I turned quickly and walked away as the first tear slipped down my cheek.
I made it all the way to the front steps and the much needed abundance of air before the hand closed around mine, dragging me to a standstill. I felt the touch as though I’d come into contact with livewire. The sharp zap of it sang up my arm and shattered in sparks through my body. I gasped and turned, already knowing who stood there.
Adam stared down at me, his expression thunderous. “It was you. I know it was you.”
My head was rocking side to side before I could stop it. “No.” I wrenched my hand free of his. “You’re wrong.”
“I’m not!” Anger blazed hot behind his eyes as they burned into me. “Look at me, Kia! Look me in the eye and tell me you’re not her.”
God help me, but I couldn’t. I was a coward. I was pathetic.
“Kia!” His snarl was quickly followed by the clamp of his hands around my arms. I was shaken.
In the distance, another voice shouted my name. I recognized it even before I spotted Nessie jogging down the hall towards us, my backpack in her hands.
I broke away from Adam, my determination nailed to the floor. It took every ounce of courage I possessed, plus some, to make myself meet his gaze. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said as evenly as was humanly possible. “Leave me alone, Adam.”
His eyes narrowed. A muscle flexed along his jaw. “That’s not going to happen. You can hide all you want, Kia. But I’ll find you.”
He meant it. There wasn’t a shred of doubt in my mind.
I shook my head. “If you care about Nessie, you won’t.”
With that, I walked away from him.
