Gerry turned white as a ghost. He glanced at Dan before turning and running out of the room.
Terry stopped laughing. “He . . . He . . . He isn’t going to look so perfect to you any more, Dan.”
Dan started to follow Gerry out of the room when a uniformed policeman opened the door. “Someone wanted to see me?”
Dan held the ring out for the policeman. “This is evidence that he is the La Jolly Cat Burglar,” Dan said pointing to Terry. “Please call detective Moor and Blaze. Give them this ring and tell them it’s the ring stolen from Dan Murphy’s home,” Dan said and pushed past the astonished policeman.
“Hey, wait. You can’t leave!”
Dan caught up with Gerry as he was walking out of the emergence room exit.
“Hold up!”
Gerry took a deep breath and stopped. He turned around.
The look on Gerry’s face made Dan hug Gerry instead of putting his hand on his shoulder. “What’s the matter?”
“I didn’t want you to know how bad I had it in prison. I didn’t want anyone to know. I hate having people pity me.”
“I’m not. I think it’s bad but it happens. A prison is like Vegas what goes on in prison stays in prison,” Dan said. “And you are never going to have to go back! So relax and come back inside and let’s nail the psychopath. Your two favorite detectives Moor and Blaze will be here soon, I suspect. And you certainly want to see the look on their faces when they find out that we solved the mystery of who the La Jolly Cat Burglar is.”
“You are right. I do want to see the look on their faces,” Gerry said as he leaned forward and kissed Dan on the forehead.
“That made me feel like a grandpa getting a kiss from his grandson,” Dan said.
“Yeah, well later grandpa is going to get booty, lots of booty.”
