Finding a Hart

“I made him two ounces,” I explained and Jared nodded.

“That’s about his limit right now.”

We stood in the kitchen while I fed the baby and Jared moved food from the containers to plates. Chris didn’t finish his milk before his eyes closed so I pulled it away and burped him before kissing his face and walking him down the hall to the bedroom. When I came back out, Jared handed me a plate and gestured to the living room.

We chatted a little bit and he told me about how his parents had both passed away. His mother had died when he was a kid and he’d lost his dad just four years before. He was an only child and didn’t have any living family left, which was hard for me to even imagine.

I told him about my obnoxious family and he laughed as I described Eldon. When I mentioned a bit about Marco, surprise crossed Jared’s face.

  “Marco Romano?”

“Yeah.” I furrowed my brow. “How do you know my brother-in-law?”

He laughed and shook his head. “I see it now. Briana is your sister, right? You guys look so similar. Marco interned for us last year and he’s now one of the assistants in my department. I’m his boss.”

“Oh, wow. That makes sense, though. I knew when you said you worked at Vandines that it sounded familiar.” I shook my head and let out a small peal of laughter. “Geez. This city is really too small.”

“It is,” he agreed as he placed his empty plate on the coffee table in front of us. He looked at me for a moment before speaking again. “It’s my turn to see if I can ask you a personal question.”

“Go for it.” I mimicked his actions with my own plate and braced myself for whatever he was about to say. He hesitated for a moment before speaking.

“How old are you? It’s not fair that I had to give you all of my statistics for that file and I know none of yours.”

I grinned, not expecting something so easy, and shook my head slightly. “My actual age or the age I feel most days?

  Jared chuckled. “I’ll take both.”

“I feel at least forty most days but I’m twenty-six.”

“I understand completely. I think I’ve aged fifteen years since last week.” He ran his hand through his messy hair. “It gets easier, right? He’ll eventually sleep longer than four hours?”

I laughed and nodded my head. “It does get easier. Time moves so quickly. It feels like just yesterday my oldest nephew was born and now he’s in kindergarten. I know you’re tired but enjoy this moment because you’re going to blink and he’ll be so big.”

“That’s poetic and depressing,” he murmured and I shrugged my shoulders.

  “Aren’t they the same thing?”

Our eyes locked and for a moment, neither of us said anything. The energy passing between the two of us was palpable and I glanced at his mouth without meaning to. When I snapped my gaze back to his eyes, they had darkened slightly and the desire to kiss him felt similar to desperation.

  Client. Inappropriate. Client.

The words rolling around in my head had me blinking quickly and I leaned backwards, shaking myself from my reverie. Jared seemed to do the same, clearing his throat and glancing around the room before looking back at me.

“I accidentally signed up for a poetry class during my junior year of college when I put in the wrong class number. I didn’t realize it until the first day when I strolled in and found out I was the only guy.” He smiled ruefully. “I was going to drop it but I got so many phone numbers after that first day that I ended up keeping it all semester. Even got an A.”

A giggle escaped my throat and seconds later, we were both laughing. I think the laughter on my end was a little hysterical after the tension had finally been freed but either way I was glad to put the awkwardness behind us.

We moved into lighter topics after that and swapped college stories instead. I hadn’t even realized how long I’d been there until my phone chimed with the fifteen minute reminder of my next appointment.

“Shit.” I stood from the couch quickly and smoothed out my skirt. “I have to go. I’m going to be late for my next appointment.”

Jared looked at his watch and his eyes widened. “Damn. I didn’t realize. I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. I just need to get going. Do you mind if I give the baby a kiss?”

When he just gave me a sardonic look, I smiled and ran down the hall in my stockings. I pressed a gentle kiss to Chris’s forehead and rushed back out to the living room so I could slip into my heels. I pulled on my jacket and stuffed my iPad into my bag before shouldering it.

“This was the best lunch break I’ve had in forever. Thank you, Jared.” I moved forward and gave him a quick hug. He returned it with one of his own and smiled as we parted.

“You’re welcome. If you bring another shirt next time, I might throw in dessert.”

I grabbed the doorknob and grinned at him. “Taking advantage of the fact that I’m a dessert whore will get you everywhere, City Roast. Bye.”

He laughed out loud as I pulled the door closed behind me.

  Chapter Fourteen

  Jared

“Come on, buddy,” I groaned as I cleaned spit up off of my son’s chin. “You have to keep some of it in, you know.”

He just stared at me like I was crazy, which I probably was. I had full conversations with the infant on a daily basis, probably cementing my spot in the insane asylum.

I got his chin and mouth clean but frowned when I looked at his eye. One of them was rimmed with red and slightly swollen near the corner where yellow goop was clinging to his skin. No matter how many times I had cleaned it off that day, the goop came back and the swelling was gradually increasing. I had put in a call to the pediatrician’s after hours and weekend line earlier and was still waiting for the doctor to call me back.

I placed him in the big crib that I had set up in the nursey and turned on the small animal mobile. I left him there so I could go change my shirt, which had managed to catch the majority of the spit up. Together, Chris and I were going through about six outfits a day. My washing machine was definitely getting a workout.

I’d had him home for a full week and it had been the longest week of my entire life. I was running off of about five hours of sleep at night and those five hours weren’t even consecutive. My personal hygiene had taken a nosedive and I’d been living on food that could be delivered.

Despite all of that, I was happy. It was hard and exhausting, but being a father was the most rewarding experience of my life. That little guy continued to amaze me. He was staying awake for longer periods of time and made some of the cutest noises when he wasn’t crying. I loved the moments where he would be awake and just studying something, like his mobile. He was going to be a wise person.

Travis and his wife had been by the day before without their kids. Liz had made me a dish of lasagna to keep in the freezer, along with a few other snacks, and they’d both given me some sort of carrier so I could strap Chris to my chest. I had no idea how to work it or if I’d use it but I thanked them both and appreciated the adult conversation.

Besides people at the office, the only person I’d really spoken to that was of the adult variety was Stephanie. I hadn’t actually seen her since Thursday but we sent texts throughout the day. They were usually just small little snippets but we were having full conversations at night once she was home.

Our conversations were that of two people who were very much just friends. Although I was positive I didn’t imagine that look in her eyes when we were on the couch the day of the home visit. I hadn’t been alone in my desire to kiss her. The way she had pulled back so abruptly said a lot. The only problem was that I wasn’t sure exactly what it was saying.

I couldn’t stop smiling after she left and I decided right then that having Stephanie as a friend was better than not having her at all. So, I was enjoying our developing friendship to the fullest.

I went back into the nursery to get Chris
once I’d changed my shirt and was surprised to find that him fast asleep. I stood next to the crib for a moment and just stared at him. His little fists were clenched and up by his head, which was turned to the side as he slept.

I left the door open and headed down the hall to the kitchen. I couldn’t remember if I’d eaten breakfast and if I had, I had no idea what it was. Hell, I had to check my watch to make sure it was even lunchtime.

“I need groceries,” I mumbled to myself as I searched the fridge, trying to decide if the leftover pizza was still good. I had just sat on the couch with a piece and started up Netflix when my phone vibrated on the coffee table in front of me. I picked it up and instantly smiled when I saw Stephanie’s name.

  “Hey, Vanilla Latte.”

When she spoke, I could tell she was smiling, too. “Hey. What are you doing?”

“Scrolling through Netflix to try to find something I can start watching. What are you up to?”

“I spent my entire Sunday morning doing chores around the house so I was going to get myself a late lunch,” she replied, the sound of her blinker clicking in the background. “Have you eaten?”

I looked at the piece of pizza I was holding. “I’m starving. Are you offering to feed me?”

“I am. I know this place with the best pot stickers. Do you like Chinese?”

I chuckled softly. “The spicier the better.”

“Done. I’ll be there in an hour, okay?”

“See you soon, Steph.” I ended the call and stood from the couch so I could toss the pizza I was holding. That prompted me to grab the box from the fridge, along with a few other choice things, and I walked them out to the trash chute in the hallway.

After that, I erred on the side of caution and walked back to my room to brush my teeth since I couldn’t remember if I had that morning or not. That led into me applying deodorant and changing my pants.

I had just finished making sure the bathrooms were clean when the intercom beeped. One of the building’s doormen, Kenneth, spoke when I answered it.

“Mr. Hart, I have Stephanie Gibson here for you.”

I pressed the button to reply. “Send her on up please, Kenneth.”

The elevator chimed a minute later and I was standing in the doorway when she stepped off, carrying two take-out bags. I moved forward and took them from her hands before gesturing her inside.

Stephanie stopped to take off her jacket and I continued to the kitchen, placing the bags on the counter and turning around to look at her.

She had her blonde hair up in a ponytail and her face had just a small amount of make-up on it. The jeans covering her legs appeared to be painted on and the bottoms of them disappeared into a pair of grey boots that went up to her knees. The shirt she was wearing was a deep purple color and scooped low enough on her chest to tease me.

“Good. You’re wearing another short-sleeved shirt today.”

She glanced down at her outfit before her blue eyes met mine. “I am. I’m not going home in just my jacket, though, Jared. Can you imagine if I got pulled over or called into work like that?”

Lucky cop, I thought to myself as I laughed softly. “I can imagine a lot of stuff but that’s not what I meant. Your other shirt isn’t doing it anymore. I was thinking we could trade. I even washed it for you yesterday.”

“That I can do.” She accepted a plate from me and we began spooning food out of the containers before going into the living room. She shook her head when I offered her chopsticks and instead opted for a fork. “What kind of shows do you watch?”

“I like anything I can laugh at. What do you watch?”

She smiled and shook her head. “Probably stuff you wouldn’t like.”

“Don’t be so quick to judge, Gibson,” I replied with a smirk. “Try me.”

“I like dramas. Like Grey’s Anatomy, Gilmore Girls, Scandal, This is Us.”

I picked up the remote, scrolled through the shows, and pressed ‘Play’ on Grey’s Anatomy. “Okay. Let’s try it.”

I could see her watching me out of the corner of my eye but I ignored her and settled on the couch with my food. The show started off kind of stupid but I found myself sucked into the drama anyway. I paused it a few times to ask Stephanie questions, which she gladly answered, and the episode was almost over when Chris began crying from down the hall.

“I’ll get him, you watch,” Steph said, taking my plate from me so she could set them both in the kitchen. I thanked her and mentioned that he was in the crib before focusing on the show. The baby’s crying increased for a moment before it tapered off and I knew that he was completely under her spell.

Stephanie was gone for about ten minutes, long enough for me to finish the episode and start the second. When she reappeared with my son in her arms, she took the cushion immediately next to me rather than the one at the end that she had been occupying minutes before.

“You totally started the second episode.”

I rolled my eyes and tried to hide my smile. “I’m a firm believer in finishing what I start.”

“Uh huh. Can you pause it?” She shifted a bit, causing our shoulders to press together, and held Chris out in front of her. “Have you noticed his eye?”

“Yeah. We have his first appointment tomorrow and I was going to ask his pediatrician about it. I called their office but haven’t heard back so I’m assuming it’s not life threatening.”

She put her feet on the coffee table and laid Chris on her propped up knees before holding a washcloth she’d grabbed from the bathroom. “It’s a clogged tear duct. Perfectly normal. You’ll want to keep it clean and then massage his duct about ten times a day with a warm cloth or your finger.”

She wiped the gunk out of his eye and I took the cloth from her when she was done. Using one finger, Stephanie showed me how to massage the duct by rubbing the side of his nose. I watched closely and nodded when she asked if I wanted to try it.

“It should clear up on its own if you keep massaging it but still ask the pediatrician tomorrow just in case, okay?”

“I will.” I nodded and smiled when Chris wrapped his little fist around her finger. “I seriously don’t think they make babies cuter than him.”

She smiled when Chris locked his eyes on her. “I’ve seen a lot of babies in my time and he’s by far the cutest.”

The silence settled over us as we both stared down at the baby and I was suddenly aware of how close we were. It was such a completely innocent act but my body hadn’t seemed to get the memo. My whole arm tingled from where we were touching and my fingers itched to reach out to her.

I cleared my throat and gestured to the TV. “Meredith kind of annoys me.”

“She annoys everyone, don’t worry. More and better characters come and go.”

Neither of us moved as we watched the episode but she paid more attention to Christopher than she did the show. He stared around curiously and would watch her intently when she’d whisper to him. She stood up about twenty minutes later, declaring he needed a diaper change and that she wanted to do it, giving us some much needed distance.

She came back down the hallway with a freshly changed Chris and took her original spot on the couch but turned so she could put her foot up on the cushion between us. At some point, she had kicked off her boots and I was slowly learning that Stephanie Gibson hated wearing shoes. When I looked at her propped up foot, she immediately moved it back to the floor.

“Wow. I’ve just made myself entirely too comfortable here, haven’t I? Feet on your coffee table, couch.”

I grinned and shook my head as I grabbed her ankle so her foot was back on the cushion next to me. “I like it.”

She returned my smile and we both turned our attention back to the TV. We were in the middle of the second episode when Chris began to fuss and Stephanie insisted on making him a bottle in the kitchen. He fell asleep in her arms shortly after he finished his bottle and she took him back down the hall.

The second episode finished while she was gone and I didn’t bother playing the third while I waited. She finally reappeared about ten minutes later, the brown shirt she’d been wearing almost a week ago on. I grinned and turned so my body was angled towards hers on the couch.

  “Thank you.”

“It’s no problem at all.” She angled her body, too. “I left the other one where this had been in your room.”

We stared at each other for a minute before I broke the silence.

  “How was your weekend?”

She shrugged her shoulders slightly. “It was okay. I worked a bit yesterday so it doesn’t really feel like the weekend, you know?”

“Yeah, I understand. That’s how it feels when I don’t work. The days just run together.” I offered her a small smile. “You work a lot.”

“I do. It’s always been one of the biggest causes of conflict in my life.”

“Yeah?” I turned off the TV completely and settled back against the couch. “How so?”

She stared at me for a moment and then sighed. “I’m the oldest of four and each of them is married, has kids, or both. Except me.”

  “Okay,” I replied slowly. “That’s a bad thing? You’re only twenty-six.”

“I know.” She gave me a small smile. “I think everyone just expects me to be settled down at this point, especially when you factor my almost-ten year relationship –which is about four years longer than any of my siblings have been in a relationship with their significant others.”

“Ten years?” I could feel my eyes widen and I shook my head. “You’re not even old enough to have been with someone for ten years.”

She laughed softly and let her head fall against the couch. “High school sweethearts. To my family, it always made sense that I’d be the first one married, the first with kids, and here I am… the only one without.”

I nodded my head because that did make sense. When I didn’t reply beyond that, Stephanie ran her hands down her face.
