“Breath through it, Jen” Bennie gently said as Jenny squeezed his hand tight. He made quick breathy sounds, “Whoooo-whoooo-heee… whoooo-hoooo-heee! C’mon, do it with me, Jenny.”
The two made the quick breathy sounds as the contraction continued, Whoooo-whoooo-heee… whoooo-whoooo-heee,” they repeated the breathing exercise before she finally settled back down to the table.
“Whew!” Jenny sighed, “That was a bad one.”
“Yeah, it was just over sixty seconds,” Trudy reported.
“Do you feel like getting up and walking around?” Beverly offered.
“Y-yeah, I think so.”
“It’s supposed to help with the circulation and the flow of blood. It might help speed you along,” Trudy agreed.
“I’ll try anything at this point.”
They helped Jenny to her feet after Beverly lowered her legs to the ground. She slowly stood upright as Bennie came around to her side. They helped Jenny take a few steps back and forth across the armory vault.
“My water hasn’t even broken yet. You think something is wrong?”
“No,” Trudy answered, “It’s alright, Jenny. The baby is fine. If it doesn’t break by the time you reach seven centimeters, I can grow a tool I’ve seen used to safely rupture the sack.”
“How do you know so much about childbirth, Trudy?” Bennie asked.
“I was a midwife in my country before I came to America.”
“Well, that’s fortunate,” Beverly chuckled.
“Ohhh, I feel another one comin’!”
“C’mon, let’s get you back to the table,” Bennie urged.
“It’s only been four minutes,” Trudy counted, “The contractions are getting closer together.”
“AHHH,” Jenny yelled, “And stronger!”
Bennie reached for the fiber cord he and Trudy connected to a wall outlet and plugged it into his socket, “I’m going to trickle charge,” he picked up a remote from a side table and began giving his chip a small gamma wave, “Maybe I can help take some of the discomfort away,”
“Discomfort is really an understatement, Ben… AHHHHH!”
She lifted up toward her knees with the next contraction.
“No, Jen!” Trudy begged, “Don’t push yet, you’re still not ready!”
Laying back down, her forehead continued to drip and her arms were beaded with more sweat, “How much longer is this gonna take!?” Jenny yelled before grabbing Bennie by the collar, “This is all YOUR fault, Bennie! I might never speak to you again!”
“What?” Bennie exclaimed.
“My having this baby is YOUR fault!”
“No, it’s your fault for sleeping with my clone!” Bennie protested.
Beverly reached out and took Jenny’s hand from Bennie, “Don’t listen to her, Ben. It’s just part of the process. I did it to Tucker when I was having you.”
Bennie sat back and absorbed the gamma waves flooding his chip, “I know, you didn’t mean anything by it, Jen.”
Jenny closed her eyes as she relaxed after the last contraction, “I’m sorry, Bennie… I love you so much… Don’t ever leave me… AHHHH OHHHHH, here comes another… AHHHH, one!”
Bennie shook his head, “What? A minute ago, you were blaming me for this whole thing? I don’t understand…”
Jenny cut Bennie off as another contraction began, “You miserable good for nothing man! OWWWWWWE, I don’t know what I EVER saw in you!”
Beverly chuckled at Bennie’s expression, “Like I said, Bennie, she’s not going to be rational about anything.”
Trudy examined Jenny once more after the contraction stopped, “She’s advancing pretty good now, Ben. She’s at six centimeters.”
“So, only four to go,” Jenny weakly said, “I love you, Bennie. I’m sorry I’m being such a bitch. You never deserved any of that.”
Bennie squeezed her hand tighter and smiled down on her with his softly glowing green eyes, “It’s okay, Jen. You’re gonna get through this.”
“Thank you for being by my side…. OHHHH, you miserable excuse for a man!! AHHHHH OW! OW! OW! I hate you!”
The birthing process continued well into the early morning hours. Trudy helped Jenny as everyone focused on the baby’s arrival.
