Poodle

Page 22

by K. L. Savage

Melissa is crying. I feel her tears wet my shirt, and it’s because Ellie has never called her mom before. She finally has a family, and I know Holly would be happy for me, for us, and that our little girl is finally home.

“Ew, this is gross,” Tool shivers when Lady licks the puppy clean. He’s pure white with a damn afro on his head. We all laugh because the hair is bigger than the puppy. I had a feeling this would happen.

One by one, all ten puppies come out. Five white, five white and brown, but all of them have a pit bull body and a poodle head.

“Oh my god, they are so cute,” Melissa says.

  They are kinda cute.

Lady is panting, and Yeti alternates between giving her and the puppies kisses. He’s a good dad.

“Told you, Yeti was a catch. Isn’t that right, boy?” Tool scratches under his dog’s chin.

“If he’s anything like you, he’s anything but a catch,” I throw back at him, and we quietly start arguing about which dog is better, like we always do.

  It’s all in fun.

“Come on, let her rest. Let’s go to bed,” I say, gathering my girls up in each arm.

“Aw, do we have to?” Tool whines like my daughter would.

I give him a ‘really?’ expression, and he just shrugs, but he stays with Lady and Yeti.

I tuck Ellie into her bed and kiss her cheek. “I love you.”

“I love you too, Dad. Can you stay until I fall asleep?”

“Absolutely.” I lay next to her and hear her breathe, a comfort that I never knew I’d like so much, but now that she’s here, it’s the one action I’ll never take for granted.

I have my sunflower, the reason why my days are bright.

And my Ellie, the reason why my nights are no longer dark.

K.L. Savage is addicted to rough love, who decided they were tired of looking for the kind of books they wanted to read.

They had an itch that needed to be scratched, and as every girl knows, nothing scratches better than an alpha.

They write about gritty, alpha males, sometimes their dark sides, and the women they love.

If you have the same itch, their alpha males should fix that.
