Tony met Mikhail at the nurse’s station and tried to calm him down before he saw Cara.
“It was that bitch. She did this,” Mikhail ground out bitterly.
“Who? Natasha?” Tony asked.
“Of course Natasha. She must have found out we were on her trail in Moscow. This is her way of stopping the questions,” Roman commented.
“Why? What did you find out?” Tony asked.
“Later. We need to see Cara,” Roman said much to his brother’s gratified surprise. It wasn’t often that Roman put other’s needs before his. And Mikhail was feeling too desperate at this time to think about Natasha or what they’d found out. Cara was his whole life; he wasn’t ready to lose her. Tony led them to her bed. There were so many things that were beeping and ticking; they assailed Mikhail’s mind with the seriousness of Cara’s injuries.
“What do the doctors say?” he asked Tony in a low raspy voice.
“They said they’ve done all they can and now it’s up to her whether she wakes up or not. I have not left her alone for even a moment Uncle. I’ve spoken to her and let her know that we need her back. I’ve made sure she knows we’re still here, still fighting for her. And it feels like she’s fighting too Uncle. I’m sure she’ll be glad to hear your voice.”
Mikhail nodded absently, staring at what he could see of his wife. There were just so many tubes and machines; it was very intimidating.
“Cara?” he whispered stepping forward to touch her hand. The others stayed behind the glass. Only one person at a time could be at her bedside.
“Cara? I’m here. Don’t leave me okay? I love you.” He whispered to her. Roman turned away from the pain on his brother’s face. He touched Tony on the shoulder indicating that they should walk and talk.
“What happened?” he asked as they paced the waiting room corridor.
Tony told him all he knew about the attack. How sudden and unexpected it had been. The breach in security that had caused the delay in entering the compound which had created the window of opportunity for the shooter.
“It points to someone with an eye for strategy,” Roman said thoughtfully.
“Would you say that that would describe this Natasha woman?” Tony asked.
Roman furrowed his brow trying to puzzle it out. “She’s known as an assassin for hire within the Krysha. She’s also known to have very few lines she won’t cross. She wants to take over as boss in Boston we learned, and she’s shown willingness to do whatever it takes. The only advantage we have is that she’s not the only player on the board and she’s in competition for the position against more established figures. If we can get them to take her out-”
“No,” Tony snapped.
“What?” Roman said in surprise.
“No. No more getting others to fight our battles for us. That’s what got us in this situation in the first place. This woman is willing to kill apparently to get what she wants. What about these other dudes. More established simply means they’ve been doing this longer. They’ll want their pound of flesh too. I think we should just let the police deal with her.”
Roman let out a laugh, but it didn’t sound amused.
“The police? You really think the police can help you?” Roman asked.
“I don’t see any other legal options here,” Tony said tiredly.
“And do you think these ‘legal options’ will keep your family safe?” Roman asked.
“I am willing to do whatever it takes to keep my family safe. But there are short term safety options and long term ones. And making any kind of deal with these criminals is simply asking for long term trouble,” Tony said.
“I agree,” Roman said. Tony stared at him, surprised that he would agree.
“You do?” he asked sharply.
“Yes. We need some long term options that would rid us of this problem. But first we need to deal with the short term threat. We don’t know if she will strike again or not.”
“Can we find these people?” Tony asked Roman.
Roman thought carefully. “Okay what we have to do is throw money at the problem. We have to put out a bounty on this killer – a price on her head.”
Tony pursed his lips, “That is actually not a bad idea.”
Roman gave him a sardonic look, “I should probably be insulted that you are surprised that I have good ideas…but I’m okay with being underestimated.”
“This bounty; is it for them dead, or alive?” he asked his father.
“I think we need them alive. We want answers after all don’t we?” Roman said.
“Yeah,” Tony said staring at his father with new eyes. He’d known his father was a major strategist but this was the first time they’d shared thoughts and ideas about plans to solve a family problem.
“Besides, if we say we want them dead or alive, how would we know that we got the right shooter?”
“Another good point,” Tony said studying his father in awe. “Have you done this before?” he asked him.
Roman looked at him, his eyebrows almost reaching his hairline. “I’ve been dealing with the Bratva for a long time. They took my family away from me. I’ve had a lot of time to think about how I might have done things different.”
“Of course. Right. Sorry,” Tony said.
“Don’t apologize. Give me a number for this reward money so I can get to work.”
“Papa, this is our family. Use the number you think will have the greatest effect.”
Roman clapped him on the shoulder. “I need to go set this up. Tell Mikhail I’ll be back later. You should go home to your wife and child.”
“Yes papa,” Tony replied.
Chapter 6
Tony and Solomon reached home at 5 that morning and found Sophie lying awake beside Benjy’s cot while Elijah dosed on the couch in the room. Katarina was next door with Sam, asleep on Solomon’s bed. Solomon came to put his arms around Sophie and hold her close and then he went off to his room to slide into bed next to Kat and Sam. Tony flopped on the floor next to Sophie and pulled her back to lean against him.
“Have you gotten any sleep?” he asked her.
“Aunt Cara was shot when she was in company with Benjy. What do you think?” she asked.
“I think that I’m here now and maybe you could close your eyes for a bit.”
“Was it her? That Natasha chick? Did she do this? Is Cara going to live?” Sophie asked.
“We’re not 100% sure it was her but we’ve put a bounty out for anyone with information to come forward. I don’t know about Aunt Cara. She’s still unresponsive but they’ve repaired what damage they could. It’s up to her now.”
“Will you pray with me?” Sophie asked him clasping his hand.
“Of course I will. You’ll have to do most of the praying though because I don’t know the words,” he said.
“It’s alright. Repeat after me; Our Father,” she began.
“Our Father,” Tony repeated.
“Who art in heaven,” Sophie said. Tony repeated it after her.
“Hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven,” she continued.
“Hallowed…er, I forgot,” Tony said tiredly.
“Don’t worry, I’ll finish,” Sophie said rubbing his hand soothingly.
“Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive – close your eyes Tony – as we forgive those who trespass against us.”
Tony realized that ‘close your eyes Tony’ wasn’t part of the prayer and hastened to comply hoping not to fall asleep even as he did it.
“Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever” she finished.
“Amen,” they both said.
“How did you know it was time to say ‘amen’?” Sophie asked Tony.
“I might not know the words, but I do know the prayer,” Tony said.
“You think someone’s listening?”
&nb
sp; “For you? Definitely.”
Sophie leaned her head against Tony and closed her eyes. Now that he was here she felt safe enough to sleep.

Roman used Mikhail’s contacts to send the word out. Three million dollars for anyone who could bring them the shooter, alive. Proof that the shooter was the genuine article would be required before the money was paid out. Independent contractors were encouraged to apply.
Two hours after the contract went out, Crowley called him.
“I wasn’t expecting to hear from you ever again,” Roman said into his phone.
“Really? You post a bounty for three million dollars and you don’t expect me to call?” he asked in amused surprise.
“You know what the money is for right? It might involve Kos’s so-called daughter,” Roman said.
“Her real name is Natalia Kalashnikov and she is truly Kos’ daughter. She is also a trained killer with a heart colder than her father’s. Are you sure you want to do this?”
“Mikhail’s wife was shot,” Roman said coldly.
“I heard. That was…unfortunate,” Crowley replied. Roman’s reply could most accurately be described as growling.
“You’re not going to get emotional about this are you Rom?” Crowley asked.
“Roman Petrov. Have we met?” Roman replied.
“I’ll call if I get some information,” Crowley said and hung up.
Roman hung up as well and took some deep breaths to calm down. Then he made his way to the hospital to keep his brother company.

Curtis drew up to the house; he was stopped by security 500m before the gate so they could check his identity and check that his car was clean. He hoped he’d run into Robbie at some point because he knew he was at work but he was chiefly here to see Sophie. The guards at the gate let him in and he drove up to the front door where another security guard – not Robbie – was waiting to pat him down again before letting him in the house. Katarina met him in the lobby and told him he would find Sophie in the den with the baby and Solomon. Curtis made his way there still keeping an eye out for Robbie.
He was standing guard just outside the door to the den and he turned at Curtis’ footsteps.
“Robbie. Good to see you. Are you well?” Curtis asked as he came up to him.
“I’m fine thank you for asking,” Robbie said with a small bow. “I appreciated the text by the way.”
“You did? That’s good. I was worried,” he said.
“Thanks. I’m fine. Mrs. Romanov is inside,” he said stepping aside.
“Okay then. I’ll see you later?” Curtis asked pausing as he passed Robbie.
“Yes,” Robbie said flushing slightly.
Curtis stepped into the den, closing the door behind him with one last look at Robbie.

They were sitting down to dinner when she called. It was Elijah’s phone that went off and he almost ignored it because he did not believe in interrupting dinner with phone calls but the number was unfamiliar and he thought it might be the hospital so he picked up.
“Hello. May I speak with Tony Romanov?” a female’s voice said.
“Er this is Elijah Devereaux; may I ask who is calling?” he said.
“Tell him Natasha,” the voice said. Elijah’s head snapped up and he met Tony’s eyes. He held out the phone to him.
“It’s her,” Elijah said.
Tony did not have to ask who ‘her’ was.
“Hello,” he said in an extremely cold and unfriendly tone.
“Tony. Nice to speak to you again. I have missed you. Did you change your mind yet?” she purred.
“No. But clearly you lost yours. Why did you shoot at my Aunt?” he demanded.
“Now now, is that any way to speak to your future mistress?” she asked flirtatiously.
“Is there a point to this crazy or shall I hang up? You’re holding up my dinner.”
“Okay then, to business. Cara was my way of putting my cards on the table. I told you I was serious about what I wanted. Now I suggest you give it to me or the next person doesn’t live to see the ICU,” Natasha said her voice turning nasty.
“So it was you?” Tony said.
“Ooh, look at that. Time’s up. You have three days. After that bodies start dropping again,” and she hung up.
Tony called to Robbie. “Did you trace the call?” he asked.
“She was on the phone for exactly 45 seconds; we needed her to hang on for 60. However we can confirm that the phone call was local. She’s in the area,” Robbie replied. “We’ll see if we can trace the number though it’s probably a burner phone.”
“She gave us three days before she hurts someone else,” Tony said.
“We’ll make it work sir,” Robbie replied and hurried from the room. Tony dialed his father and reported the phone call.
“Do we need to increase the bounty?” he asked
“Did she talk about the bounty? Has she heard?” Roman wanted to know.
“She did not mention it; but then again she was trying to stay on the phone only long enough to not be traced so it’s no confirmation that she doesn’t know.” Tony replied.
“Well at least we know it was definitely her. This is a start. A place to begin,” Roman said.
“Indeed,” Tony agreed looking around at the table. Everyone was listening to his side of the conversation. “Talk later papa,” he said.
“Okay,” Roman said and hung up.

Sophie and Tony went to bed directly after dinner. It had been a long week of worry and aggravation and they hadn’t been sleeping all that well. They’d moved Benjy’s cot to their room because they couldn’t stand to be separated from him; not after what had happened. It had been too close.
“I’m going to take a long hot shower and then I’m going to sleep for eight hours. Tomorrow I’ll know what to do about that bitch,” Tony said discarding his clothes every which way. Sophie was leaning over the cot watching her child sleep but she looked up at that. Every line of Tony’s face was strained.
“Want some company?” she asked.
Tony thought about it. “I wouldn’t say no,” he said with a shrug. Sophie discarded the robe she was wearing and the track suit underneath and then walked toward the bathroom in Tony’s wake. He switched on the shower, testing the temperature and then he stepped into the shower. Sophie came up behind him and plastered herself against his back, leaning her head against his broad shoulders and wrapping her arms round his waist. They stood like that for a while, just letting the hot water beat down on them washing off the day. Then Tony swung around and took hold of her waist pulling her flush against him and cradling her head in his hands.
“I’m scared Sophie,” he whispered.
“Me too,” she replied holding him closer.
“I just really wish there was a way this could be over like now,” he said stroking her hair and down her back to cup her ass cheeks.
“Yes. We’ll find a way though. We always do right?” she said caressing his back in turn.
“Yes we do.” He said and then leaned forward to kiss her. They explored each other’s mouths gently, taking and giving comfort. Sooner rather than later the comfort became something else; something more intense and desperate; rife with yearning and passion leashed. The hands on Sophie’s ass were holding on so tight they would leave bruises by morning. Tony pressed closer rubbing against her, his erection hard as iron against her thigh. He spun her around and bent her forward so she was bent over the shower faucets. She put her hands out to support herself as he thrust into her without further ado, pressing into her so hard she was afraid she’d hit her head on the walls of the shower. His thrusting was faster and faster, with very little finesse but a lot of desperation. She moaned quietly, letting him manipulate her body as he pleased. He leaned forward to cup her breasts and snapping into her with his hips harder and harder even as he used her breasts as anchors. This was not making love; it was s
eeking relief – Sophie was only too glad to give it to him. Tony had been too self-contained this week. She knew he had to be thinking about his own mother and brother who were killed by the Bratva to make his father comply with their wishes. There had to be a lot of déjà vu in his mind right now.
Tony groaned as his thrusts became faster and faster, body convulsing as his orgasm came upon him. Sophie was concentrating on making sure Tony got what he needed and so she was surprised when she began to judder and shake as her orgasm came upon her. Her inner muscles squeezed Tony’s penis and he cried out, releasing his seed into her in one long convulsion.
“Sophie,” he said her name like a supplicant and she turned around so she could hold him as the water mixed with the come running down her leg cleansing her. He held onto her tight, breathing hard.
“We should go to bed,” she whispered into his neck and he nodded his head in agreement. She stepped out of the shower switching off the water as she did so. She picked up her robe and wrapped herself into its warm folds and then took his robe and wrapped him in it. He stared into her eyes as she did it; letting her look after him.
“Come,” she said taking his hand and leading him to the bed. Benjy’s soft snoring was a soothing background for them to fall asleep to. Tony closed his eyes, letting the nearness of his family soothe him into soft slumber. Perhaps he could get a few hours of shut eye. Sophie wrapped her arms around him and stroked his arm listening to her husband and son sleep. Their gentle snoring was so soothing she was able to close her eyes and let her dreams take her at long last.

One of the guards shone the light of his torch into Elijah’s eyes as he was doing his rounds. He knew that the place was heavily guarded by professionals but he wasn’t comfortable letting other people ensure the safety of his family. So he did his own rounds before bed, to ensure that the guards were doing their jobs. So far he’d found them to be alert and aware, but old men needed little sleep so he’d decided to do a little watching of his own. When the guard saw who it was he simply nodded his head and continued on his rounds. Elijah fished out his phone and called Roman.
“Sir have you heard nothing yet?” he asked.
