smiled when he saw me, Dominic moved away as Sal approached us. The other men sat down in the leather couches. Mack came in and closed the door as Sal reached up, caressed my cheek and kissed me, pulling me close against his body. To keep up appearances, I put my arms around his waist but there was no passion in my embrace, nor my heart for this ruthless man.

“Be a doll and pour us some drinks, Tess.” He said, patting my cheek before he turned away and joined his guests. I went to the sideboard and poured out the wine and whiskey, putting it on trays and offering the glasses to the men. Dominic and Mack handed out tablet pcs to the guests while I took the empty tray back to the sideboard. I turned and looked over at Sal, who gestured for me to join him. When I got close enough to him, he pulled me onto his lap, holding out his tumbler of whiskey in order not to spill the good stuff. I settled on his lap and leaned back in against his chest at his ungentle coaxing. The men chatted about business, a lot of it not making any sense, but I heard Asia, and Mexico a bit. Even Europe mentioned. The men flicked through pictures on the tablets, nodding to each other and pointing at one picture in particular.

A price was named by Sal, thirty thousand dollars. There was a nod of agreement and the man shook Sal’s hand. I felt hot eyes on my body. A gruff, heavily accented voice from one of the men spoke up and drew my attention.

“How much for her?” he said, pointing at me with a lit cigar.

Sal smiled and shifted, I’d felt his erection building slowly over the time I had been sitting on his lap, he pressed himself hard against my ass. “Not for sale, this one is mine.” He said, running a hand possessively over my arms. He took a tablet and scrolled through a few pictures. It was then that I got a look at what was on the tablets.

Pictures of young women, naked or in revealing lingerie, and prices for their purchase. I felt sick to my stomach. Sal’s secrets just got worse and worse. “However, this one here, she’s pretty damned close to my Tess here, and barely used, hence the price tag.”

He handed the tablet back to the man who had an interest in buying me. The buyer looked over the picture. “Hmm. When can I see the merchandise?” Sal smiled at his guest. “Tomorrow, we will have them available for viewing in my private club on Montrose Street, I’ll have my men pick you up around nine, we’ll bring you here to my gentleman’s club, the Golden Slip, we’ll have a nice evening and then we’ll go to the viewing.” Sal finished his drink and then patted my rump, telling me to get up. Mack came and helped me to my feet, I kept my eyes lowered as I got to my feet.

Sal took me back in his arms as the men shook his hand and left. Sal escorted me to a leather armchair and sat me down while he took his seat behind the desk. “Make the arrangements.” He said to Dominic. “I want all the girls ready for their big debut at the club, oh and get Alice to have some of the prettier girls ready for work tomorrow night at the Slip.” Dominic nodded and left, Mack leaned against my chair, his arms crossed. “Is Tess going to be coming with you tomorrow Sal?” he asked his boss.

Sal shook his head, “No, I don’t want Cortez with his meaty paws touching her.” I felt relief flush through me. Sal leaned back in his chair. “I will have Dominic on my security detail, so you can stay here and keep an eye on my little princess.” He said, smirking at me. Mack nodded. Sal got up and walked over to me. I refused to look at him. His han
d under my chin was warm, gentle but I felt his fingers curl around the end of my chin, forcing my head up.

“She’ll be a good girl and behave for you, won’t you, princess?” he said, the danger flashing in his eyes.

“Yes, Sal. I’ll be good.” I said, my voice little more than a whisper.

Sal nodded. “Good girl.” He said, leaning in to press his lips savagely against mine.

He dismissed us and Mack escorted me back to the main bedroom. “Goodnight Tess.” He said. I thought I detected a hint of sadness in his voice.

“Goodnight, Mack.” I said, not turning to face him. I resigned myself to sleep.

  CHAPTER 3

Sometime during the early hours of the night, Sal joined me in bed. His arm wrapped tightly around me. I sat up as the noise that had roused me was heard again. Ty’s hacking cough echoing down the hall. I pulled away from Sal’s grip. He grunted and rolled over in bed, I stilled my movements waiting for him to wake up and pull me back into his tight embrace. He stilled and snored softly. I was quick on my feet as I threw a satin nightrobe over my shoulders and slipped my arms through the soft, cool material of the arms.

I slipped out of the bedroom quietly and padded on bare feet down the hall to Ty’s bedroom. His cough harsh in my ears and I knew it for what it was. My poor boy had a virus. I softly opened the door and turned on the bedside lamp before I settled on the side of the bed. I placed my hand against his forehead. It was damp with sweat and warmer to the touch than normal.

I walked back out, heading to the kitchen. I grabbed some juice and honey for his throat, making a mental note to get some children’s strength paracetamol and cough syrup for him in the morning, if Sal would let me get it that was. Ty woke up when I sat beside him.
