Bitter Bonds

Haven’s hand covered his and Finn looked up into his friend’s brown eyes, warm with sympathy and kinship. Finn knew Haven understood exactly what he meant. He knew Haven’s story and it made him realize how lucky all three of them were to have found where and with whom they belonged.
“This is so great. It’s like the happy ending of a romantic comedy movie,” Micah said with a laugh.
Haven shook his head and Finn knew what his friend was thinking. He thought the same.
“No, it’s not. It’s not an ending. It’s the beginning.”
Finn had no sooner said the words than a warm hand descended on his shoulder. Jake’s touch sent heat shimmering through his body.
“Time to show this club who you belong to, boy.”
Jake’s voice held a note of possession that Finn loved. He stood up and faced his Dominant. Happiness shone from Jake’s handsome face and Finn decided the angels must have been watching over him the day he landed on the bar stool in front of Ray. He glanced over at the other Dominant. Ray gave him a salute and a big grin.
Oh yeah, Finn thought as Jake led him toward the main playroom of the club. The angels must have been working overtime for him because every bitter memory in his past had faded, replaced by the warmth of his bond with his Dominant.
Music filled his head as Jake cuffed him to a spanking bench. It soared as did his heart. He closed his eyes with a smile, waiting for the first smack from his lover’s hand. Finn had finally found where he belonged. Epilogue
“We did it.” Cristophe sighed with contentment and pride. “They’re so happy together.”
Rafael smiled at his brother. “We did and they are.”
They watched from their perch in the rafters at Darkness as Jake led his newly collared submissive to the spanking bench. Finn’s happiness shone from him like a beacon and the two angels could hear the music of his soul as loud and clear as if he carried a boom box with the volume on ten.
Cristophe swung his feet to the rhythm of the music. “That boy is such a beautiful soul.”
“I told you, one day, he’s going to make a magnificent angel.”
Rafael nodded his head to emphasize his words. White feathers floated around him, swirling down around Cristophe’s feet and on to the ground. Rafael frowned. He elbowed his brother and pointed to the feathers. Cristophe’s eyes widened in shock.
“Oh, no,” he whispered. “Is it Alex?”
Rafael closed his eyes and tried to discover whose soul lay in harm’s way this time. Once he realized whose despair caused their feathers to fall out his eyes opened and he stared at his brother, sadness creeping over him.
“No, not Alex. At least, not yet. He still has hope.” Rafael shook his head. “This man holds the promise of heaven within him, but he is lost. His journey to find his true home has wearied him and drained his hope. He no longer believes the place where he belongs is actually out there waiting for him.”
Tears slipped down Cristophe’s face. “I feel him now, brother. I’ve never seen anyone so lost before.”
A shudder went through Rafael and more feathers fell from his wings. “And things are about to get worse.”
Cristophe wrapped his arms around his brother and they clung together as violence wreaked havoc on the soul they watched over. Feathers rained down. Sobs escaped them. Finally, they drew apart as sirens rent the air in the distance.
“We’ll find a way to fix this, Rafe. I know we will,” Cristophe vowed.
Rafael hung his head, his gaze on the drifting white feathers. “I hope so.” He stared into the darkness, willing their new charge back to consciousness and doing the only other thing he could do while they waited for the ambulance. He spoke to the battered soul and whispered his name.
