Pulse (Collide)

by Gail McHugh

He gently reached for her other thigh, repeating the process of bringing it up over his waist. He could feel her legs begin to shake in anticipation. Opened wide for him, he stared at her for a beat before lowering himself inside her. Hot, slick, and clenching around him with maddening fury, her pussy felt amazing. He contained his groan, basking in the sound of her soft gasp. A fleeting rush of fear shot through him as he slowly pushed deeper, but he kicked it back to where it belonged. Sinking his lips to hers, Gavin licked through her mouth, savoring the taste of her sugar coated sweetness. Cradling the back of her head with one hand, he cupped the gracious curve of her hip with the other. “Do you need me to tell you how badly I’ve craved you?” He groaned as he lapped, swirled, and laved his tongue against the delicate flesh of her neck. “I’ve needed you more than my next heart beat.”

Undulating currents of rapture coursed through Emily’s limbs as she writhed beneath him. His voice, the timbre of a man apologizing, rumbled low in her ear. His biceps clenched and flexed with each slow, calculated thrust. She was dissolving, thawing under his heat. Dragging her nails along his muscular back, her breath caught in her chest, lodged between his warm lips and seductive words. His desire for her was evident in every soft touch and stroke of his worshipping tongue. Back bowing, she bucked her hips faster, but Gavin completely stilled.

“Gavin, don’t stop,” she begged, her thighs clenching with vigor around his waist. “Please.”

“No,” he said in a strangled whisper. He stroked the dampened hair from her face and rolled his tongue over hers, talking between each heated breath. “I’m not fucking you tonight, Emily Cooper. Kill me if you want, but I’m going to slowly possess you until you can’t take it anymore. My fingers are going to trace every beautiful hidden line on your body. My lips are going to caress, nourish, and feed every unsated inch of you. Is that okay?”

  “Yes,” she moaned.

He claimed her mouth, swallowing each moan that followed as he pushed into the soft depths of her wet, luscious warmth over and over. He filled her with the purest, sweetest, most beautiful love she’d ever experienced. His slow, agonizing pulses and deep, passionate kisses trumped anything she’d ever felt, tasted, or known. Feeding her body what it needed, Gavin wiped her mind clear of ever thinking he didn’t want her.

  He tossed away every insecurity…

  Unraveled every doubt…

And carried her away in the eddying winds of his undeniable, unquestionable love…

Emily nervously bit her lip and swiped her fingers through a pregnancy magazine. Trying to ignore Dillon staring at her intently from across the doctor’s office, she crossed her legs and glanced at her watch. A quarter past four. Gavin was fifteen minutes late. Anxiously, she pulled her phone from her purse, hoping there was at least a message from him. Nothing. Not a text or a missed call. She tossed it onto her lap, wondering where he was.

“Kind of sick your loving boyfriend’s not here yet.” Dillon chuckled. “Wonder if he’ll be late during the delivery? Call me if you need a backup.”

Ignoring him, Emily turned the page and scanned an ad claiming beet juice helped prevent neural tube defects in a developing fetus. Mental note made, she flicked her eyes to her watch again. She was starting to worry. It wasn’t like Gavin not to call if he was running late. A jolt of fear shocked her system, but as soon as it did, Blondie from her previous appointment called Emily’s name. After placing the magazine down, Emily ran her fingers over her cell, sending Gavin a text. She shoved her phone into her purse, stood, and started for the door to the back offices. She noticed Dillon also rose to his feet, following right behind her. She whipped around, a chill running up her spine at his proximity. “What are you doing?”

He narrowed his eyes. “What does it look like I’m doing? I’m going to see if we’re having a boy or a girl.”

Emily blinked, cringing at his words. “You’re not going into the office with me until Gavin gets here.”

With a jeering smile, Dillon pulled a piece of paper from his back pocket. He handed it to Emily. “That’s a copy of the amended order of protection you took care of. Nothing in there says I have to wait until pretty boy gets here.” He swiped it from Emily. “Looks like you may have forgotten to add a little something to it.” He shoved it back into his pocket and held open the door. “Ladies first.”

Emily closed her eyes with regret. Head caught in a train wreck, she’d never thought about adding that particular stipulation to the order. Gavin had been on pins and needles for several weeks, and he must have been too stressed to notice her error. On a sigh and a prayer Gavin would be there soon, she followed the receptionist into an empty office.

Blondie’s displeasure with Emily was evident as she set up the necessary items for the visit. Once Emily and Gavin had found out the insurance billing error was her fault, Gavin called the office to vehemently voice his displeasure. After nearly getting his lawyers involved to file a lawsuit, Gavin wanted Emily to change offices, but since the doctor already knew their awkward situation, Emily felt it best to just leave it alone. She was more than satisfied that Blondie was reprimanded.

“You know the drill. Pants down below your pubic bone.” Blondie flipped on the sonogram machine, clicked off the lights, and moved toward the door. “Doctor Richards is finishing up with another patient. He’ll be right in. In the meantime, you can’t use the restroom.” With that, she and her attitude walked out.

Emily sat on the edge of the table with her back to Dillon. Hands shaking, she slightly lowered the soft, stretchy cotton covering her belly. She glanced at the door, willing Gavin to open it. In the quiet room, Dillon’s breathing sounded like a tornado whirling through her ears. Deciding to wait for either the doctor or Gavin, she stilled her movements.

“You let me fuck you for over a year. Now’s not the time to start getting embarrassed.” Emily heard the smile in Dillon’s words, felt the venom lacing them. “Don’t worry. There’s no way what you look like right now could ever turn me on.”

“You’re an asshole,” she mumbled, her heart pounding.

He chuckled. “And you’re the whore who landed us all in this position. What’s worse, Emily? A whore who fucks her boyfriend’s friend or an asshole who’s making her pay for it?”

As his sickening statement crushed through her head, the door swung open. Gavin and the doctor entered from the hall. Crossing the room rapidly, Gavin was at her side in a second, his face twisted in worry. “I’m sorry,” he whispered as Emily stood and wrapped her arms around his neck.

“What happened?” she asked. She breathed in his scent, automatically calmed by his presence. She looked into his eyes, trying to keep tears from her own. “I sent you a text. You never called back.”

“I left my phone at the office and didn’t realize it until I was halfway through the city. I got caught in traffic. It was a mess.” He looked at Emily’s face, picking up that she was worried about more than his absence. Something else was there. His stomach surged, twisting with anger. He flicked his eyes to Dillon, then back to Emily. “Is everything all right?”

Emily felt him freeze as though he’d suddenly been encased in ice. She swallowed, a knot swelling in her throat. She nodded, not wanting to tell him what’d happened. Gavin was already on edge. If he thought Dillon gave her even the tiniest of dirty looks, without a doubt, there would be bloodshed in that office.

“Nothing happened?” he asked more intently, staring between her and Dillon. From the chair across the room, Dillon peered at them.

She nodded again and reached up to kiss him. Gavin sighed as her lips met his. He tried to fight off the gnawing feeling she was hiding something. A heartbeat later, he helped her onto the table, his hand smoothing over her belly as she exposed her glorious flesh. She looked at him and smiled. Warming immediately, Gavin pulled up a chair and sat next to her. As he held Emily’s hand, Gavin’s eyes locked on Dillon. He was starting to think the idea of allowing him to be present was
something he’d regret forever. Fuck. This child could be his, and that asshole had no right to be here during something so joyous.

“So how’ve you been feeling, Miss Cooper?” the doctor asked, flipping through her chart. He placed the clipboard on his desk and moved toward the sink. “I see you’re still having some nausea?”

“I am. But it’s down to the evenings only now.”

“Try a hot cup of chamomile or ginger tea,” he said, washing his hands. After drying them, he padded across the room, slipped on a pair of gloves, and reached for the gel. “My wife swore on Saltine crackers when she was pregnant with all three of our boys.”

“Three boys?” Dillon leaned forward, his forearms on his knees. His mouth screwed into the faintest smirk. “I’m hoping we’re also having a boy.”

Tension from every direction dropped in the room like an atom bomb. Feeling Gavin’s hand tighten around hers, Emily whipped her head in his direction. He stared at Dillon with his mouth pressed into a rigid line, and her breath caught at the sight of Gavin’s eyes glowing like burning embers. Emily squeezed his hand, attempting to bring his attention back to her, but it didn’t work. Body bristling with noticeable rage, Gavin looked as though he was about to leap across the table.

  “I love you,” she whispered.

That broke his trance. Seething, Gavin dragged his eyes from Dillon’s and focused on the reason he was there. He could do this. He would do this. He only hoped to God he would survive without killing Dillon.

The doctor cleared his throat. “Well, you’re just shy of twenty weeks. If we get some cooperation from the little one, we’ll know the sex in a few minutes.”

Calming her, the unease of the moment faded as Gavin gently stroked her hair. Emily zoned out Dillon as she zoned in on the monitor. Praying the soft, humming heartbeat swirling through the air like a sweet melody half belonged to the man next to her, Emily pulled in a deep breath as the doctor pushed his handy microphone against her abdomen.

After a few blinking beats, the doctor chuckled. “Look at that.” He pointed to the screen as he pressed a tad harder along the right side of Emily’s stomach. “Not sure of the sex yet, but that’s the baby with its fingers in its mouth.”

Emily squinted, trying to make out the blob on the screen, and then it hit her. She could see exactly what he was talking about. Tiny, delicate fingers drifted in and out of a small mouth with the tide of the fluid it was floating in. Eyes watery, she turned to Gavin, his expression just as awed as she felt.

The doctor eased the microphone across Emily’s stomach. “And if it’ll just open those legs a little more, we’ll know if you’ll need pink or blue clothing.” A series of whooshes, a harder press of the instrument, and a warm smile on the doctor’s face later, he said, “Congratulations, Miss Cooper. You’re having a boy.”

Emily let out a choked gasp, tears falling down her cheeks as she smiled at Gavin. She watched him swallow, his eyes misting over as he stared at the screen. He’d played it off that as long as the baby was healthy, he didn’t care if it was a boy or a girl. Of course she knew he honestly meant that, but the day she walked into the almost bare nursery and noticed a signed Yankees mitt and ball set up on the dresser, she knew her Yankees lover’s heart wanted a little boy.

Gavin pulled his chair closer, his eyes landing on Emily’s. He brushed his hand over her hair and looked at the doctor. “A boy? You’re sure?”

“That little body part right there tells me yes.” Pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose, Dr. Richards pointed at the screen, his smile wide as he looked at Gavin. “They say not to do it, but considering I’ve seen thousands of those over the last thirty years, I’d say go out and buy some blue cigars in celebration.” The doctor cleared his throat and glanced at Dillon. Wearing a composed but taut smile, his tone held awkwardness as he spoke. “You go ahead and do the same.”

Dillon straightened his tie and stood. His bright brown eyes mimicked his fake smile. “I plan on doing so. My family’s going to be stoked it’s a boy.”

Gavin felt every fucking hair on the back of his neck stand on end. He rose from his chair, preparing to break every single bone in Dillon’s face, but Emily grabbed his arm and pulled him back to her side.

After wiping the gel from her stomach, Emily sat up and licked her lips that’d gone dry. “We’re finished, correct?” Her breath slipped from her mouth shakily despite her attempted poise. “I can use the restroom now?”

The doctor nodded, and with the aid of Gavin, Emily hopped off the table. Staring into his eyes, she lifted her hand to the back of his neck and pulled him down for a kiss. “I love you, Gavin Blake,” she whispered after a long moment. “Thank you for not doing what I know you could’ve so easily done. You continue to shock me. You also continue to make me fall further in love with you. My heart, soul, life, and body, you own it all.”

God. Never did Gavin imagine such simple words could make not turning into a lunatic worth every second. But those simple words weren’t spoken by a simple woman. They were thanks from his angel. Yeah, she had a way of making every struggle they’d endured worth it. He watched with adoration as she disappeared into the restroom.

Gavin swiped his hand through his hair. “Doc, while Emily’s cleaning up, I wanted to speak with you in private regarding a few things.”

“That’s not a problem.” The doctor shut down the sonogram machine and flipped on the lights. “We can talk in the hall.”

“No way, Blake.” With arrogance seeping through his pores, Dillon stepped forward, his eyes narrowed. “This baby is just as much my business as it is yours. No private bullshit.”

Crossing his arms, Gavin cupped his chin. He cocked his head to the side, a slow smirk lifting his mouth. “You’re correct, Dillon. My bad.” Bring it. He was about to blow Dillon’s fucking mind to pieces. Relaxing into a chair, Gavin’s smirk widened. “So, Doc, you see my girlfriend’s a total catch. The woman brings a whole new meaning to the word beautiful, right?”

The doctor cleared his throat, appearing somewhat confused. “Yes, Gavin, she’s a very good-looking woman.”

A reverent smile broke out across Gavin’s face as he brought his attention to Dillon, who looked equally confused. Eyes pinned on Dillon’s, Gavin lifted a single brow. “Yeah, she is. Well, given she and I started out with an extremely active, at least four times a day, wild sex life, I wanted to know if it should change now that she’s pregnant. My concern lies in hurting her or the baby.”

Gavin could see Dillon grit his teeth and wondered why the asshole was still in the room. Gavin figured his curiosity had him sticking around.

“Not at all,” the doctor answered, depositing himself onto a swivel stool. “Sex is completely healthy and encouraged for both partners. The baby is protected deep within the womb. There’s no chance of you hurting him.”

At this, Gavin watched Dillon’s face pale, yet the moron was essentially super-glued to the floor, his movements completely stilled. Gavin figured he’d take the grand opportunity to elaborate a little. Better yet, Gavin was about to reel him in…

“That’s great to hear,” Gavin continued, his eyes still locked on Dillon’s. “But I have to be honest, I’m hung like a pro. Emily’s said I’m the largest… man she’s ever experienced. We enjoy making love, but usually, we really go at it. We both like it quite… rough. We love every position that’s out there. We’ve even invented a few we’re pretty sure no one’s ever thought of. We’re good like that. So, doc, what’s your overall consensus on the facts I’ve provided? Basically what I’m asking is… can we fuck the way we’ve always fucked? Because if so, I’m taking my girlfriend home after this and giving her what she wants.”

Baited. Hook. Line. And. Motherfucking. Sinker.

As the doctor went to answer, Dillon went to exit the room. Gavin chuckled, proud he’d hit his target dead on. Said target was giving him the reaction he knew he’d get. “Wait, Dillon, don’t you want to hear the answer? I me
an, the baby is just as much your business as it is mine. Let’s not forget, no private bullshit.”

The doctor may have attempted to answer Gavin’s question, but Dillon didn’t. Nope. His answer was the thundering door slamming behind his arrogant ass. Another chuckle, a few unanswered questions, and Emily emerging from the restroom shortly after, had Gavin feeling the doctor’s appointment went better than expected.

By the time Emily and Gavin made their way back to his building and into the elevator, Emily was convinced her boyfriend had been possessed by a sex demon. Between the hungry looks during the drive home and his promises of exquisite pleasure to come, she believed he’d gone temporarily insane.

Leaning against the elevator wall, she indulged in his deep, passionate kiss as they rode up to his floor. Emily tilted her neck, allowing Gavin’s soft mouth to worship her flesh. “And who do I have to thank for this sudden change in sexual wanting? I’d like to send them a gift. Do you have an address?”

Gavin answered by closing his lips over Emily’s, caressing her tongue with needy little licks as his hands roamed her body. The elevator doors slid open, and with their arms wrapped around one another, Gavin walked her backward down the hall to his unit. Back pressed against his door, she let out a heated breath as he scrambled, fishing his keys from his pocket. His light stubble tickled her jaw as he opened the door. Walking her backward into the penthouse, his lips continued their assault on hers. Emily chucked her purse onto the sofa, circled her arms around Gavin’s neck, and giggled as he scooped her up. With her legs dangling over his forearm, she kissed him harder, her body throbbing from head to toe in anticipation.

“So are you going to answer me?” she breathed as he laid her on the massive California king, slipping off her heels. “Who do I owe thanks to?”
