  I don’t know why I’m writing all this, that was a lifetime ago, but there is no past, sometimes I dream of my first dog, just as I dream of my second, who was called FLEN and was held in high regard by Karel: Flen is a lord, Karel had said, but I don’t need to dream of him, because I recognize him again in all dogs, the way dogs express themselves poses no problem for me, I think I understand the language of all dogs, because I myself had dogs, I know why they yawn at certain times, and what it means when they raise their hackles, I understand them; nothing is past, not even the pain, even if the cause of it has been cancelled out by the passage of time, I still see the masks of pain as clearly as if they were displayed in glass cases, everything is there, and everything is as if I had just dreamt it;

  and now Beat comes in, addressing me as an author, he says, well, he says, have you finally successfully gotten through your rites of initiation, mon écrivain?

  PAUL NIZON was born in Bern in 1929. After a career as an art historian and critic, he turned to writing full time in 1962, and moved to Paris in 1977, where he still resides. His work has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Austrian State Prize for European Literature in 2011.
