“Sure sweetie I’m right her beside you.” Ivana had sat there and watched her closely.
The whole while she had cried thinking about what Trina had told her. “I’m sorry sweetie; I wish you didn’t know any of this.” Ivana had pet her head and stated.
Her heart ached so badly for her friend. Ivana wasn’t watching the time at all. She couldn’t hear her computer from where she was.
Ivana sat and thought about her childhood and what she had just learned about Trina’s. She felt bad for having rubbed it in Trina’s face about having such a great mom and dad. Then she remembered at the time Trina hadn’t known what she did now.
“I’ll just have to watch it in the future.” Ivana said to herself.
Looking at the time then, she noticed it was now 4:00 Fred’s time. “Oh no, he said 2:00 his time. I hope he’s still there.” She looked down at Trina sleeping and remembered she had told her she would stay with her.
She was being pulled in two directions and didn’t know what to pick. Part of her said ‘it will be okay, go talk to him’. But another part was saying, ‘what if she has a nightmare while you’re gone?”
Ivana felt so torn, she started to cry. “What do I do? Will he even be there now? I don’t know.” She sighed.
How hurt would he be if she didn’t show up until 2 hours after he had said to be? What about if she doesn’t get on until tomorrow? “Will he even talk to me again?” She wondered.
Ivana didn’t know what to do so she sat and watched her friend. She got a bad feeling that he wasn’t taking this very well at all. “Why do I feel he’ll be gone forever?”
Her tears fell for her own pain now. As she continued to sit by Trina to make sure she was okay. Trina was something for her. She wasn’t really sure what Fred was so she couldn’t leave her friend. She decided to take the punishment whatever it might be.
Later after Trina was awake and felt better Ivana would go online to see if she could get him. Apologize to him and make him understand that she just couldn’t leave her friend.
Chapter 17
Fred had a hard time waiting until 2 to call her. He kept looking at his watch and saw the time was barely ticking by. Finally he could wait no longer and he tried her at 1 his time instead.
The connection rang and rang but she didn’t pick up. He was frustrated, but couldn’t be angry. “You are calling early anyway!” He reminded himself.
He waited until the right time and called her again. Fred got the same results this time. He kept trying for the next two hours straight. As the time passed with no answer he got more and more angry.
“What is this shit?” Fred felt his blood pressure go up. “Why isn’t she answering?”
Fred tried to relax, but he wasn’t used to people not listening to him. “You know what this is bullshit. If she’s going to go away so quickly, she wasn’t the right one.” He commented.
He could feel his mind starting to go into overdrive. He could feel his fight mode kick in, and then it was over. Fred shut off his feelings, or tried to anyway.
But no matter how much he tried, his heart began to ache. “She never loved me like I loved her.” He cried.
Fred had never cried in his life that he could remember. But he felt like his life had just been lost. He had really fallen for her over the internet? He realized that he loved her.
Now she had broken his heart into a million pieces. He had to recover and move on, but he didn’t know if he would be able to or not.
He wanted to hear her voice so badly. It was even worse these hours later. Sleep was avoiding him and he could do nothing but think of Ivana.
“So this is what it feels like to have a broken heart?” He sighed. Fred really couldn’t understand how she had wrapped her way around his heart so quickly.
He felt like he was dying inside. His mind wanted to shut down and he wanted to stop thinking all together. It had been years since he’d picked up a bottle of liquor. But tonight was a good reason to drink.
Opening the bottle he grabbed a glass, and then changed his mind. He put the bottle to his lips and tipped his head back. Fred tried to drink as much as he could before his mind could kick in and say stop.
Soon his mind was a haze of only sounds. He had thought the alcohol would numb his mind enough so he would stop thinking of Ivana. Instead he was tortured by the thoughts of her smile and he missed her so much.
He would go back and forth between being sad and being angry. How could she not answer me? Fred just didn’t get it. Then he would switch to thinking of how he had loved her but she didn’t love him. It was obvious now.
Tipping the bottle back up he took another healthy drink from his elixir. “You’re supposed to help me forget about her, not think about her anymore.” He complained to the bottle.
“Fuck this shit.” He said and opened another bottle. He was going to forget her one way or another.
Chapter 18
When Ivana finally got back to her room it was around 12 his time, almost 12 hours after he said he was going to call her. She noticed all the attempts that he had made. Ivana had that creeping feeling that he was so mad.
She wondered if she should call him. Wondering if it was better to just wait until the next day? Instead she finally decided to send him an email. She hoped he would read it and understand.
Fred,
I am so sorry I couldn’t come to the computer. Trina had just remembered what happened during her childhood. I don’t if you remember me telling you about her father and the whole story or not. I’m sure I did though. She didn’t want to sleep without someone sitting there watching her. I couldn’t let her remember those things two nights in a row. I really wanted to talk to you, but I was worried about her. If I would have left her and she had another nightmare, how would I feel? I hope you understand and you will still talk to me. I missed you.
Love,
Ivana
Looking at it she thought it was good. After all she was just telling him the truth of what had happened. She had felt pulled to try and call him in the night. But her fear for Trina was greater. She couldn’t turn her back on this little girl who she had grown up with. Ivana really did feel like Trina was her sister.
They might as well be they had both basically spent their whole lives together in the orphanage. Once you were in the orphanage that would be where you would stay until you turned 18. Or if you were lucky like Trina she got out at age 14. But that was only because Ivana had talked them into doing it.
‘It was such a hard life.’ Ivana sighed. So many nights she would lie in the orphanage wondering if there was a better place out there. She was tired of living this way, but what choice did she have?
The tears came to her face as she thought of all the pain while adjusting to the orphanage. To the fact that she would never see her parents alive again. It was tough to this day to think about it for her.
“Heaven you must be there!” She had cried out often. “I don’t want to live in this place.”
Ivana didn’t want Trina to suffer another long 4 years when she left. Plus the fact she would be all alone, no one to watch after her. The other kids had often tried to get Trina to hurt herself when she first got there.
They had known Trina was blind, but would lead her into walls and off of curbs. Any way they could make her hurt herself they would try. Ivana had threatened them all at that time. “I don’t care how bad you threaten me, if you keep hurting her I’ll tell on you.” She had puffed out her 8 year old chest in defiance.
There must have been something about the threat that rang true, they stopped picking on Trina. They also began giving Ivana a bit wider berth too. The two girls were often left to their own devices.
“Oh I hope he forgives me, if he’s mad.” Ivana prayed.
Chapter 19
Fred woke up feeling like death warmed over. His head ached like he had run into the wall about 50 times, if not more. “Why did I drink?” Fred moaned. He searched through his nights
tand. “Where is that aspirin at?” He threw stuff around the drawer.
“Oh there you are!” He grabbed the bottle and popped it open. Pouring four into his hand, he thought again and added another 2 to the pile.
Holding his head as he walked he got his water. ‘Down the hatch’, he thought and took the pills. He hoped they would work quickly. Fred went right back to bed, hoping sleep would carry him over to where the headache was under control.
For some reason he didn’t have high hopes this would happen. He lay down and let the wooziness he felt take over. Fred fell into a semi-sleep as he thought about Ivana. He still couldn’t believe she didn’t come online yesterday. Except for the time she had seen his message she had been offline.
Her profile had showed her last sign-on time. He shook his head, why did this have to happen? As he thought about her his heart broke more. Jason was right; you should never trust them when you meet them online.
“For fucks sake I’m not going to be able to sleep am I?” He wanted to yell it, but knew it would hurt his head far too much.
Going to the computer he figured he would check his emails, and send a quick one to Briana. “There is no way I’m going to the office today.” He said.
He didn’t want to check the site to see if she’d been online. But he felt the pull, he wanted to know. Was she just going to disappear? He felt the need to at least look at her picture. Opening his account, he saw he had one new message.
Even though he didn’t want too he hoped it was her. “What a sap?” His mind said to him.
He closed his eyes and opened the mail. Thinking please let it be her. He opened his eyes and saw her name on it. Fred felt his heart leap in joy. “As long as it isn’t a Dear John letter, but it just might be.” His mind laughed.
It wasn’t the first time he had to push something dumb out of his mind. Fred opened and read her message. “Oh my goodness, no I don’t blame you. You couldn’t leave her.” He said as he read her message.
“What kind of an asshole would I be if I was upset about that?” He said out loud. It was as if he was asking the computer and hoping to hear Ivana’s answer.
He picked up his phone. “Tommy they didn’t do that yesterday right?” He asked.
“No boss you said to wait for the go from you. I figured you changed your mind.” Tommy told him.
“Alright, how quickly can they respond?” Fred asked.
“With what we are paying, they’ll jump when I say go.” Tommy stated.
“Good be ready, I’m going to try and call her now.” Fred stated.
“I’m here boss.”
Fred hung up and tried to call Ivana. He hoped she was up and not too tired to talk. She answered on the fourth ring.
“Hello.” She said.
He saw her rubbing the sleep from her eyes. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to wake you up. I just got your mail and well wanted to call.” Fred said.
“No I would normally be up at this time. But I didn’t sleep all night because of Trina.” Ivana said.
“How is she doing by the way?” Fred asked.
“It will take some time but she will be okay, she’s strong.” Ivana answered after a minutes thought.
“Good, I’m glad to hear that. Hey give me one second to send a quick message to Tommy. He’s been waiting for an answer.” Fred said.
“Okay, I’ll wait.”
Chapter 20
Ivana heard the computer and rushed to answer it. She had finally fallen asleep from being exhausted. Trina was up now and she was sure it would be fine for her to sleep. As she had fallen asleep she hoped that Fred would forgive her.
“Can you hold on a minute?” He had asked. Saying something about Tommy, she wasn’t quite sure. Her mind was still cloudy from sleeping.
“Alright I’m sorry, I’m back.” Fred said as he came back in front of the computer.
Ivana looked at him and smiled. “I’m so happy you aren’t mad about yesterday.”
“I was mad at first. I thought you had just blown me off.” Fred admitted. “But when I read your email I understood. Really, I’d be a complete asshole if I would be mad!” Fred commented.
She shook her head in response. She wouldn’t say it, but she agreed with that statement. If he had been mad after reading her reasons, she would most likely never talk to him again. That would not be the type of man she wanted to be with in anyway. So why would she waste any longer with him?
“Hey can you go outside really quick? “ Fred asked.
“What right now when we are talking. I don’t have a way to take my computer with me.” Ivana stated.
“Yes please, just trust me okay.”
Ivana shook her head but did as he had asked. Walking outside she saw an airplane that was coming towards her apartment building. It was flying very low. She got nervous wondering if it was going to crash.
She saw a man jump from the plan and open a parachute. He landed fairly close to her; she was nervous and almost ran inside. He called out. “Wait I have this package for you. I’m supposed to tell you not to open it, but to go to the computer.”
Ivana took the small package; her heart began to beat quickly. “What could this be?” Fred had to set this up though; the man had said to go to the computer.
Ivana rushed inside. She looked at the screen.
“You have the package right?” Fred asked.
She shook her head yes. “Okay, please open it.”
Fred watched as she opened the package. He saw her face light up as she saw the ring. “Ivana Abramov, will you please marry me?” Fred asked.
Ivana looked up at the screen her face shocked. “Oh my goodness, yes I will!” Tears ran down her face, she was so happy.
Fred smiled as he watched her. “I wish I could have done it in person.” He told her.
“No this was so amazing!” Ivana stared down at the ring. She placed it on her finger and held it up for him to see.
“How does it fight?” He asked.
“It fits perfectly!” Ivana stated.
Chapter 21
“I’m sending my man Tommy to help you come. He’ll help you wrap up anything that you need done over there.” Fred explained.
“How many days, how am I supposed to be ready to go?” Ivana asked.
“Tommy will be there to help don’t worry. He’s the one guy I trust to take care of this. I would be there if I could. But I have a few too many things I need to do.” Fred stated.
“No it’s okay. I will see you once we are over there.” She answered.
Fred was glad, he didn’t know if this would be a problem. He knew it seemed a bit cold hearted to send someone else to help her. But he really did have a lot of things he had to take care of first.
When she got here he wanted to have the wedding right away. He wanted to make sure he had it all ready and she couldn’t change her mind!
There was also plenty of business things he needed to wrap up. Because once they had their wedding he planned on taking her wherever she wanted to go and spend a month just the two of them!
“Do you like the ring? I had to pick it by what I thought you might think was pretty.” Fred asked.
He saw her look down at the ring and study it. “It’s simply the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my life!” She cooed.
“When it’s compared to you the ring pales in comparison to your beauty.” Fred stated.
Fred watched as he ears turned the telltale red that singled her embarrassment. He thought it was adorable and couldn’t wait to see it in person.
“How soon will I be coming to see you?” Ivana finally asked.
He sighed. “Well when Tommy looked into it, he didn’t get a clear answer. Some sources stated it would take as little as two weeks or as many as three months.”
“What three months? That’s horrible.” Ivana answered.
“I’ll talk to you every day until we see each other in person. I won’t miss a single day. If you have to miss a day becaus
e of Trina I won’t get upset either.” Fred commented.
Ivana smiled. “You really are the sweetest man I think I could ever meet. I don’t know what my life would be like if you were out of it. I’m really glad that you didn’t just drop me. I was worried that after that day you wouldn’t talk to me ever again.”
“I had thought about it. I won’t lie to you Ivana; I almost did stop talking to you. But I’m so glad I didn’t!” Fred smiled.
They talked for a few more hours. Fred felt like he could stay awake for years. The energy and excitement was pulsing through his body.
Chapter 22
She looked at the ring he had sent to her. It was one of the most beautiful things she’d ever seen. He had known she loved dolphins. Along the sides of the diamond were two dolphin shapes in the ring. In the middle of their bodies there were several more diamonds.
“It’s beautiful. I love it.” She told him as they were getting ready to hang up. “I can’t wait to show Trina!”
“Go show her! Ivana I love you, I’m so happy you said yes.” Fred said.
Before she could answer he had hung up. Ivana sat staring at the computer screen. “Did he just say he loved me?” She asked herself.
For a minute she thought she had imagined it. She thought her mind was playing games with her. Ivana remembered the American story of Cinderella her mother had read her shortly before they were gone forever.
She had always wanted to be a princess. Ivana want to have a prince pick her up out of nowhere and save her by marrying her. Now it seemed like she might having that fairytale happen!
Running to the other room she had to share the news with Trina. She figured Trina would be happy. Getting out of this place would be great for both of them. With Fred’s money they would be able to live a life that neither of them could have.
