His Touch

Now, facing each other, Jessica tried to concentrate on Brant himself. But that was difficult with him still inside her. She knew it would only take one unplanned move and he would harden instantly and go off like a rocket.

But they needed to talk. They had so much to decide.

“I love you,” he whispered, continuing to devour her with heated eyes.

  “And I love you.”

  “Marry me.”

  “Today?”

He chuckled. “Today’s not soon enough.”

“It’s the best we can do,” she responded in a sassy but breathless tone.

His features turned serious. “I’ve decided to stay, to try things your way.”

“Oh, Brant,” she whispered. “I don’t want you to do something you don’t, can’t do.”

“I want to be with you, my darling, and if joining the real world again is what it takes, then I’m willing to give it my best shot. Besides, there’s Elliot. I miss him, too.”

“Do you think he’ll mind about us, especially since your relationship is so new and fragile?”

“Are you kidding? He’ll be delighted. Like I’ve always said, he likes you better than me anyway.”

Jessica poked him in the ribs and felt him spring to life inside her. She caught her breath.

  He chuckled. “Better watch it.”

She felt her face grow hot, which escalated his chuckle into full laughter. “God, I love you. You’re the best thing that ever happened to me.”

  “I feel the same way.”

“I guess I should call Thurmon and make his day.”

“And I’ll make Ronnie’s at the same time.”

Brant leaned down and kissed a distended nipple, causing her to lose her next breath. “You’re not playing fair.”

  He grinned. “I know.”

  “How about Elliot?”

  “We’ll tell him together.”

“What do you think about him being your best man?”

He grinned. “Hey, that’s a great idea.”

His features sobered. “What about Roy? How’s he doing?”

“He’s responding to treatment. For now, that’s all I can hope for.”

Brant held her still closer, then said, “I’ll help you with your reelection campaign.”

Jessica pulled back and stared at him. “You will?”

“Don’t sound so surprised,” he said in a gruff but teasing tone. “You don’t have to beat me over the head with a bat. I’ve come to terms with how much your career means to you.”

She kissed him long and hard. “Thanks for saying that, my darling.”

“Although I know you’ll win, will you be devastated if you don’t?”

“Not at all. Now that I have you, my job is no longer the most important thing in my life.”

Brant stared at her for a long moment. “What if you’re pregnant? Have you thought about that?”

She didn’t know what she had expected him to say, but it wasn’t that. She made a strangled sound while trying to clear her throat. “What on earth made you ask that?”

“Because it’s not impossible, is it?”

“No, no, it isn’t,” she said, licking her lips.

He groaned, and that was when she felt him expand to full strength. “Would you mind having my child?”

“Oh, Brant, I never thought I’d want children, but I can’t think of anything I’d like more.”

“Thank God, because I feel like we’ve made a baby tonight.”

As though that thought was contagious, she whispered, “Me too.”

His eyes darkened. “I’ll never leave you again. Ever.”

“It wouldn’t work, anyway,” she said with a catch in her voice. “I’d just follow you.”

He laughed, then shifted over her and began loving her again.

  Forevermore.
